Quick Summary

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026 as an origin story set fourteen years before the original trilogy. Here's who Bravo Squad is — Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes — and how their story during Emergence Day sets up everything that follows.

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it isn't the Gears 6 fans expected after Gears 5 — it's an origin story. Developed by The Coalition with People Can Fly, E-Day rewinds the saga fourteen years before the original Gears of War to drop players into the opening hours of Emergence Day, the moment the Locust Horde first tore up through the planet Sera. Here's who you're playing as, what Bravo Squad is, and how their story sets up everything that comes after.

1. What Is Gears of War: E-Day?

E-Day is a third-person cover-shooter built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 by The Coalition and People Can Fly, publishing through Xbox Game Studios. It releases October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), with Xbox Play Anywhere support and day-one inclusion in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium Edition and Premium Edition Upgrade owners get up to five days of early access starting October 1.

Unlike a numbered sequel, E-Day is a prequel campaign. It puts players in the boots of a younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic "Dom" Santiago during the first three days of the Locust invasion, well before the War Journal entries and radio chatter that long-time fans know from the original trilogy.

2. The Story: Surviving Emergence Day in Kalona

The campaign is set entirely in Kalona, an industrial city on Sera, over the span of three days as the Locust Horde erupts from underground and tears the city apart. E-Day leans into the horror of that first contact rather than the all-out war players remember from later games — buildings collapse, civilian evacuation efforts fail in real time, and entire COG units are wiped out before the fight has a name.

It's during this chaos that Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes are thrown together and formally organized into a four-person unit called Bravo Squad, under the command of Captain Akila Grey. The game's marketing has leaned on this framing deliberately: these aren't yet the hardened soldiers of the trilogy, they're survivors figuring out how to become a team while the world ends around them.

3. Marcus Fenix: Before He Was a Legend

Voiced once again by John DiMaggio, this version of Marcus Fenix is a Pendulum Wars veteran trying — and largely failing — to settle into civilian life when the Locust attack begins. E-Day's campaign is built around showing players a Marcus who hasn't yet become the stoic figurehead of the COG resistance: he's restless, still processing the end of one war, and about to be shoved straight into a worse one.

That framing matters for how the rest of the story lands. The bond between Marcus and Dom that defines the original trilogy isn't presented as already-established here — E-Day treats it as something that gets forged, not something that simply exists.

4. Dom Santiago: A Friendship Under Strain

Carlos Ferro returns as Dominic Santiago, and E-Day complicates his relationship with Marcus right out of the gate. Dom's older brother, Carlos Santiago, was killed shortly before the Pendulum Wars ended, and that loss has put real distance between Dom and Marcus going into Emergence Day. Rather than starting the story as inseparable best friends, the two have to rebuild trust in each other while the Locust invasion is actively killing everyone around them — which is also why Bravo Squad, and not just the two of them, is the emotional center of the campaign.

5. Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes: The Rest of Bravo Squad

Marcus and Dom aren't carrying E-Day alone. Mags Carter is a former COG soldier who, at the start of the game, is working at an Imulsion refinery rather than serving — until the Locust attack pulls her straight back into combat. Lucas Reyes is the squad's newest and least experienced member, an eager COG cadet who hasn't seen real combat before Emergence Day hits. Putting a veteran, a reluctant returnee, and a total rookie into the same unit is the game's way of showing Emergence Day from every level of experience at once, not just from Marcus and Dom's perspective.

6. The Chain of Command: Captain Grey, Colonel Trench and Beyond

Bravo Squad answers to Captain Akila Grey, their direct commander through the three-day campaign, with Colonel Trench overseeing the broader military response to the invasion. Other confirmed characters include Tai Kaliso and Gil Gettner — both familiar names to longtime Gears players from later entries — alongside Dr. Dalia Fabbri, who factors into the story's handling of the Locust threat itself. Seeing these characters at this earlier point in the timeline is one of the clearer signals that E-Day is meant to recontextualize, not just revisit, the original trilogy's opening chapters.

7. Why E-Day's Story Matters for the Series

E-Day isn't just fan service for returning players — it's a structural choice. By setting the campaign fourteen years before the original Gears of War and rebuilding the cast from scratch in Unreal Engine 5, The Coalition and People Can Fly get to establish exactly how Bravo Squad formed, how the Locust Horde's first assault actually unfolded on the ground, and how Marcus and Dom's friendship became the bond the trilogy is built on. None of that was shown in detail in the original games, which largely picked up the story years later, already mid-war.

That also explains why E-Day leans so hard into Kalona as a single, contained setting instead of jumping across Sera. Confining the entire three-day campaign to one city lets the story track Bravo Squad's formation in close detail, rather than spreading Emergence Day across a dozen disconnected fronts.

8. Quick Tips Recap

  • E-Day is a prequel, not a numbered sequel — it's set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, during Emergence Day itself.
  • Bravo Squad is four people: Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes, commanded by Captain Akila Grey.
  • Marcus and Dom are not yet close friends when the story begins — their bond is something the campaign builds, strained early on by the death of Dom's brother Carlos.
  • The entire campaign takes place over three days in the city of Kalona.
  • John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro reprise Marcus and Dom, with Colonel Trench, Tai Kaliso, Gil Gettner and Dr. Dalia Fabbri also confirmed in supporting roles.
  • E-Day launches October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, day one on Game Pass, with up to five days of early access for Premium Edition owners starting October 1.

For everything about pricing tiers and how early access actually works, the full rundown of E-Day's editions and pre-install windows covers it in detail.
