Quick Summary

Call of Duty confirmed a new Operator Skin toggle arriving with Modern Warfare 4 Season 1, letting Warzone players filter other Operators down to MW4-only skins. Here's how the toggle works, what's carrying forward from Modern Warfare II through Black Ops 7, and when it all launches.

Call of Duty: Warzone is about to let you decide how "current" your battle royale lobbies look. On September 24, 2026, Call of Duty Staff confirmed on the official Call of Duty blog that a new Operator Skin toggle is coming with Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, giving players the option to visually filter out Operator Skins from older titles and see only Modern Warfare 4 Operators in their matches.

The change is part of a wider "Carry Forward" plan for the next chapter of Warzone, which keeps years of purchased content usable while giving Activision a way to make the game feel rooted in the newest release. Here is exactly what the toggle does, what still carries over from past seasons, and when it all goes live.

1. What the Operator Skin Toggle Actually Does

The Operator Skin toggle is a client-side display filter, not a content wipe. According to the official blog post, it was "built specifically for the Modern Warfare 4 chapter, giving players more control over the Operator Skins they see in Call of Duty: Warzone only." Flip it on, and the game visually swaps out anything that isn't a Modern Warfare 4 Operator for a generic Modern Warfare 4 Operator model in your own view.

How it behaves in a live match

  • Toggle ON: any Operator or Operator Skin from another Call of Duty title — the blog specifically cites Black Ops 6 as an example — equipped by another player is displayed as a Modern Warfare 4 Operator instead. This applies to enemies, party members, and squadmates, both in the pre-match lobby and during the game itself.
  • Your own Operator is never changed. If you personally equip a skin from an older title, you will keep seeing that exact character while you play, even with the filter switched on.
  • It's local only. The toggle changes what you see on your screen. It does not remove or hide anyone else's skin for them or for other players in the lobby.
  • Off by default. Activision confirmed the setting starts disabled, so nothing changes in how Warzone looks until you go into the options and turn it on yourself.

2. Why Activision Is Adding It Now

Warzone has spent the last several years layering Operators, weapons, and crossover content from title after title into one shared map rotation, which is exactly why matches currently mix soldiers, horror icons, and licensed crossover characters in the same lobby. The official post frames the toggle as a compromise: "We know some players enjoy that variety, while others would prefer Call of Duty: Warzone feel more aligned with the world of the latest release, including the upcoming Modern Warfare 4." Rather than removing legacy content outright, the toggle lets each player pick which version of Warzone they want to look at.

This lines up with a pattern the Black Ops 7 and Warzone Season 06 content update already showed: Activision keeps stacking new seasonal content on top of old inventory rather than resetting it, which is exactly the kind of visual clutter this toggle is designed to address.

3. What's Actually Carrying Forward Into Modern Warfare 4's Warzone

The bigger headline buried in the same announcement is what stays usable once Modern Warfare 4 launches. Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 will all remain available in Warzone starting with Season 1 — the collection players have built up over the past few years isn't being locked away.

The Legacy tab and the Gunsmith catch

Every weapon from Modern Warfare II through Black Ops 7 will still be accessible, but through a new Legacy tab in the Warzone Loadout menu rather than the normal Gunsmith flow. The trade-off: Gunsmith customization and existing Custom Loadouts won't carry over for legacy weapons or legacy blueprints. Instead, each legacy base weapon will get a fixed five-attachment version, and any blueprint you already own for a legacy weapon keeps its existing attachment setup. Activision was direct about the goal here: it wants the weapon meta in the new Warzone chapter to "feel distinctly rooted in Modern Warfare 4," while still letting players use guns they already know.

Raven Software will keep its biweekly weapon-balancing cadence going for the Modern Warfare 4 lineup, so expect the usual live-service tuning once Season 1 is underway.

The camo correction worth knowing about

Activision also issued a correction to its own post after publishing it: the original version stated that Weapon Camos from legacy titles would be available in Warzone. That was wrong. The corrected statement is that Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints carry over from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 — Weapon Camos from those legacy titles are not part of that carry-forward. It's a small but important distinction if you're planning around a specific camo grind.

4. See the Announcement Straight From Call of Duty

Activision posted the news directly from its official account, confirming the same details published on the blog:

5. When Does This Go Live?

The toggle and the wider Carry Forward changes arrive with Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, which lines up with Modern Warfare 4's own launch. Activision and Infinity Ward have listed October 23, 2026 as the release date for Modern Warfare 4 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, so that's the earliest point the new Warzone chapter — and the toggle — becomes available. Activision says there will be "more to share about our plans during the Modern Warfare 4 year in the coming weeks," so expect further detail on Season 1 content before launch.

If you're trying to figure out what else is changing before then, it's worth comparing this to how Activision handled the current season: the September 24 Warzone Season 06 update was a much smaller balance-and-bug-fix patch by comparison, not a structural change to how Operators are carried between titles.

6. What This Means for Your Warzone Loadouts

Practically speaking, here's what changes and what doesn't once Season 1 arrives:

  • Nothing you've purchased is being taken away — Operators, Operator Skins, and Blueprints from the last four titles keep working.
  • Gunsmith and saved Custom Loadouts stop applying to legacy weapons specifically; those guns move to the Legacy tab with fixed five-attachment builds.
  • Turning the toggle on only cleans up your own view of other players — it's a visual preference, not a server-side rule, so don't expect it to affect anyone else's game.
  • If your priority is weapon camos on older guns, don't assume they're carrying forward — Activision's correction confirmed Operators, Skins, and Blueprints carry over, but legacy Weapon Camos do not.

Quick Recap

  • A new Operator Skin toggle launches with Modern Warfare 4 Season 1, letting players display only MW4 Operators in Warzone matches.
  • It's off by default, only affects your own screen, and never changes your own equipped Operator.
  • Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 remain usable, but legacy weapons move to a new Legacy tab without Gunsmith support.
  • Weapon Camos from legacy titles are not carrying forward, per Activision's own correction.
  • Modern Warfare 4 — and this new Warzone chapter — is set for October 23, 2026.
