Quick Summary

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 as a standalone release that won't join Xbox Game Pass until Holiday 2027. Here's what Activision's official blog confirms about today's Campaign Early Access start, the October 20 DMZ Early Access window, and every pre-order bonus across all three editions.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, and Activision used its official blog on October 15 to spell out exactly what that launch looks like: a standalone release that will not be bundled into Xbox Game Pass until Holiday 2027, with Campaign Early Access opening today and DMZ Early Access following a few days later.

If you have been tracking Modern Warfare 4 since its May reveal, the broad strokes (three editions, a Vault Edition loaded with extra content, a 10% loyalty discount) have been public for months. What changed this week is the Game Pass confirmation and the countdown to Early Access. Here is everything Activision has confirmed, sourced straight from the Call of Duty blog and patch intel hub.

1. Modern Warfare 4 Launches October 23 As a Standalone Release

Activision's October 15 "COD Intel" post is direct about it: Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone release, and to play it at launch, players "must purchase it separately." It will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. That is a change from how recent Call of Duty titles have shipped, and it is the headline of this week's update.

Infinity Ward is developing the game, and Activision's own Call of Duty YouTube channel carries the confirmed reveal trailer below. The October 15 post reiterates that Modern Warfare 4 will not launch on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, and that pre-orders have been live on current-generation platforms since the game's reveal.

2. What "Standalone" Means: the Game Pass Timeline Explained

For Game Pass subscribers specifically, Activision's blog draws a clear line: "Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will continue to have access to legacy Call of Duty titles," naming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Modern Warfare 4 itself is excluded from that access at launch and will not be added to the service until Holiday 2027, more than a year after release.

In practical terms, anyone who wants to play Modern Warfare 4 on day one needs to own it outright, whether that means a digital pre-order, a PC pre-purchase, or a physical copy from a participating retailer. Game Pass will keep covering the back catalog, but not this entry, until that later window arrives.

3. Campaign Early Access Starts Today, October 16

For anyone who pre-ordered digitally, the first real benefit lands today. Activision's blog confirms Campaign Early Access "begins October 16," a full week ahead of the October 23 global launch. Players who locked in a digital pre-order should be able to start the Campaign now, subject to the standard caveats Activision attaches to early-access windows: actual start times can vary by platform and time zone, and service outages are possible.

The Campaign Early Access bonus applies to pre-orders and pre-purchases across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net and Steam, the same platforms where Modern Warfare 4 has been available to reserve since its reveal.

4. DMZ Early Access Begins October 20

Modern Warfare 4's extraction mode, DMZ, gets its own early window a few days after the Campaign: Activision lists DMZ Early Access as starting October 20, three days before full launch. The blog notes that "Campaign and DMZ Early Access start dates differ," so pre-order holders should expect to unlock the two modes on separate days rather than all at once.

Activision's Forward Operating Blog hub has also been publishing a multi-part DMZ Deep Dive covering the Hajin Exclusion Zone, including points of interest, enemy forces, vehicles and HUD intel, so pre-order players heading into DMZ Early Access on the 20th have official material to study beforehand rather than going in blind.

5. The Three Editions: Standard, Vault and Physical

Modern Warfare 4 ships in three editions, as Activision's pre-order guide lays out: a Digital Standard Edition available on every supported platform, a Digital Vault Edition also available everywhere, and a Physical Standard Edition for consoles only. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is coming at a later date, separate from the October 23 window for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Every pre-order or pre-purchase, regardless of edition, includes Early Access to the Open Beta that ran ahead of launch and the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, which unlocked instantly in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Call of Duty: Warzone for anyone who reserved a digital copy, in addition to arriving in Modern Warfare 4 itself at launch.

6. Vault Edition Contents and the 10% Loyalty Discount

The Digital Vault Edition is the premium tier, and Activision's official breakdown lists what it adds on top of the base game: the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack (Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix), the Special Forces Operator Pack (four additional Operators, each with a country-specific skin and local-language voice pack), the Signature Weapon Collection (five weapons with unique Blueprints and Apex Attachments), one season of BlackCell starting with Season 1, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus that Activision says more detail is still coming on.

Vault Edition buyers can also qualify for a 10% Loyalty Discount off MSRP, available at checkout on official platform storefronts. To qualify, Activision requires that a player has owned and played a premium Call of Duty title going back to Modern Warfare (2019) — including Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 or Black Ops 7 — or has accessed one of those titles through an active Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or PC subscription, or via PlayStation Plus Monthly Games. The discount only applies on the same platform and account used for that earlier title, and it is not available if a player upgrades later rather than pre-ordering the Vault Edition directly.

Players who pre-order the cheaper Digital Standard Edition are not locked out of the Vault Edition content forever: Activision confirms a Vault Edition Upgrade priced at $30 U.S. SRP, purchasable later from the same storefront as the original pre-order. The Loyalty Discount does not apply to that upgrade path, and physical pre-orders are not eligible for it at all since the Vault Edition is digital-only.

7. Every Pre-Order Bonus, Platform by Platform

Beyond the Open Beta access and Hunter Killer skin shared across all editions, Xbox players get an extra detail: every digital pre-order includes the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint, and Activision says Xbox Series X|S players specifically receive that Blueprint with an "OG Green" translucent finish celebrating 25 years of Xbox, while it carries standard mil-spec visuals on other platforms. Xbox pre-orders can be placed through the Xbox Store on console, the Xbox app on PC, or the Microsoft Store, and Xbox Play Anywhere means a single purchase covers both the console and PC versions.

On other platforms, PlayStation 5 pre-orders go through the PlayStation Store, and PC players can pre-purchase through Battle.net or Steam. A July update to Activision's pre-order guide also added a Serialized Camo as an additional pre-order bonus on top of the original benefits, so it's worth checking the official pre-order page for the full, current list on your specific platform before buying.

8. What's Next for Call of Duty

Modern Warfare 4 arrives while Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Call of Duty: Warzone are still active under their current season; Treyarch confirmed it is stepping back from Black Ops 7 as the franchise's focus shifts, a transition covered in our look at what Treyarch's exit means for the series going forward. Black Ops 7 and Warzone remain on Game Pass Ultimate under the legacy-access policy Activision reiterated this week, and both are currently running their Halloween-themed season, detailed in our breakdown of Season 06, The Haunting.
