Minecraft Dungeons II: Release Date, Story, The Sift and Everything Explained
Minecraft Dungeons II launches September 29, 2026 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, day one on Game Pass. Here's everything officially confirmed: the story, the new Sift dimension, co-op, and pre-order bonuses.
Mojang and Double Eleven have locked in a launch date for Minecraft Dungeons II, the sequel to the 2020 dungeon-crawling spin-off, and it arrives sooner than a lot of players realize: September 29, 2026. With the base game's Wilderness Bound update only just settling in, Mojang is now turning its attention to a completely separate action-RPG adventure with new biomes, a new dimension, and four-player co-op chaos.
Here is everything officially confirmed so far about Minecraft Dungeons II — release date and platforms, the story setup, the new Sift dimension, gear and combat, co-op, and what you get for pre-ordering.
1. Release Date and Platforms
Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29, 2026. Mojang confirmed the date back in June, and it has been repeated consistently across every official channel since, including Xbox's own store listing.
Confirmed platforms are:
- PC (Steam and the Xbox app on Windows)
- Xbox Series X|S
- PlayStation 5
- Nintendo Switch
- Nintendo Switch 2
The game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so an Xbox purchase also unlocks the PC version, and it's confirmed for handheld-optimized play. Xbox's listing states plainly that you can "play day one with Game Pass" — the base game is included in the subscription from launch, though Deluxe Edition extras are sold separately from that.
On Steam, Minecraft Dungeons II is listed at $29.99 for the Standard Edition.
2. The Story: Something Is Wrong With the Overworld
Mojang's official setup for the sequel is intentionally mysterious. According to the date-announce post on Minecraft.net, "disorder is brewing in biomes across the land" — restless mobs, strange events, and rifts opening in places they shouldn't. The Overworld is described as facing "a threat unlike any other it has faced before," and it needs heroes to answer the call.
As in the original Minecraft Dungeons, you'll build a customized hero rather than play as a fixed protagonist, picking up weapons, armor, artifacts, talismans, and other gear as you go. Mojang hasn't named a singular villain yet the way the first game had the Arch-Illager, so the full plot is still under wraps ahead of launch.
3. The Sift: A Brand-New Dimension
The headline reveal from Mojang's August 20 gameplay trailer is the Sift, an entirely new dimension reached by stepping through the mysterious rifts teased since the game's announcement. Mojang describes it as "equally strange and beautiful," combining powerful new threats with landscapes built to stop players in their tracks.
The official gameplay trailer, uploaded to Mojang's own YouTube channel, shows the Sift for the first time alongside new enemy types and combat encounters:
Mojang frames the Sift around four pillars: using combat skills against new enemies, unleashing creativity with new gear, exploring uncharted lands, and teaming up with friends to take on the world. Screenshots so far show glowing spectral enemies and vividly lit encounter arenas that look distinct from the first game's more grounded dungeon aesthetic.
4. New Biomes and Environments
Beyond the Sift itself, promotional screenshots show a wider variety of Overworld-style biomes than the original game's mostly-underground dungeons. One shot shows a red mesa canyon hung with enormous blue ice formations, complete with a mountain goat perched on a natural stone bridge — a much more open, vertical style of level design than the corridors of the first Minecraft Dungeons.
Other screenshots show greener, village-adjacent areas with wooden bridges and farmland, suggesting the sequel mixes its otherworldly Sift sections with more familiar Overworld scenery.
5. Gear, Combat and Character Building
Combat stays in the same top-down, action-RPG mold as the original: melee weapons, ranged weapons, and equippable artifacts that function like special abilities on cooldowns. Official screenshots show sweeping area-of-effect spells, summoned allies, and crowd-control rings that snare groups of mobs — all signs of a more elaborate ability set than the first game's artifact system.
Mojang's messaging leans hard on gear variety: weapons, armor, artifacts, talismans, and "other legendary gear" are all confirmed drop types, continuing the loot-crawler structure that defined the first game rather than reinventing it wholesale.
6. Co-op: Solo, Online, or Couch Play
Minecraft Dungeons II supports up to four players total — you can go it alone, or team up with up to three friends in online or couch co-op. Mojang specifically calls out combining forces to take down "blue-charged" enemies as a moment where a full party pays off, hinting at enemies or mechanics built around group play.
Online console co-op and cross-platform multiplayer will require a platform-specific online subscription where applicable, per Mojang's own fine print — the same requirement as most console multiplayer games.
7. Editions and Pre-order Bonuses
Two editions are confirmed:
- Standard Edition — the base game, listed at $29.99 on Steam.
- Deluxe Edition — everything in Standard, plus a Soul cape, a Blub pet, four hero skins, and DLC 1 & 2 "available as released," according to Xbox's official store listing.
Pre-ordering either edition before launch gets you two hero skins, the Twisted cape, and the Twisted chicken pet. Mojang's fine print notes the pre-order bonus runs from June 6, 2026 through September 28, 2026 at 12pm PDT — the day before launch — while supplies last, limited to one per person or account.
There's also a separate crossover bonus: play both the original Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Dungeons II on the same Microsoft account (Game Pass play counts) to unlock a Hero Cape usable in Dungeons II and in Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition.
8. How It Fits Alongside the Rest of Minecraft
Minecraft Dungeons II is a separate purchase and a separate game engine from Minecraft itself — it doesn't touch the survival sandbox that just received the Wilderness Bound update, adding the Dappled Forest biome and Poplar trees to the core game. Think of it the same way the original Minecraft Dungeons related to base Minecraft: same universe and art style, completely different genre.
