Quick Summary

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026, and pre-installation just opened after the game officially went gold. Here's the confirmed release date, edition pricing, pre-install details, and a breakdown of the campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus multiplayer modes.

Gears of War: E-Day arrives on October 6, 2026, and the countdown just got a lot more real: pre-installation opened today, the game has officially gone gold, and Xbox has confirmed exactly what's in each edition. Here's everything that's actually been announced — release timing, editions, pre-install steps, and what the campaign, co-op, and multiplayer modes will look like at launch.

This is a prequel, not a remake. The Coalition is taking the series back to the day the Locust Horde first surfaced on Sera, putting players in the boots of a much younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago before either man became the hardened soldier fans met in 2006's original Gears of War.

1. Release Date and Platforms

Gears of War: E-Day launches worldwide on October 6, 2026. It's built in Unreal Engine 5 and will be available on:

  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PC, via Steam and the Xbox app (Play Anywhere)
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming

There's no PlayStation version — Xbox has confirmed E-Day as an Xbox console exclusive. The Standard Edition is included at no extra cost for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers starting on launch day, and the campaign supports 4K resolution at up to 60fps.

2. Why This Prequel Matters

The original Gears of War launched in 2006 and turned Marcus Fenix, the Lancer's chainsaw bayonet, and cover-based third-person shooting into one of Xbox's defining franchises. E-Day rewinds the clock to before any of that: Marcus is a soldier who hasn't yet earned his reputation, Dom hasn't yet lost the things that define him in later games, and the Locust Horde is an unknown threat rather than a familiar enemy. The Coalition — the Microsoft-owned studio that has led the series since Gears 5 in 2019 — has described the goal as delivering "unprecedented graphical fidelity" on Unreal Engine 5, rebuilding the series from the ground up rather than reusing older assets.

3. Pre-Install: What's Happening Today

The Coalition announced on Xbox Wire that E-Day has officially gone gold, and pre-installation opened on September 29 at 8am PT (15:00 UTC) across Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox PC app, and Steam. If you've pre-ordered or have Game Pass, you can start downloading now so the game is ready to play the moment your access window opens, rather than waiting on launch day with a slow connection and a queue of other downloaders.

If you're also tracking other big fall releases, our breakdown of GTA 6's confirmed platforms covers a similar pre-load situation heading into November.

4. Standard vs. Premium Edition: What's Included

Xbox has confirmed two editions at launch:

  • Standard Edition — $69.99. The full game, plus a pre-order bonus of the Exfil Dom character skin and the Exfil weapon skin set.
  • Premium Edition — $99.99. Everything in Standard, plus the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, 1,000 Iron (the game's in-game currency), five seasonal customization packs, and up to 5 days of early access starting October 1, 2026.

Game Pass Ultimate subscribers who want the Premium perks can pay a $30 upgrade fee on top of what Game Pass already includes, rather than paying full price for the Premium Edition separately. Online multiplayer on both editions requires an active Game Pass subscription that includes online play, sold separately from the base Game Pass tiers that don't cover it.

5. The Story: Emergence Day and Bravo Squad

E-Day is set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, on the day the Locust Horde erupted from underground and attacked the planet Sera without warning. The campaign follows a young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, alongside two new squadmates, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes — together they make up Bravo Squad, a Coalition of Ordered Governments unit caught in the opening hours of the invasion with no idea what they're facing.

The Coalition worked with People Can Fly on the story side of the project, and the official story trailer — shown at Gamescom 2026's Opening Night Live on August 25 — leans into the chaos and confusion of that first day rather than treating it as a victory lap for established heroes.

6. Campaign Co-Op: Playing With Friends

The campaign supports four-player online co-op, a first for a mainline Gears campaign, alongside traditional two-player split-screen co-op on consoles. That means a full squad can play through Bravo Squad's story together instead of splitting into the usual two-player pairs. If you're weighing up which co-op-heavy releases are worth your time this season, our look at Minecraft Dungeons II's co-op and gear systems is a good point of comparison for how differently two studios are approaching squad play this year.

7. Horde Siege: The New 12-Player Mode

Horde has been rebuilt into something much bigger. Horde Siege is a cooperative PvE mode for up to 12 players, split into three squads of four. Each squad tackles its own objectives across large city maps, earning Energy that's spent at cache stations to buy equipment and upgrades — before the separate squads eventually converge as the battle escalates.

At launch, players choose from four classes:

  • Assault
  • Breacher
  • Marksman
  • Medic

Each class has 30 levels of progression, unlocking new loadouts, armor mods, tactical gear mods, and weapon mods as you rank up — giving Horde Siege a much longer progression curve than past Horde modes.

8. Versus: The PvP Modes at Launch

On the competitive side, E-Day launches with four 4v4 Versus modes:

  • Team Deathmatch
  • Conquest
  • Demolition
  • Crucible

These sit alongside Horde Siege as the two pillars of E-Day's multiplayer, giving the game a straightforward PvP option for players who'd rather compete than survive waves of Locust. 9. Quick Tips Before Launch

  • Pre-install now if you can — it opened September 29 at 8am PT (15:00 UTC) on Xbox and PC.
  • Premium Edition owners can start playing up to 5 days early, on October 1.
  • Everyone else gets in on the global launch, October 6.
  • Check whether your Game Pass tier includes online multiplayer before launch day if you're planning to play Horde Siege or Versus with friends.
  • Decide up front whether you want the Premium Edition's cosmetics and Iron currency, since the $30 Game Pass Ultimate upgrade path is cheaper than buying it outright later.
  • If you're new to the series, know that E-Day is a prequel by design — you don't need to have played the earlier games to follow Bravo Squad's story.
