Quick Summary

Gears of War: E-Day launched October 6 on Xbox and PC to strong reviews and a franchise-record Steam player count. Here's the launch week recap: review scores, Game Pass numbers, and everything in The Coalition's October 14 post-launch update.

Ten days after its worldwide launch, Gears of War: E-Day is settling into its first real post-release stretch: review scores have landed, Steam and Xbox Game Pass numbers are starting to come into focus, and developer The Coalition has shipped its first substantial post-launch update. Here's everything confirmed so far about the prequel's launch week, its reception, and what changed in the October 14 patch.

1. Gears of War: E-Day Arrives on Xbox and PC

Gears of War: E-Day entered Early Access on October 1, 2026 for Premium Edition owners and qualifying Xbox Game Pass subscribers who bought the Premium Upgrade, with the full worldwide release following on October 6. The game is available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, and is playable through cloud streaming via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. The Standard Edition is priced at $69.99 and the Premium Edition at $99.99, and the title is a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

Notably, E-Day shipped as an Xbox console exclusive — it is not available on PlayStation 5, despite earlier unconfirmed reports that a PS5 build existed internally at Microsoft.

2. A Prequel Built Around Emergence Day

E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War, following a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic "Dom" Santiago in the city of Kalona on the day the Locust Horde first erupts from underground. John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro reprise their roles as Marcus and Dom. The Coalition's launch gameplay trailer, set to a Metallica track, leans into the human cost of the invasion rather than large-scale combat, following civilians as a subway station collapses during the first hours of the emergence.

3. What Critics Are Saying: Review Scores

Critic reception has been strong. On Metacritic, the Xbox Series X version sits around 87 from over 40 critic reviews, with the PC version slightly lower at 83 — figures that place E-Day as the fourth-highest-rated entry in the franchise, behind the original Gears of War (94) and Gears of War 2 (93). On OpenCritic, the game carries a Top Critic Average around 88 from roughly 70 reviews, with over 90% of critics recommending it. Reviewers have repeatedly pointed to it as the best-reviewed Gears entry in well over a decade.

4. Launch Numbers: Steam, Game Pass and Early Estimates

On Steam, E-Day set a new franchise concurrent-player record, peaking above 31,000 players on launch day — strong for the series, though not enough to crack Steam's own top-10 chart. Because the game launched day one into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, a large share of its early audience is playing through the subscription rather than buying outright, which is standard for first-party Xbox releases.

Third-party tracking estimates (not official Microsoft figures) have put early paid units in the low hundreds of thousands, alongside a much larger Game Pass player count in the low millions and a meaningful number of Premium Upgrade purchases. Microsoft has not published official sales or player-count figures for E-Day, so treat any specific unit-sales number you see elsewhere as an estimate rather than a confirmed figure.

5. The October 14 Update: What Changed

The Coalition's first major post-launch update arrived on October 14, following a day-one patch on October 5 that focused on stability, performance and campaign bug fixes, including scripted-sequence issues where turrets could trap players mid-cutscene. The October 14 update is lighter on new features and heavier on fixes, with most of the changes aimed at Horde and Versus rather than the campaign. Confirmed changes include:

  • A smaller, less intrusive diagnostic text overlay
  • A new option to mute collectible pickup chimes during the campaign
  • Memory and stability improvements across PC, Xbox consoles and handhelds
  • Fixes for account-linking issues and the in-game Social menu
  • Colorblind setting fixes

The patch notes also flag a known issue: some in-game rewards earned through campaign completion, such as character skins and titles, aren't being automatically re-granted yet for players affected by the bug — one to watch for in a future update.

That October 14 patch followed the day-one update's weapon balance pass, which reduced the Vulcan's damage, increased the Hammerburst's damage and lowered the Snub pistol's rate of fire, alongside quality-of-life additions like an FOV slider, improved HDR calibration and an uncapped PC frame-rate option.

6. Multiplayer, Horde and What's Next

Season 1 launched alongside the October 6 release, bringing The Coalition's full competitive and Horde offering online from day one rather than staggering it in later. The studio has detailed its post-launch multiplayer plans in the run-up to launch, and the official gameplay trailer below breaks down what's in the Versus and Horde modes at launch.

Given how much of the October 14 patch targeted Horde and Versus stability, expect The Coalition to keep iterating on multiplayer balance and server reliability through the rest of Season 1, likely alongside the bug-fix list for campaign reward regranting mentioned above.

7. Should You Play It on Game Pass or Buy It?

Because E-Day launched day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, subscribers already have access without an extra purchase — it's a similar day-one strategy to the one Microsoft used for Battlefield 6's Game Pass launch, and it's worth weighing against buying outright if you're mainly interested in the campaign and don't plan to stick around for Season 1's Horde and Versus content long-term. If you do want ownership, the $30 jump from Standard to Premium buys early access and cosmetic bonuses rather than extra content, so it's only worth it if getting in five days early matters to you.

It's also worth watching how the post-launch patch cadence holds up. E-Day isn't the only recent release that's had its day-one patch scrutinized — Control Resonant drew similar attention for its own launch patch and review scores — and with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 also launching this month, October 2026 has been a genuinely crowded stretch for Xbox owners deciding where to spend their time.

Quick Tips Recap

  • E-Day launched October 6, 2026 (Early Access October 1) on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam — it's an Xbox console exclusive, with no PS5 version.
  • It's a day-one Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass title, so subscribers can play without buying it separately.
  • Critic scores are strong: roughly 87 on Metacritic for Xbox Series X and an 88 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, the best-reviewed Gears game in years.
  • The October 14 update focused on Horde and Versus stability, account-linking fixes and quality-of-life tweaks rather than new content.
  • Treat any specific sales-number you see for E-Day as a third-party estimate — Microsoft hasn't published official figures.
