Quick Summary

Balatro's runs live or die on how you combine Chips, Mult and Jokers. This guide breaks down the scoring formula, Joker synergies, Tarot/Planet/Spectral cards, booster packs and Stakes so new players can build runs that actually survive the later Antes.

Balatro turns a standard deck of playing cards into a full roguelike run, and most of the confusion new players hit comes down to one thing: understanding how Chips, Mult and Jokers combine to produce a score. Once that clicks, the rest of the game — Blinds, Tarot cards, booster packs, Stakes — all falls into place around it. This guide breaks down every core system so you can build runs that actually survive Ante 8.

Balatro was created by solo developer LocalThunk and published by Playstack, launching on PC and Switch in February 2024 before expanding to PlayStation, Xbox and mobile. It has since become one of the most decorated indie games of the decade, and its scoring systems are deep enough that even hundreds of hours in, players are still discovering new Joker combinations.

1. The Core Loop: Hands, Discards and Blinds

Every run of Balatro is built from Antes, and every Ante contains three Blinds in sequence: the Small Blind, the Big Blind, and a Boss Blind with a unique negative modifier (no face cards, debuffed suits, forced discards, and so on). Clearing a Blind means reaching its required score before you run out of hands.

You start each round with a set number of hands (normally four) and discards (normally three or four). Playing a hand scores points toward the Blind's target and consumes one of your hands; discarding swaps up to five cards from your eight-card hand for new ones without scoring, which is how you dig for a better poker hand. Managing that hands-versus-discards economy — knowing when to gamble on a bigger hand versus banking a safe one — is the first skill every new player has to learn.

2. Chips x Mult: How Scoring Actually Works

Every poker hand you play has a base Chips value and a base Mult value tied to its hand type — a Pair starts weaker than a Full House, which starts weaker than a Straight Flush. Each scoring card adds its own Chip value on top (number cards add their rank, face cards add 10, Aces add 11), and then the whole Chip total is multiplied by the Mult to produce your final score for that hand: Score = Chips × Mult.

Two systems let you push that formula far beyond its base numbers. First, every hand type you play permanently levels up via Planet cards, raising its base Chips and Mult for the rest of the run (and into future runs, if the level is unlocked). Second, Jokers attach additional Chips, additive Mult, or multiplicative X Mult on top of whatever the hand already produced — and X Mult is what turns a few hundred points into the millions a late-Ante Boss Blind demands.

3. Jokers: The Heart of Every Run

Jokers are the passive cards that sit above your hand and apply their effects automatically every time you play (or sometimes discard). There are over 150 of them, and they range from simple ("+30 Chips if the hand contains a Pair") to build-defining ("this Joker's Mult grows permanently every time you discard a specific card"). You hold a limited number of Joker slots at once, so deciding which Jokers to keep, sell, or skip is the main strategic decision in every shop visit.

The strongest runs come from finding Jokers that synergize — for example, combining a Joker that retriggers scoring cards with one that adds Mult per retrigger, or building an entire deck around a single hand type (like Flushes or Pairs) and stacking every Joker that rewards it. Because the Joker pool is randomized from the shop each run, no two games play out the same way.

4. Tarot, Planet and Spectral Cards

Alongside Jokers, Balatro has three families of Consumable cards that you use once for an immediate effect rather than keeping passively:

  • Tarot cards mostly modify your playing cards directly — turning a card into a Glass Card, Gold Card, or changing its suit — or manipulate your money and deck.
  • Planet cards permanently level up a specific poker hand type's base Chips and Mult, which is how you make weaker hands (like a simple Pair) scale into the late game.
  • Spectral cards are rarer and more powerful, capable of things like duplicating a Joker, adding negative (free) Joker slots, or transforming your entire deck.

You find and buy these from the shop between Blinds, and strong runs usually mix passive Joker scaling with a handful of well-timed Tarot or Spectral plays.

5. Booster Packs and the Shop Economy

Between Blinds you visit a shop that sells Jokers, Consumables, vouchers, and booster packs — sealed packs (Standard, Arcana, Celestial, Spectral, and Buffoon) that let you pick one or more cards from a small selection. Arcana Packs offer Tarot cards, Celestial Packs offer Planet cards, and Buffoon Packs offer Jokers directly; Jumbo and Mega versions show more options or let you keep more than one. Managing your money — earned mostly from interest on unspent cash and end-of-round bonuses — to buy the right packs and vouchers at the right time is as important as the hands you actually play.

6. Stakes, Seeds and Replayability

Once you clear a run on the default White Stake, Balatro unlocks progressively harder Stakes (Red, Green, Black, Blue, Purple, Orange and Gold) that layer on permanent handicaps — smaller starting hands, higher Blind requirements, fewer discards — while also unlocking cosmetic card backs and, on the hardest Stakes, higher Joker level caps. Combined with randomized seeds, different decks with unique starting perks, and daily/weekly challenge runs, this is what gives Balatro its long-term replay value well beyond a first clear.

7. Quick Tips for New and Returning Players

  • Prioritize X Mult Jokers over flat Chips or +Mult Jokers once you're past the first couple of Antes — multiplicative scaling compounds much faster.
  • Don't ignore Planet cards. Leveling up a common hand type like Pair or Two Pair pays off every single round for the rest of the run.
  • Read Boss Blind modifiers carefully before you plan your hand — some disable specific suits or card types entirely, which can wreck a one-note build.
  • Selling a Joker you no longer need is often correct; hoarding dead weight in your limited slots costs you more than the sale price is worth.
  • If a run isn't working, it's fine to restart. Balatro's seeds are effectively infinite, and recognizing a bad opening is a core skill.

8. Where to Play Balatro

Balatro is available on PC via Steam, on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and on mobile through the Apple App Store, Apple Arcade (as Balatro+) and Google Play. The core rules and scoring are identical across every platform, so a Joker combo you find on mobile works exactly the same on Steam.
