Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — Release Date, Editions and Warzone Plans Explained
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026, ending Black Ops 7's run atop the franchise. Here's everything confirmed so far — release date, platforms, pricing, multiplayer changes, and how Warzone fits into the transition.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is officially coming on October 23, 2026, and it marks the end of the road for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which is currently in its final content season. Here is everything Activision and Infinity Ward have confirmed so far — release date, price, campaign setting, multiplayer changes, and what happens to Warzone once the switch happens.
1. Release Date and Platforms
Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and — for the first time in the franchise — Nintendo Switch 2. Activision has confirmed the game skips last-generation consoles entirely, meaning there is no PS4 or Xbox One version. Infinity Ward is the developer, continuing the studio's rotation with Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games.
Pre-order customers get campaign early access starting October 16, 2026, a week ahead of the full launch. The game carries an ESRB Mature 17+ rating, supports up to 60 players online, and on PS5 takes advantage of DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive trigger effects, with a PS5 Pro Enhanced mode also confirmed.
2. The Campaign: Korea, New York, Paris and the Return of Captain Price
The campaign is built around an escalating global conflict sparked by a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula. Confirmed mission settings include trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, high-speed chases through Paris, and SAS night raids in Mumbai. Players follow Private Park, a young South Korean soldier experiencing direct combat for the first time, alongside a returning Captain Price.
Infinity Ward describes the story as reaching "a decisive emotional climax" as the conflict escalates from trench warfare into city-wide assaults to reclaim occupied territory, with Price's return tying the new story back into the wider Modern Warfare timeline.
3. Multiplayer: No More Weapon Bloom, New Movement, 12 Launch Maps
Infinity Ward says Modern Warfare 4 removes weapon bloom entirely, meaning hip-fire accuracy no longer degrades at range — a deliberate shift toward what the studio calls "grounded, precise combat." New climbing and mantling mechanics are also confirmed, alongside a reworked prestige system.
At launch, multiplayer ships with 12 entirely new 6v6 maps, plus dedicated Gunfight and large-scale "Big War" modes that mix infantry and vehicle combat.
4. DMZ Returns, Zombies Sits This One Out
The extraction-based DMZ mode is confirmed to return for solo or squad play, built around Hajin, a large-scale exclusion zone set apart from the main multiplayer maps. However, Modern Warfare 4 will not ship with a Zombies mode — Infinity Ward is focusing its launch lineup on Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ only this year, leaving Zombies to rest for the first time in several entries.
5. The Beta: What Already Happened
Modern Warfare 4 already ran two beta windows ahead of launch. Pre-order customers got early access from August 21–25, 2026, followed by an open beta from August 28–September 1 that required no pre-order and also marked the game's first playable appearance on Nintendo Switch 2. Beta participants got an early look at the reworked movement system and several of the 12 launch maps before the full release.
6. Editions and Pre-order Bonuses
Activision's official support page lists two editions:
- Standard Edition — $69.99, available digitally or physically on consoles and for pre-purchase on PC.
- Vault Edition — $99.99, adding two Operator packs, a five-weapon Signature collection, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ deployment bonus. A $30 upgrade path exists for players who already own the Standard Edition.
Every pre-order includes early access to the beta (now concluded) and the Hunter Killer Operator skin, usable in Black Ops 7 and Warzone ahead of launch. Players who've owned a premium Call of Duty title since the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot, or who have an active Xbox Game Pass subscription, qualify for a 10% discount on the Vault Edition upgrade.
7. PC System Requirements
Activision has published official minimum and recommended specs:
- Minimum: Windows 10 64-bit, AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i5-8400, 12GB RAM, AMD Radeon RX 470 / NVIDIA GTX 970 or 1060 / Intel Arc A580, 70GB SSD storage.
- Recommended (60FPS): Windows 11 64-bit, AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-8700K, 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon RX 6700XT / NVIDIA RTX 3060 / Intel Arc B580, 70GB SSD storage.
TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a broadband connection are mandatory on PC — the game will not launch without them.
8. What's Happening to Black Ops 7 Before the Switch
Black Ops 7 is currently in Season 06: The Haunting, its last major content drop, running until Modern Warfare 4 arrives. The season added a Halloween event, a DOOM crossover bringing the Doom Slayer to the game as a premium Event Pass unlock, and new multiplayer and Zombies content. 9. How and When Warzone Moves to Modern Warfare 4
Warzone remains free-to-play and is expected to carry on as a standalone title, but it will shift onto the Modern Warfare 4 engine, with that game's weapons, operators, and progression taking over. Infinity Ward has confirmed a new Resurgence map set around a Korean industrial complex, and says a new large battle royale map is also in development, though a full reveal is still pending. If you want to see what Warzone looks like in the meantime, our piece on Warzone's new operator skin toggle ahead of the Modern Warfare 4 switch covers the first visible change players are already seeing in-game.
In the meantime, Black Ops 7's current multiplayer offering isn't going anywhere until launch day — see the full map and mode rotation for Season 06 if you're still playing it.
