Quick Summary

Campaign Early Access for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 went live October 16 and DMZ Early Access opens October 20, ahead of the full October 23 launch. Here's what's playable now, who qualifies, and why Activision confirmed the game won't be on Xbox Game Pass until Holiday 2027.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, but for players who pre-ordered, part of the game is already unlocked. Campaign Early Access went live on October 16, and DMZ Early Access opens on October 20 — three days before everyone else gets in. There's a catch, though: Activision has confirmed Modern Warfare 4 is launching as a standalone release and will not be part of Xbox Game Pass until Holiday 2027, a sharp break from how recent Call of Duty titles have shipped.

Here's everything officially confirmed so far about the release window, what's playable right now, and what it means for Black Ops 7 and Warzone.

1. Modern Warfare 4 Release Date and Platforms

Modern Warfare 4, developed by Infinity Ward, launches October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net and the Xbox app), and Nintendo Switch 2. It's also an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning a single purchase covers both Xbox console and PC. The game is not coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One — this is a current-generation-only release.

The story is a direct follow-up to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023). After Task Force 141 lost a fan-favorite ally and Captain Price went rogue hunting Vladimir Makarov, the battle lines move to the Korean Peninsula, with the campaign also taking players to Paris, New York City and Mumbai as a new invasion threatens to destabilize the world.

2. Campaign Early Access Is Live Right Now

As of October 16, anyone who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo Switch 2 can play the entire campaign ahead of launch. Early access to the campaign remains available right up until the October 23 release date.

The campaign runs sixteen missions. Players step into the role of Private Park Hyun Jun, a conscripted South Korean soldier fighting a full-scale invasion alongside his squad — introduced in the trailer as Park, Jay, Cho and Moon, with American Marines West and Dunn embedded alongside them. Running in parallel is Captain Price's own hunt for "the one pulling the strings" behind the invasion.

Finishing campaign missions also unlocks a string of completion rewards that carry over into Multiplayer and DMZ at full launch, in this order: the "Cho" Base Operator, a "No More Rules" Calling Card, a Double XP Token, the "Dallas" Base Operator, a "Ready Line" Loading Screen, the "Luca" Base Operator, a "Gone Dark" Emblem, the "Oh-Ji" Base Operator, another Double XP Token, the "Kal" Base Operator, a Double Weapon XP Token, the "Dunn" Base Operator, another Double Weapon XP Token, and finally the "West" and "Park" Base Operators with a last Double XP Token.

If you haven't kept up with the story, Call of Duty's official "Story So Far" recap below covers the escalating events — from the invasion of Urzikstan to the formation of Task Force 141 and the fallout between Captain Price and General Shepherd — that set up Modern Warfare 4.

3. DMZ Early Access Starts October 20

The second early access window covers DMZ, Call of Duty's extraction shooter. Starting Tuesday, October 20, the same eligible pre-order and pre-purchase players get early access to all of DMZ ahead of the full launch.

DMZ is built around persistent progression and an open-world combat environment: players explore, fight AI forces and rival Operators, loot gear, craft equipment, complete objectives, and try to make it to an exfil point with their rewards. Between deployments, players manage everything from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) — a hub with Stations for recruiting and prestiging Operators, picking up Orders, managing a Stash and Loadout, testing weapons at the Firing Range, crafting through a 3D Printer, buying from a Vendor and Gunsmith, and tracking a PvP Hunters-and-Killers bounty board. DMZ progression runs up to Player Level 70.

4. Who's Eligible, and What You Get for Pre-Ordering

Both early access windows are tied to a digital pre-order or pre-purchase of the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition — a physical retail pre-order does not qualify. Digital pre-orders also come with the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, and the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint. Xbox console players specifically get an OG Green translucent treatment on that M4 blueprint, marking 25 years of Xbox.

Activision notes that actual play windows can shift with time zones and potential outages, and that platform availability for early access is subject to change, so treat October 16 and October 20 as the official start times rather than guaranteed exact hours for every region.

5. The Catch: No Game Pass at Launch

The headline change from recent Call of Duty releases is that Modern Warfare 4 is launching as a standalone release. To play on day one, players need to buy the game outright — it will not be included with Xbox Game Pass until Holiday 2027. Activision frames this as a temporary shift tied to focusing resources on the new title, rather than a permanent departure from Game Pass.

Game Pass Ultimate subscribers aren't shut out of Call of Duty entirely in the meantime: Activision confirmed that access to the back catalog — Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III — continues as before. It's only the newest entry that's carved out of the subscription at launch.

6. What Happens to Black Ops 7 and Warzone

Black Ops 7 and the current Warzone map aren't disappearing on October 23 — Modern Warfare 4 is launching as a separate standalone game alongside them, not replacing them outright. Activision hasn't given an official date for when Warzone itself transitions onto Modern Warfare 4's engine and content, so for now Black Ops 7's ongoing Season 06 content keeps running in parallel with early access. Warzone has already been laying groundwork for the switchover, including a new Operator skin toggle built specifically with Modern Warfare 4 in mind, while Black Ops 7 and Warzone are still receiving their own fixes, like the October 7 update's C4 nerf and AFK fixes, right up to launch week.
