Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 — Prestige and Progression System Explained
Black Ops 7 brings back classic Prestige for the first time since Black Ops 4, plus individual Weapon Prestige ranks, three camo tiers, and progression that now carries across Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone. Here's exactly how ranks, Prestige, and camos work, straight from Activision and Treyarch's own documentation.
Reaching the level cap in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is only the start. Treyarch brought back the classic Prestige system for the first time since Black Ops 4, added individual Prestige ranks for every weapon, and made rank progress carry across Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone instead of resetting per mode. Here is exactly how ranks, Prestige, Weapon Prestige, and camos work, based on Activision's own support documentation and Treyarch's official progression blog.
Whether you just hit Level 55 for the first time or you're planning out your push toward Prestige Master, this breakdown covers every system you'll run into along the way.
1. How Ranks and Levels Work
Black Ops 7 uses a 55-level account rank, running from Private I at Level 1 up to Commander at Level 55. You earn rank XP from matches across Multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, and the Co-Op Campaign, and each level unlocks new weapons, equipment, Scorestreaks, Operators, and other items along the way. Once you hit Level 55, the level-up path doesn't stop — it opens into Prestige.
Progression Is Shared Across Every Mode
Unlike some earlier entries where modes tracked progress separately, Black Ops 7 ties account rank, weapon XP, and challenge progress together across Co-Op Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone. A level earned finishing a Campaign mission counts the same as one earned in a Warzone match. If you want the mechanics side of a specific mode, our breakdown of the Season 06 multiplayer maps and Ranked Play changes covers how rank and Ranked Play skill tiers interact.
2. The Prestige System: 10 Prestiges and Permanent Unlocks
Once you reach Level 55, you can choose to enter Prestige. Doing so resets your account rank back to Level 1 and relocks your Level Unlocks, but it does not touch everything you've earned — your Weapon Progression, Camos, and Reticles all stay unlocked. Black Ops 7 has 10 Prestige levels to climb through, each tied to its own icon and themed rewards.
- Entering a Prestige grants a Permanent Unlock — one per Prestige, for 10 total — which can be spent to permanently unlock any single level-locked item of your choice, so it never gets relocked again.
- Prestige rewards include Operator skins and weapon blueprints tied to each Prestige tier.
- Prestige progress is tracked across Co-Op Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone, so any mode you play contributes to the climb.
3. Prestige Master: The Push to Level 1,000
Finish all 10 Prestiges and you automatically graduate into Prestige Master. From there, the level cap extends far beyond 55 — all the way up to Level 1,000. Max Prestige also unlocks cosmetic flexes that aren't available earlier: at certain Prestige Master ranks you can customize your player title and its color, on top of the existing Prestige icon and reward track. If you're chasing Prestige Master, pairing it with a weapon you've already pushed through Weapon Prestige (below) is the fastest way to keep XP gains high while you grind.
4. Weapon Progression and Weapon Prestige
Every weapon in Black Ops 7 levels up independently, and that leveling happens across Co-Op Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone simultaneously — so a Zombies round and a Warzone match both chip away at the same gun's level. Treyarch brought back Weapon Prestige for the first time since Black Ops 4:
- Each weapon has two Weapon Prestige ranks, unlocked by leveling the weapon, that come with their own unique camos.
- Complete both Weapon Prestiges and the weapon becomes eligible to level all the way to Level 250, known as Weapon Prestige Master.
- At Weapon Prestige Master, every attachment the weapon can earn through Weapon Progression becomes permanently unlocked, so you stop having to re-grind attachments on that gun.
Treyarch has also said weapon leveling is faster in Black Ops 7 than it was in Black Ops 6, with XP gains rebalanced across kills, equipment use, perks, and Scorestreaks so no single playstyle is required to level up efficiently. For a look at what you'll actually be unlocking attachments and camos for this season, see our guide to every new weapon added in Season 6.
5. Camos: Military, Special, and Mastery
Camo progression in Black Ops 7 is split into three categories, and all three apply per weapon:
- Military Camos — 9 per weapon, unlocked in sequence by completing mode-specific challenges for each one.
- Special Camos — 3 per weapon, which can be unlocked in any order rather than a fixed sequence.
- Mastery Camos — 4 per weapon, per game mode, representing the top tier of that weapon's camo grind.
One notable change for this entry: according to Treyarch's progression Dev Talk, you no longer need to clear one specific capstone challenge to unlock a weapon's Mastery Camo. Instead, unlocking the 30 camos that come before it is enough to open the Mastery tier — a change meant to reduce how often a single frustrating challenge gates an entire camo grind.
6. Calling Cards and Challenges
Black Ops 7 ships with more than 680 Calling Cards to collect, earned by completing challenges spread across every game mode. Challenges are split between daily and weekly tasks, giving you a steady stream of smaller goals to chip away at alongside the main rank and weapon grind — useful if you'd rather work toward a specific card than just queue for XP.
7. Progression in Zombies and Warzone Specifically
Because rank, weapon level, and Prestige are shared systems, Round-Based Zombies and Warzone both feed directly into the same progression track as Multiplayer — there's no separate Zombies-only or Warzone-only rank to manage. That matters most in Zombies, where long survival runs and the Dark Aether storyline missions can bank a lot of weapon XP at once. For context on the current Zombies map and storyline, check out our guide to Season 6's Zombies content, Tenshu and Rogue Run. In Warzone, the same rank and Weapon Prestige systems apply, so loadouts you build and level in Multiplayer carry straight over into your Warzone drops.
8. Quick Tips for Climbing Faster
- Don't fear your first Prestige. Your Weapon Progression, Camos, and Reticles survive every Prestige reset — only your account rank unlocks relock.
- Spend Permanent Unlocks on items you'd otherwise have to re-earn repeatedly, since you only get one per Prestige (10 total before Prestige Master).
- Push a couple of weapons to Weapon Prestige Master early. Once a gun hits Level 250, its attachments stay permanently unlocked, saving you a re-grind later.
- Mix modes. Since Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone all feed the same rank and weapon XP pools, playing whichever mode you enjoy most won't put you behind.
- Chip away at Calling Card challenges between matches rather than saving them all for one session — daily and weekly challenges reset on their own schedule.
