Quick Summary

EA's official Gameplay Deep Dive reworked how EA Sports FC 27 actually plays: AI defenders no longer auto-tackle, corners and crosses reward manual control, and through balls finally follow your exact input. Here's every confirmed change, straight from EA's own pitch notes.

EA Sports FC 27 didn't just add new modes at launch — it quietly rebuilt how the ball actually moves between players. The changes come straight from EA's own Gameplay Deep Dive pitch notes, and they touch almost every phase of play: defending is far less automated, corners and crosses now reward a second of manual control, attacking runs curve and overlap in new ways, and through balls finally go exactly where you aim them.

None of this is a patch note from a single update — it's the baseline EA built FC 27 on, confirmed in the official Gameplay Deep Dive published ahead of launch. Here's exactly what changed, section by section, and what it actually means the next time you pick up the controller.

1. Why EA Rebuilt the Core Gameplay

EA's design team framed the entire deep dive around one goal: handing more decisive moments back to the player instead of letting the AI resolve them automatically. In EA's own words, the studio has been "reducing the influence of AI-controlled defenders" across the pitch, while giving attackers more precise tools for crossing, passing, and dribbling. The result is a version of the game where your inputs — not background AI logic — decide more 50/50 moments.

2. Defending Goes Manual: AI Tackling, Jockeying and Contain

AI-Controlled Defenders No Longer Auto-Tackle

The single biggest change in FC 27: AI-controlled defenders will no longer automatically try to win the ball the moment a dribbler gets close to them. Instead, they hold position and track the runner, only stepping in on loose balls or if the dribbler runs directly into them. Tackling itself becomes a player-led action — if you want the ball won, you have to time the challenge yourself rather than letting the CPU teammate lunge in for you. EA also reduced AI defenders' interception reach, so standing off the ball is genuinely less effective than committing to a manual tackle.

Manual Jockeying and Stand Tackles Get Faster

To compensate, defenders under your direct control get faster jockeying and a wider range on manual stand tackles, so skilled defending is rewarded rather than offset by AI automation doing the work for you.

Teammate Contain Holds Its Distance

The "Contain" AI behavior — where a teammate shadows the ball carrier when you're controlling someone else — now marks from a slightly longer distance. EA's own side-by-side comparison from the deep dive shows the gap clearly: in FC 26 the contain defender crowded the attacker almost immediately, while in FC 27 he hangs back, which means you have to actively switch players and press manually to win the ball rather than relying on the AI to do it passively.

3. Corners and Crossing: More Control Before the Ball Arrives

The New Corner-Kick Window and Avoidance

Corner kicks (excluding short corners) now give you a short window after picking a target area where the camera shifts into the box, letting you move, switch players, make a run, shield the ball, or trigger a brand-new mechanic called Avoidance — holding R1/RB to shove through a crowd of bodies before the delivery arrives. Attacking players also no longer auto-run to the "best" spot to meet the ball; you have to put them there yourself.

Crossing Now Rewards Aim and Power

Crosses are reworked to land in space more often rather than being delivered directly onto a specific teammate's head. EA says the outcome now depends far more on your own aim and power input than on the game picking a target for you.

Headers Require Sharper Timing

As a consequence, clean headers are harder to pull off on instinct, but EA says they're more accurate when you do connect — trading some automatic reliability for precision in the hands of players who time it well.

4. Attacking Movement: Curved Runs and Pass & Follow

Triggered Curved Runs

FC 27 adds Triggered Curved Runs (L1+R1 or LB+RB), which bend a teammate's run into open space rather than sending them in a straight line — at the cost of taking slightly longer to develop than a standard run.

Pass & Follow Runs

A second new trigger, Pass & Follow (L1+R1+X or LB+RB+A), sends the passer themselves on a curved follow-up run after the ball is played — either overlapping on the outside or cutting back inside, depending on positioning.

Smarter Untriggered AI Runs

Even without a manual trigger, EA says AI-controlled attackers now read space, defensive shape and offside lines better, making "smarter, more contextual curved runs that better support each attacking move" — including wingers who curve into the box after releasing a pass instead of standing still. Manually triggered runs are capped at a limited distance, so spamming a run command won't carry a player the length of the pitch.

5. Passing Overhaul: Through Balls and Dinked Passes Go Manual

Ground and lobbed through passes now strictly follow your directional input instead of steering toward the nearest open passing lane — EA states plainly that "passes now strictly follow your directional input," so a miscued stick movement will send the ball off target rather than having the game quietly correct it for you. Ground and through Dinked Passes have also moved to a fully manual system, relying entirely on your own aim and power rather than built-in assistance. It's a straightforward trade: more precision for skilled passers, less forgiveness for sloppy input.

6. Off-Balance Dribbling: Riding Challenges Like the Pros

A new attribute-driven mechanic lets dribblers with the right mix of Balance, Agility and Dribbling stats stay on their feet and keep the ball after a collision, bump, or shoulder challenge, rather than automatically losing control. EA describes it as letting "the world's best dribblers ride challenges and maintain control under pressure" — a direct nod to real players who shrug off contact in open play. It's confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 only, so last-gen console versions won't see the same dribbling physics.

7. Knock-On Effects for PlayStyles and Attributes

Because defending and passing got less automated, EA also rebalanced several PlayStyles so no single ability dominates the new mechanics — narrowing the gap between a base PlayStyle and its upgraded "Plus" version for abilities like Finesse Shot, Technical Dribbler, Jockey and Precision Header, and removing outright animation-speed boosts from Rapid, Pinged Pass and Tiki-Taka. If you want the full rundown of all 36 abilities and how PlayStyle+ now compares, our complete PlayStyles breakdown covers every individual change in detail.

8. What This Actually Means When You Play

Taken together, these changes point in one direction: FC 27 expects more from the player and gives less credit to standing still. A few practical takeaways:

  • Stop relying on AI teammates to win tackles for you. Switch to the nearest defender and time challenges manually, especially in your own box.
  • Use the corner-kick window. Don't just fire the delivery immediately — move a runner into space or trigger Avoidance first.
  • Aim your through balls properly. The game will no longer bend a misaimed pass toward an open teammate.
  • Look for Triggered Curved Runs and Pass & Follow to create passing lanes the old straight-line runs couldn't open up.
  • Build dribblers around Balance, Agility and Dribbling if you want them to survive contact in the new Off-Balance system.

These mechanics sit underneath everything else EA has shipped since launch, from The Grounds' small-sided Kickabouts to the Ultimate Team changes covered in our Streamlined SBCs and Evolutions guide — so understanding the core gameplay shift helps in every mode, not just head-to-head matches. For everything else that changed at launch, our Early Access overview rounds up editions, release details and day-one features.

Quick-Tips Recap

  • AI defenders no longer auto-tackle — manual challenges and faster jockeying are now essential.
  • Corners pause for a short window: use it to move, shield, or trigger Avoidance.
  • Crosses land in space based on your aim, not an automatic target.
  • Triggered Curved Runs and Pass & Follow create new attacking patterns off the ball.
  • Through balls and dinked passes are now fully manual — aim carefully.
  • Off-Balance Dribbling rewards high Balance/Agility/Dribbling attributes on current-gen platforms only.
