EA Sports FC 27 Ultimate Team: Streamlined SBCs, Evolutions and Holographic Items Explained
EA Sports FC 27's Ultimate Team got a major overhaul: Streamlined SBCs now take individual items instead of full squads, Evolutions can branch into different Pathways, and Holographic items are in packs for the first time. Here's exactly what changed, straight from EA's official FUT Deep Dive.
EA Sports FC 27's Ultimate Team mode launched with its biggest structural shake-up in years: Squad Building Challenges no longer ask for a full squad, Evolutions can branch down different upgrade paths, and a brand-new class of historical cards called Hall of FUT is on the way. None of it replaces the FUT Gallery system from launch — it builds on top of it.
Here's exactly what changed in Ultimate Team's SBCs, Evolutions, Packs and live content for FC 27, straight from EA's own FUT Deep Dive, and what each change actually means for your Club.
1. Streamlined SBCs: Submit Items, Not Squads
The single biggest change to Squad Building Challenges is that most of them are no longer squads at all. EA calls the new format Streamlined SBCs: instead of building an 11-player squad around Chemistry, positions and a target squad rating, you submit individual eligible Club items toward a target score.
Each item's contribution to that score is based on its overall rating and rarity, using the same scoring system that powers the FUT Gallery. Duplicate submissions count, and partial progress is saved, so there's no need to assemble a full squad in one sitting before you can submit anything.
Streamlined SBCs are used for most Player and Upgrade SBCs going forward. Traditional, puzzle-style Challenge SBCs — the ones built around specific formation and Chemistry requirements — still exist, so the format isn't gone entirely; it's just no longer the default for routine squad-rating grinds.
2. Evolutions: Pathways and the Evolution Chain Preview
Evolutions — the system that lets you permanently upgrade a specific item by meeting play-based requirements — gained two new tools this year. The first is Pathways: some Evolutions now offer a branching choice partway through, rather than a single fixed set of upgrades. EA's example contrasts a dribbling-and-Technical path against a defensive-and-Jockey path for the same base item, so the same card can end up specialised in very different directions depending on which reward you pick.
The second addition is the Evolution Chain Preview, which lets you look ahead at a potential sequence of multiple linked Evolutions before committing an item to the first one. That matters because Evolution eligibility windows (OVR caps, PlayStyle+ limits, attribute ceilings) can lock an item out of a later Evolution in the chain if you upgrade it the wrong way early on.
EA also confirmed the PlayStyles Lab returns as a recurring program starting in Season 1, offering Evolution items that already come with some PlayStyles pre-applied, with requirements that vary in time or effort depending on the item.
3. Holographic Items: Regular and Pristine Versions
FC 27 introduces Holographic versions of eligible special items, which can appear in packs alongside the standard version of the same card. A Holographic item carries identical player attributes and in-match performance to its standard counterpart — the difference is purely cosmetic.
There are two tiers: Regular Holographic items get an animated foil treatment, while Pristine Holographic items add a stylised name font on top of that foil effect. Each eligible item has only one Holographic version available, so there's no stacking multiple holo tiers on the same card.
4. Pack Odds and Item Rarity Changes
EA also adjusted how item rarity is communicated and packed. Bronze, Silver and Gold base items no longer display a separate "Common" or "Rare" label — that distinction is gone from the base-item tiers. Packs also no longer advertise a guaranteed minimum number of Rare items.
According to EA, the underlying odds for base items rated 82 OVR and below are intended to stay consistent with FC 26, but individual items at the same OVR can now carry different pack odds from one another. If you want exact numbers for a specific FUT Store pack, EA added an in-game Pack Probability screen that shows the real odds before you buy.
5. The Campaign Hub and Single Player Live Events
Everything tied to a current promo — Objectives, SBCs, Evolutions, Gallery Sets and Live Events — is now centralised in a Campaign Hub, rather than scattered across separate menus. It's a navigation change more than a content change, but it's a welcome one if you've ever lost track of which SBC belonged to which promo.
The hub also surfaces Single Player Live Events: themed, AI-opponent matches built around a specific squad and rule set. EA's example event steps difficulty up stage by stage — Semi-Pro, then Professional, then World Class, then Legendary — though some events let you pick the difficulty yourself instead. Each event screen shows the AI opponent's build-up style, defensive approach and a breakdown of their strengths and weaknesses before kickoff, so you can scout before you play rather than finding out the hard way.
6. Item and Squad Upgrades: A Slower, More Deliberate Year
EA says it deliberately dialled back how fast top-end items get boosted across the FC 27 season. PlayStyle+ now caps at three per item instead of five, and attribute upgrades are reduced in scale across the year, which EA frames as keeping end-game items roughly 20% less inflated than they'd otherwise be by the season's end.
Campaign squads are also getting smaller: EA says to expect about five fewer Campaign weeks across the year, with individual Campaign squads shrinking in size where the theme allows, and tighter OVR and attribute ranges within each release. At launch, EA says items carry similar OVR and PlayStyle levels to FC 26, so the slowdown is about pacing across the season rather than a weaker starting point.
7. How This Fits With the FUT Gallery
All of this sits on top of the FUT Gallery system EA introduced at launch, where completed Sets and item scores build toward a Gallery Level and unlock Gallery Tokens. Those Tokens are spent on cosmetics and, eventually, on the new historical card class EA calls Hall of FUT — details on that are still to come. For a full rundown of Sets, Tags and the Gallery Hub itself, see our breakdown of how the FUT Gallery and Hall of FUT actually work.
Item management in Ultimate Team is only one side of FC 27's launch changes. The game's social hub, The Grounds and its Clubs features, got its own overhaul, and Career Mode picked up new ICONs and Manager Live tools worth knowing about if you split time between modes. If you're chasing a specific Evolution item from a current promo, it's also worth checking how the Future Stars promo's Academy Evolutions interact with the system described above — the Pathway and Chain Preview tools apply there too.
Quick Tips Recap
- Don't wait to build a full squad before touching a Streamlined SBC — submit eligible items as you get them, since partial progress saves.
- Check the Evolution Chain Preview before committing an item to the first Evolution in a chain; the path you pick can lock you out of a later one.
- Use the in-game Pack Probability screen if you want real odds for a specific FUT Store pack rather than relying on general OVR-tier assumptions.
- Expect smaller, more frequent Campaign squads this year rather than the huge blowout squads of past titles — EA trimmed both squad count and size on purpose.
