How Roblox Trading Works: Limiteds, Values and Scam Prevention Explained

Quick Summary

Roblox trading lets players swap Limited and Limited U avatar items directly, but it comes with real rules: an age check and Roblox Plus subscription to trade, a 30% fee and 50% cap on any Robux you add, and permanently final results. Here's exactly how it works, straight from Roblox's own Help Center, plus how to avoid the scams that target traders.

Roblox's trading system lets players swap Limited avatar items directly with each other instead of buying everything at a fixed catalog price, and it has its own eligibility rules, fees and scam risks that catch a lot of new traders off guard. Here's exactly how trading works on Roblox right now, straight from Roblox's own Help Center documentation, including who can trade, what it costs, and how to avoid losing items to a scam.

1. What You Can Actually Trade

Roblox's trade window only covers two kinds of catalog items: Limited items and Limited Unique (Limited U) items. Limited items are catalog pieces Roblox has stopped selling, so the only way to get one afterward is to trade or resell for it. Limited U items go a step further: each copy carries its own serial number, so a Limited U with a low serial is generally worth more than a high-numbered copy of the same item.

Regular, non-Limited catalog items — most ordinary clothing, free items and typical UGC accessories — cannot be put into a trade at all. To check whether a specific item qualifies, look at its item details page on Roblox; a Tradable field reading "Yes" confirms it's eligible. Robux itself can also be added to a trade alongside items, but only within strict limits covered below.

2. Who's Eligible to Trade

Before either side of a trade can send or accept an offer, Roblox requires both accounts to clear a short list of requirements:

  • Age check: every user involved — sending, accepting or countering an offer — must complete Roblox's account age check first.
  • Subscription: trading generally requires an active Roblox Plus subscription, or a legacy Roblox Premium subscription for players who already had one before Premium stopped taking new sign-ups.
  • Account settings: both Trading and inventory visibility have to be switched on under Account Settings > Privacy & content restrictions > Trading & inventory. If your inventory isn't visible, other players can't see what you have to offer.
  • Region: Roblox's Help Center currently lists trading as unavailable for users in South Korea.

There is one notable exception to the subscription rule: for a limited time, players in the United States can make up to two free trades per month without a Roblox Plus or Premium subscription. That free allowance resets at the start of each month, while Roblox Plus subscribers get unlimited trades. For the full rundown of what the subscription includes beyond trading, see our breakdown of Roblox Plus and its perks.

3. How a Trade Actually Works

Trades are built and managed inside Roblox's dedicated Trade feature rather than through chat or in-game dialogue. Once you open a trade with another player, you can each add Limited or Limited U items from your inventory, along with any Robux you want to include within the allowed limit, before sending the offer.

The other player then has three options: Accept the offer as-is, Decline it outright, or Counter it with a revised offer, which restarts the back-and-forth with a new "Make Offer" step. Every trade you're involved in — whether you sent it or received it — sits in one of four categories: Received, Sent, Completed or Closed, so you can track exactly where each negotiation stands.

Roblox also lets you set a Trade Quality Filter in the same Trading & inventory settings menu, with None, Low, Medium or High options. Raising the filter automatically hides offers Roblox judges to be lopsided or low-value, cutting down on spam offers, though Roblox is explicit that no filter setting catches every bad deal — it's a filtering tool, not a guarantee.

4. Adding Robux to a Trade: Fees and Limits

Robux can sweeten a trade, but Roblox caps how much you can add and takes a cut once the deal goes through. A 30% fee is deducted from any Robux included in a trade the moment the offer is accepted, and the amount of Robux you add cannot exceed 50% of the value of the items you're offering, calculated after that fee. Roblox's own example: if you're offering a 300 Robux item, you can add up to 150 Robux on top of it (after the fee is applied) — you can't stack an unlimited amount of currency onto a cheap item to try to outbid someone for a pricier piece.

This fee structure is one reason serious traders lean on item-for-item trades rather than Robux-heavy offers, and it also discourages using the trade system as a backdoor way to transfer large sums of Robux between accounts.

5. Why Trades Are Final — No Refunds, No Reversals

Once both sides accept, the trade completes immediately and permanently. Per Roblox's Help Center, trades cannot be reversed, refunded, or disputed for any reason, and Roblox will not return items or Robux lost in a trade you later regret. That finality is exactly what scammers count on, which is why double-checking an offer before accepting it — not after — is the only real safety net built into the system itself.

6. How to Avoid Trading Scams

Roblox's own Help Center describes several trading scams by pattern rather than by name, and all of them share one trait: they try to move the deal outside the official Trade and Sell features, where Roblox has no way to enforce or reverse anything. Patterns to watch for include:

  • Any deal made through chat, Discord, or a third-party site instead of Roblox's in-platform Trade window — Roblox explicitly states it cannot enforce deals made outside its official features.
  • Being asked to pay for an account, real-world cash, or a group using a trade or sale as the payment method.
  • Being asked to "lend" your account or an item to someone, even briefly.
  • "Trust trades," where one person is asked to send first and simply trust the other player to follow through.
  • Handing your account or an item to someone else so they can sell or trade it "on your behalf."

Roblox's official advice is blunt: use only the Trade feature for swapping Limited items and the Sell features for clothing, game passes and developer products, and treat every other method as unsafe. Roblox also offers a simple gut-check worth remembering — "if a trade feels like a bad idea, it probably is" — and recommends tightening your Trade Quality Filter to cut down on lopsided offers. If someone does try to scam you, Roblox's "Report Abuse" buttons, available throughout the site, are the official channel for reporting it.

7. How Roblox Plus Changed Trading

Trading eligibility shifted this year when Roblox launched its Roblox Plus subscription globally on April 30, 2026, at $4.99 a month. Plus took over the role Roblox Premium used to play for new subscribers, and Roblox Premium stopped accepting new sign-ups as part of that change; players who already had Premium keep it, including their existing trading access, but nobody can newly subscribe to Premium anymore.

Along with unlimited unrestricted trading, publishing and reselling of Limited items, Roblox Plus includes a discount of 10% on in-game items and avatar purchases, rising to 20% after three consecutive subscribed months, plus free private servers and free direct Robux transfers to other users. None of those extra perks apply to the free monthly trade allowance described earlier — that allowance only covers the two free trades themselves, not discounted purchases or the other subscriber benefits. If you want the full list of what a subscription unlocks beyond trading, including the private server changes that rolled out alongside it, our guide to the Roblox Plus private server changes covers that separately, and our explainer on how Robux works walks through buying, earning and cashing out currency more broadly.

8. Quick Recap

  • Only Limited and Limited U catalog items (plus limited amounts of Robux) can go into a trade — check the item's "Tradable" field to confirm.
  • Both traders need an age check, Trading and inventory visibility turned on, and an active Roblox Plus or legacy Premium subscription, except for a US-only allowance of two free trades a month.
  • Robux added to a trade is capped at 50% of your offered items' value after a 30% fee is taken out.
  • Every completed trade is final — Roblox will not reverse, refund or dispute one after the fact.
  • Keep every deal inside Roblox's official Trade and Sell features; anything that moves to chat, Discord or a third-party site is unprotected and a common scam setup.
