Quick Summary

EA SPORTS FC 27's Future Stars promo arrived in Ultimate Team on October 9, 2026, headlined by Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha and built around the returning Future Stars Academy Evolutions system. Here's how the Academy's four evolution steps, upgrade requirements and the rest of the promo's weekly content actually work.

EA Sports launched the Future Stars promo in EA Sports FC 27 Ultimate Team on October 9, 2026, bringing back the Future Stars Academy Evolutions system first introduced last year. The headline name is Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha, and the promo is built around upgrading a young player of your own choosing through real-world domestic league performances rather than simply opening packs.

Here's exactly how the promo works: who's involved, how the Academy Evolution upgrades are earned, and what else is live in Ultimate Team alongside it.

1. What Is Future Stars in FC 27 Ultimate Team?

Future Stars is a limited-time Ultimate Team promo that spotlights young players who are already performing well in their domestic leagues but haven't fully broken through yet. EA frames Future Stars Team 1 as headlined by Ngumoha, who the promo's own announcement calls "one of England's most promising young talents." According to EA, Ngumoha's Future Stars Academy card from EA Sports FC 26 was one of the most popular Academy Player Items in that game, with the publisher citing more than 312,000 Evolutions performed on it community-wide.

Future Stars Team 1 includes other young players from leagues around the world alongside Ngumoha, though EA's own announcement names Ngumoha specifically and doesn't publish a full roster in its article. The bigger mechanical story of the promo isn't the pack items — it's the return of the Future Stars Academy, which lets you build your own evolving young player instead of relying on what you pull.

2. How the Future Stars Academy Works

The Academy is an evolution path you apply to a player item you already own. To enroll, you need an eligible ST or CAM who was born on or after 9 October 2003 — in other words, a player young enough to plausibly be a "future star" himself. Once enrolled, that card can progress through four separate Academy Evolutions over the course of the promo.

EA also confirmed an Academy Objective drops partway through the promo window, rewarding squads that actively play minutes with their Academy Player Item rather than benching it once it's upgraded.

3. The Four Academy Evolutions and Upgrade Requirements

Each Academy Evolution step is earned by actually playing matches and hitting performance thresholds with the card — not purchased outright. EA's announcement lists two separate requirement tracks depending on which league the enrolled player's matches come from.

Standard track (all leagues except the Americas-based ones below)

  • 4 starts → +1 OVR (capped at 86)
  • 8 starts → +1 OVR (capped at 87)
  • 7 combined goals and assists for attackers/midfielders, or 4 clean sheets for defenders/goalkeepers → +1 PlayStyle+ (max 1)
  • 10 combined goals and assists for attackers/midfielders, or 7 clean sheets for defenders/goalkeepers → 5★ Weak Foot

NWSL, MLS, Liga MX and LPF track

EA set lower thresholds for these four leagues:

  • 2 starts → +1 OVR (capped at 86)
  • 3 starts → +1 OVR (capped at 87)
  • 2 combined goals and assists (attackers/midfielders) or 2 clean sheets (defenders/goalkeepers) → +1 PlayStyle+ (max 1)
  • 4 combined goals and assists (attackers/midfielders) or 3 clean sheets (defenders/goalkeepers) → 5★ Weak Foot

EA's fine print adds a few rules worth knowing before you enroll a card: clean-sheet upgrades only count if your goalkeeper or defender actually features in the match; if a player already sits at 1 PlayStyle+, that slot's reward becomes a Base PlayStyle instead; and if a player already has 5★ Weak Foot, that reward becomes 5★ Skill Moves instead. All of it is tracked from domestic league matches only — cup and continental appearances don't count toward the thresholds.

4. Who Can You Enroll? Eligible Positions

The Academy isn't limited to strikers and attacking midfielders once a card is enrolled — eligibility to start the Academy requires an ST or CAM, but the broader Future Stars upgrade mechanics EA describes apply across these position groups:

  • Attack/midfield: CM, CAM, LW, LM, RW, RM, ST
  • Defense/goalkeeper: GK, RB, LB, CB, CDM

Attackers and midfielders chase goal and assist thresholds, while defenders and goalkeepers are judged on clean sheets — so the card you pick to enroll should match a position where you can realistically hit those numbers in your own Ultimate Team games.

5. PlayStyle+ Lab and UEFA Star Performers

Future Stars also ties into FC 27's wider PlayStyle Lab system. EA confirmed the Lab levels up during Future Stars Week 2, unlocking the PlayStyle+ Lab tier. Alongside that, the first UEFA Star Performers become eligible for PlayStyle+ upgrades starting October 17, giving players another route to boost cards outside the Academy path. If you haven't dug into how PlayStyle+ differs from a base PlayStyle yet, our full breakdown of all 36 PlayStyles and PlayStyle+ covers the mechanic in detail.

6. Live Events Running During the Promo

EA is also running weekly limited-time events to go with the card releases:

  • Week 1: A "Back to Basics" Exhibition event that locks every squad into a strict 4-4-2 formation.
  • Week 2: The second Ultimate Gauntlet of the season, plus a new Flash Rush event.

EA says each week of the promo will bring its own new Live Event, so expect further formation or ruleset twists as Future Stars continues past its October 9 launch.

7. SBCs and Objectives

As with past promos, EA confirmed a range of Squad Building Challenges run throughout Future Stars, including both Player SBCs tied to individual Future Stars cards and Puzzle SBCs that reward fodder and packs for solving positional requirements. EA's announcement doesn't publish the full SBC list up front — those typically roll out in FUT in stages as the promo progresses, so check in-game regularly rather than assuming the full set is available on day one.

8. Where Future Stars Fits in FC 27's Ultimate Team Calendar

9. Quick Tips for Future Stars

  • Enroll an ST or CAM born on or after 9 October 2003 before you start grinding minutes — the Academy won't accept an ineligible card.
  • Check which of your domestic leagues qualifies for the lower NWSL/MLS/Liga MX/LPF thresholds before picking a card; it's a meaningfully easier path to the same rewards.
  • Remember clean sheets only count if your goalkeeper or defender actually plays in that match — benching them after a lead doesn't bank progress.
  • Hold off on fully upgrading a card that already has 1 PlayStyle+ or 5★ Weak Foot if you were hoping for a second copy of the same reward — EA substitutes a Base PlayStyle or 5★ Skill Moves instead once you're capped.
  • Future Stars runs in stages through at least October 16, with live upgrades for some cards continuing as late as February — don't assume a card is "finished" after the first evolution step.
