Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2: Release Date, Price, Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses Explained
Minecraft launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026, with pre-orders now open for three editions — Standard, Deluxe Collection and Ultimate Collection. Here's what each tier includes, how existing Switch owners can upgrade for free, and what the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack adds.
Minecraft is officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2, and pre-orders are open now ahead of its October 27, 2026 launch. Mojang confirmed the release in a post on Minecraft.net, alongside a free upgrade path for existing Switch owners, three purchase tiers, and a bundled Super Mario Mash-Up Pack for every edition. Here's exactly what's launching, what each edition includes, and how to claim the free upgrade if you already own the game.
1. Release Date and How Pre-Orders Work
Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 27, 2026. Pre-orders are live now through the Nintendo eShop for three digital editions — Standard, Deluxe Collection, and Ultimate Collection — and a physical cartridge version is also available to pre-order at retail. Nintendo's own listing confirms the October 27 release date and notes that pre-loading is available ahead of launch, so the game can be downloaded in advance and unlocked the moment the clock hits release day.
2. The Three Editions Explained
Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 is sold in three tiers, each stacking more bonus content on top of the base game:
- Standard Edition — the base game, digitally or on a physical cartridge.
- Deluxe Collection — adds the Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, and Plenty O'Blocks add-ons, 3 exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- Ultimate Collection — adds all three Deluxe add-ons plus Decocraft and Weapons + Tools, 5 exclusive Character Creator items, and 1,000 Minecoins. Nintendo lists the digital Ultimate Collection at $49.99.
Any Minecoins granted with a Switch 2 edition, or bought while playing on a Nintendo device, can only be spent inside Minecraft on the Nintendo ecosystem — they don't carry over to Xbox, PlayStation, or mobile wallets.
3. Every Edition Includes the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack
Regardless of which tier you buy, every version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 ships with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, upgraded to run with Vibrant Visuals — Minecraft's enhanced lighting and shadow rendering mode. According to Nintendo's own listing, the pack includes a full Mushroom Kingdom-themed world, 15 music tracks pulled from the Super Mario series, and 40 player skins covering Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and more of the cast. Mojang notes that Vibrant Visuals isn't available in every context: it's switched off during split-screen play and with some Marketplace content, so don't expect the enhanced lighting to follow you into every add-on you install.
4. Vibrant Visuals and the Other Switch 2-Specific Features
Beyond the Mario tie-in, Nintendo's listing spells out what the Switch 2 release actually upgrades over the original Switch version. Vibrant Visuals is described as a modern graphics pipeline that reworks sunrises, water reflections, and forest lighting for a noticeably different look than the base Bedrock renderer. The listing also confirms that worlds saved on the original Nintendo Switch version can be carried over to the Switch 2 release, so existing builds and survival worlds aren't left behind during the upgrade.
On the multiplayer side, the Switch 2 version supports split-screen local play, cross-platform play with a linked Microsoft Account, and both community servers and private Realms. A Realms Plus subscription allows private servers for up to 10 friends, and separately unlocks a rotating library of more than 150 Marketplace worlds, skin packs, and texture packs that refreshes monthly. The game runs in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes with touch-screen support, and online play requires both a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
5. Free and Discounted Upgrades for Existing Switch Owners
If you already own the digital version of the original Minecraft for Nintendo Switch, Mojang is offering a free upgrade path. You can pre-order the Standard Edition for Switch 2 at no extra cost, through the Nintendo eShop only, through January 31, 2027, in most territories. Two regions are excluded from the free offer: Japan, where the upgrade costs 100 JPY, and Taiwan, where it costs 30 NTD. Existing owners who want more than the Standard Edition can also pay a discounted rate to step up to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection rather than buying the full bundle at retail price.
This upgrade offer applies specifically to owners of the original Nintendo Switch release — it's tied to your eShop account, not your save data, so check the eShop listing on your own account to confirm eligibility before launch day.
6. What You Can Do Together on Switch 2
Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 runs on Bedrock Edition, which means the usual Bedrock cross-play rules apply: Switch 2 players can join worlds and Realms with anyone else on Bedrock Edition, whether they're on Xbox, PlayStation, Windows, mobile, or the original Switch. Nintendo's own product screenshots for the Ultimate Collection show off exactly that kind of mixed-skin, mixed-mob multiplayer session — farms stocked with animals, boats loaded with passengers, and underwater builds explored together.
7. How to Pre-Order
Pre-orders for all three digital editions, plus the physical cartridge, are open now through the Nintendo eShop and participating retailers. Existing Switch owners should pre-order through the eShop specifically to make sure the free or discounted upgrade is applied to their account rather than being charged the full Standard Edition price. Mojang hasn't published a Standard Edition price as of this writing; the only confirmed figure so far is the Ultimate Collection's $49.99 digital price on Nintendo's own store listing. Nintendo's product page also flags that ratings and final download size weren't locked in at the time pre-orders opened, so treat any size or rating figure you see elsewhere online as provisional until launch day.
The game has been playable on Nintendo hardware since the original Nintendo Switch Edition launched back in 2017, so this release isn't Minecraft's console debut — it's a ground-up technical upgrade built specifically to take advantage of Switch 2's extra power, paired with a fresh round of Marketplace content and the Mario crossover as a launch incentive.
