EA Sports FC 27: The Grounds Explained — Clubs, Archetypes, Amps and Kickabouts
The Grounds is EA Sports FC 27's new street-football hub, connecting three districts, eight Kickabout mini-games and a full Archetype and Amps progression system to the rest of Clubs. Here's how the Terrace, Archetypes, Masteries and Kickabouts all fit together.
1. What Is The Grounds in EA Sports FC 27?
The Grounds is EA Sports FC 27's new social hub, a street-football playground that EA describes as bringing "up to 100 players together in a shared football playground." Instead of loading straight into a stadium, players spawn into an open, walkable space built around a central plaza and a mix of pitches, courts and mini-game venues. It sits alongside Clubs, so the friends you already play 11v11 with can also meet up here for quick 1v1s, obstacle races or hoop-shooting games between matches.
EA has positioned The Grounds as the biggest new addition in FC 27, evolving through seasonal campaigns and live updates rather than shipping as a one-time feature. This guide walks through how the space is laid out, how character progression works inside it, and what you can actually do there.
2. The Terrace and the Three Districts
The Grounds is organized around a central Terrace, a hub building that connects three districts, each styled after a different real-world football culture: Montclair, Zeiza and Parkside. Each district has its own street art, architecture and signage, and hosts a spread of pitches and activity venues rather than repeating the same layout three times.
)
Walking between districts, you'll pass full-size Rush pitches, 2v2 and 3v3 cages, a Keep Away court, and dedicated venues for mini-games like Balloon Ball and the Big Race. The Clubhouse itself sits at the Terrace, acting as the entry point into your Club's Leagues, Playoffs and Live Tournaments.

3. Archetypes: Building Your Street Player
Your created player in The Grounds is defined by an Archetype, a build that combines a broad role — goalkeeper, defender or attacker — with a signature PlayStyle. EA's official Grounds and Clubs breakdown confirms all of the game's Archetypes unlock by default, so you're not grinding to earn access to a build before you can try it. Archetypes span goalkeeping roles like Shot Stopper and Sweeper Keeper, defensive builds such as Progressor, Boss, Marauder, Disruptor and Recycler, and attacking builds including Maestro, Creator, Spark, Magician, Finisher and Target.
Each Archetype carries its own minimum and maximum attribute values, effectively capping how a build can be min-maxed. A defender running the Boss archetype and an attacker running Finisher will land on very different attribute caps, since each Archetype's minimums and maximums are tuned to the role and PlayStyle it's built around. New this year, resetting individual attributes on an Archetype no longer costs coins or a reset item — you can fine-tune a build in the moment instead of committing to a full reset.
Masteries add a long-term layer on top of Archetypes: hitting milestones with a specific build grants small, permanent attribute boosts that carry over to every Archetype you play afterward. EA's own example is reaching Level 10 with a Finisher Archetype, which permanently unlocks +1 Finishing and +1 Composure across the board.
4. Amps and AXP: Leveling Up Your Build
Amps are temporary performance boosts you equip before jumping into a match. They come in four tiers: Standard Tier 1 and 2 amps grant straightforward attribute boosts, while Signature Tier 3 and 4 amps add bigger boosts plus access to specific PlayStyles or Perks. You can equip up to three amps at once — two Standard and one Signature — and they apply for a set number of matches before you need to re-equip or refresh them.
Archetype progress itself is tracked through AXP (Archetype Experience Points), earned by playing matches and completing Objectives in The Grounds. AXP multiplier items boost every Archetype you own at once, while direct AXP consumables are more targeted, applying capped amounts — EA lists these caps as ranging from 25 to 50 AXP per item — directly to a single build you're trying to level up quickly.
5. Kickabouts: Eight Ways to Play Off the Pitch
Kickabouts are The Grounds' mini-games, mixing football with other sports rather than running standard matches. EA's deep dive lists eight of them:
- Bocce Ball — a 3-player free-for-all where you score by landing shots on targets worth different point values, with a scoring dead zone that subtracts points if you land in it.
- Team Keepaway — 3v3 possession football played in 3-minute rounds, rewarding strings of consecutive passes with scoring multipliers.
- The Big Race — a 4-player dribbling obstacle course that tests close control under pressure from other racers.
- Attacking Scenarios — 2v2 matches built around a randomized objective you need to complete.
- Bucket Ball — 2v2 hoop-shooting matches played over 3 minutes, blending basketball-style scoring zones with football technique.
- Balloon Ball — a 4-player elimination mini-game centered on floating balloon targets, scored per round.
- Goal Control — a 1v1 format with eight goals in play at once, split across three 1-minute rounds.
- Drop Kick Targets — a solo skill challenge based on hitting designated targets with accurate strikes.

6. Small-Sided Matches and Club Live Tournaments
Alongside the Kickabouts, The Grounds hosts competitive small-sided football in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and Rush formats, with matches lasting around three minutes on a variety of pitches scattered across the districts. Rush matches carry their own rule twists — EA's promotional material shows goals scored directly off a wall bounce being called out and rewarded during play.

For full 11-a-side football, Clubs now runs its Leagues and Playoffs structure through The Grounds, plus a new Club Live Tournaments format built around competitive 11v11 matches. Paulo Dybala serves as the in-game mentor guiding Club-focused activities and objectives, tying the mode's presentation together with the rest of Clubs.

7. Clubs, Objectives and the Season Pass
Progression in The Grounds runs through several parallel systems rather than a single experience bar. Club Objectives are split into Bronze, Silver and Gold milestones alongside weekly and seasonal tasks, rewarding both individual and collective Club progress with fans and consumables. A separate Season Pass track earns Season Points from match play and Objectives, unlocking cosmetics, Amps, consumables and coins as you climb it. Clubs themselves can be customized too, with stadium and clubhouse appearance options that reflect a Club's identity to anyone who visits.
All of this sits on top of the Archetype and Masteries systems covered above, so a session in The Grounds can simultaneously push your Club's weekly Objectives, add Season Points, and bank AXP toward your next Mastery unlock. If you're weighing this against the Ultimate Team side of FC 27, our breakdown of Season 1's Ones to Watch promo and Season Pass rewards covers how that track compares.
8. Platforms and How to Jump In
The Grounds is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the rest of EA Sports FC 27. It's included with the base game rather than gated behind a separate purchase or edition, so anyone who owns FC 27 — including players who used their early access window — can walk into the Terrace and start exploring from their first session. For a rundown of which edition unlocks early access and what each one includes, see our guide to FC 27's release editions and early access dates.
Quick Tips
- Try an Archetype from each role early — they're all unlocked from the start, so there's no grind before you can test a build that suits your playstyle.
- Save Signature Amps for matches where their PlayStyle or Perk actually matters; you can only run one at a time alongside two Standard Amps.
- Push a single Archetype to a Mastery milestone before spreading AXP thin across several builds — Masteries grant permanent boosts that apply everywhere.
- Rotate through Kickabouts like Bucket Ball, the Big Race and Goal Control between competitive matches; they count toward Objectives without the pressure of a full-sided game.
- Check your Club's weekly and seasonal Objectives before jumping into Kickabouts solo — some activities contribute to both individual and Club-wide progress.
