NBA 2K27: NBA 2K HQ Companion App Explained
NBA 2K HQ is 2K's official mobile companion app for NBA 2K27, letting you build a MyPLAYER, manage your Crew and claim daily rewards from your phone. Here's what it does, what it takes to run, and how to get builds onto your console with a QR code.
NBA 2K27 moved a chunk of its MyPLAYER experience off the console and onto your phone this year. The NBA 2K HQ app lets you build a MyPLAYER, manage your Crew and claim login rewards wherever you are, then push everything straight to your PS5, Xbox or PC the moment you sit down to play. Here is exactly what the app does, what it takes to run it, and how it slots into the rest of NBA 2K27.
1. What Is NBA 2K HQ?
NBA 2K HQ is 2K's official companion app for NBA 2K27, built by Visual Concepts. It replaced the old MyNBA 2K companion app and launched on August 21, 2026 at 8:00 AM PT on the Apple App Store and Google Play, five days ahead of NBA 2K27's Early Access window. The app is built around four jobs: building and sharing MyPLAYERs, running your Crew's social side, scanning your face into the game, and handing out mobile-exclusive rewards.
Erick Boenisch, VP of NBA Development at Visual Concepts, summed up the pitch in 2K's launch announcement: "NBA 2K HQ gives the essentials our players need to stay connected no matter where their day takes them."
2. Downloading NBA 2K HQ: Requirements and Availability
NBA 2K HQ is free on both major mobile platforms, but it does have a minimum spec to clear:
- iOS: requires iOS 18 or later.
- Android: requires Android 11.0 or above (minimum API level 30).
- A persistent internet connection is required to use the app — there is no offline mode.
You do not need to own NBA 2K27 yet to install the app, and you do not need a console or PC nearby to use most of its tools. Everything you build or claim syncs to your 2K account and is waiting for you the next time you load the full game.
3. Building a MyPLAYER From Your Phone
The headline feature is a full copy of the NBA 2K27 MyPLAYER Builder inside the app. You get the same position, height, weight and wingspan options, the same attribute sliders, and the same badge eligibility feedback you'd see on console — nothing is a stripped-down mobile version. The app caps you at up to 15 builds at a time, which is plenty of room to theory-craft a few archetypes before committing VC to one on console.
Because the Builder runs the same badge math as the full game, this is also the easiest place to check how your attribute spread affects Badge Token costs before you spend real Virtual Currency — our breakdown of how Badge Tokens and the Synergy system actually work is worth reading alongside the app if you're still getting a feel for the new badge economy.
Uploading Builds With a QR Code
Once a build is finished, NBA 2K HQ generates a QR code tied to that specific MyPLAYER. Scan or tap it from your console or PC's camera-enabled prompt and the build loads straight into NBA 2K27 — no manual re-entry of every slider. It's also how you share a build with a friend: send them the code, they scan it on their own setup, and they're looking at your exact attribute spread and badge loadout.
4. Managing Your Crew On the Go
The app's Crews tab gives you full roster control away from the console: you can see every member's weekly and total Crew XP, check who's been active and when, and open real-time Crew chat without booting the game. If you've read our guide to The W and MyWNBA, the same Crew structure carries over in the now co-ed City that NBA 2K27 introduced this year — Crew management isn't locked to one side of the roster.
Messaging works like you'd expect from any modern chat app: timestamps, per-member avatars and threads organized by Members, Progression and Membership tabs, so you can coordinate a Rec or Crew HQ run before you've even left your couch for your phone.
5. Face Scan: Faster, Higher-Fidelity Scans
NBA 2K HQ also carries over Face Scan, now running faster with higher-fidelity texture output than the previous companion app. The in-app instructions are the same ones you'd get on console: remove hats and glasses, and secure your hair so it doesn't cover your face, before the app walks you through the capture. Doing this from your phone means you can redo a bad scan in better lighting without interrupting a console session.
6. Daily Rewards and Leaderboards
Opening the app itself is worth something: NBA 2K HQ hands out mobile-exclusive daily login rewards on a streak system, plus milestone rewards for repeated logins, and it tracks your standing on Daily Leaderboards and Crew Rewards so you can see where you sit without alt-tabbing out of a game session. None of this requires touching the Builder or Crews tabs — it's a reason to open the app even on a day you're not actively building anything.
7. How NBA 2K HQ Fits Into NBA 2K27
None of this is a separate game — it's the same MyPLAYER, Crew and account data that NBA 2K27 uses on console and PC. If you've already read our complete MyCAREER and MyPLAYER Builder guide, think of NBA 2K HQ as the portable version of that same Builder, plus the social layer that normally only exists inside The City. It's also a handy tool during a pre-order or Early Access window, since you can have two or three builds ready to go the moment your edition unlocks — see our rundown of NBA 2K27's editions, Early Access and crossplay if you're still deciding which version to buy.
The trade-off is that NBA 2K HQ is strictly a companion: it can't play a single possession for you, and builds still cost VC to actually unlock on console. What it saves you is time — fewer minutes spent fiddling with sliders in a loading screen, and more spent deciding who to invite to your next Crew run.
Quick Tips
- Update to iOS 18+ or Android 11.0+ (API level 30) before installing — older OS versions aren't supported.
- You can hold up to 15 builds in the app at once, so draft a couple of archetypes before spending VC on console.
- Scan a build's QR code with your console or PC to upload it instantly — no manual slider re-entry.
- Open the app daily even on days you're not playing: login streaks and milestone rewards are mobile-exclusive.
- Redo a bad Face Scan from your phone in better lighting instead of restarting the process on console.
