How to Play Together on Roblox: Friends, Party and Finding Games Explained

Quick Summary

Roblox's Party feature lets up to six friends group up and land in the same game together automatically, instead of coordinating outside the app. Here's how adding friends, starting a Party and using search and discovery work, plus how age-based chat rules and parental controls fit in.

Roblox is built around playing with other people, but the tools for finding friends, grouping up and landing in the same game together are spread across a few different menus. This guide walks through how friends work on Roblox, how the Party feature gets a group into one experience without anyone getting lost, and how the search and discovery page helps you pick something everyone will actually enjoy.

Everything below is based on Roblox Corporation's own announcements and app listings, so the steps match what you'll see in the current app on desktop, iOS and Android.

1. Adding Friends on Roblox

Friends are the foundation of almost every social feature on Roblox. Once two accounts are friends, they can see each other's online status, jump straight into a Party together and show up in each other's "Play with friends" recommendations on the home feed.

The Friends list is reached from the icon in the app's left-hand navigation bar. From there you can search for a specific username, review pending friend requests, and open any friend's profile to see what they're currently playing. Requests work both ways: a request has to be sent and accepted before two accounts are officially "friends," which is different from the one-way Followers system Roblox also offers for creators and larger accounts.

Followers can see your public activity and profile updates without you needing to approve anything, which makes Followers useful for creators building an audience. Friends, by contrast, unlock the features this guide focuses on — direct messages, join notifications, and the ability to be invited into a Party. If you only want to play with people you actually know, keeping your Friends list separate from a larger Followers count is the simplest way to keep invitations and Party notifications relevant.

2. What Party Is and How It Works

Party is Roblox's built-in tool for grouping up before you even pick a game. Roblox introduced it in December 2024 specifically to remove the old workaround of coordinating with friends outside the app just to land in the same server. A Party supports up to six people and works across desktop, iOS and Android.

Starting a Party

Open the Party tab near the Friends list, use the add button to pull in friends, and tap the Join icon to kick things off. From there the group picks an experience together and everyone is invited in.

Joining a Party

When someone starts a Party, invited friends get an in-app and push notification. If you miss it, the Party tab shows any active parties you've been invited to — tapping Join drops you straight in.

The point of Party is that members automatically load into the same server instance and spawn near each other, instead of everyone wandering a map trying to find the rest of the group. If someone disconnects, they can rejoin the same Party rather than starting over.

Chat Rules and Age Limits

Party text chat is available to users 13 and older. Younger accounts can still join a Party and play together, but their chat options are more limited, and Roblox has said parents can use parental controls to restrict Party access entirely or limit a child's account to one-on-one communication only. Text chat in Party launched first, with voice chat for Party following afterward in stages tied to Roblox's age-verification requirements rather than arriving for every account at once.

Party Across Experiences

A Party isn't locked to a single game. The whole group can move from one experience to another together, which is useful if the first pick doesn't land — everyone can back out and pick something else as a unit instead of re-inviting each other from scratch. Roblox has also said a Party API would let developers build their own touches on top of this, such as giving every member of a Party the same team-based look or access to shared in-game perks once they join an experience together.

3. Finding Games to Play Together

Once a Party is formed — or even before, if you're just picking something to play solo — Roblox's search and discovery page is the fastest way to find an experience. Typing into the search bar returns results sorted into Experiences and People tabs, and each experience card shows a thumbs-up like percentage and a live or recent player count so you can gauge how active it is before joining.

Every experience page also displays a maturity label — such as "Minimal" — set by the creator and used by Roblox's content filters. That label is worth checking before a mixed-age group jumps in together, since it determines what kind of content and chat behavior to expect.

4. Communication Settings and Family Safety

Because Party and in-experience chat both depend on account age and settings, it's worth understanding how Roblox verifies age and what chat tiers it unlocks — our breakdown of Roblox's facial age estimation and chat tiers covers how that system decides what a given account can see and send.

Parents and guardians who want more direct control over Party invites, friend requests and screen time can link a child's account and manage it from their own device. We've covered the full process, including spending limits and content sliders, in our guide to setting up Roblox's parental controls.

On the linked parent account, content settings go further than a single maturity slider. Parents can block specific experiences outright regardless of their listed rating, and separately toggle access to experiences carrying "sensitive issues" labels — Roblox's tag for content touching social, political or religious topics. Communication settings in the same panel control Experience Chat, Direct Chat and who a child's Party and friend invites can come from, so the same linked account effectively governs both who a child plays with and what they see once they're in.

A few practical notes worth knowing before you start a Party with a mixed-age group:

  • Party chat is restricted to accounts 13 and up; younger players can still join the Party and play, just without the same chat access.
  • Every experience sets its own maturity label, and that label — not just the player's age — shapes what content and interactions are allowed inside that specific game.
  • Parent-linked accounts can limit communication to specific people, or turn off Party and chat access entirely from the Communication settings panel.

5. Quick Tips Recap

  • Send and accept a friend request first — Party invites work between friends, not just followers.
  • Use the Party tab to start or join a group of up to six before picking a game, so everyone spawns together.
  • Check an experience's maturity label and like percentage on its page before the group jumps in.
  • Remember Party text chat needs an account to be 13+; parental controls can adjust this further for younger players.
  • If a Party member disconnects, they can rejoin the same Party instead of having to reform the whole group.
