EA Sports FC 27 PlayStyles Explained: All 36 Abilities and PlayStyle+
EA Sports FC 27 gives select players PlayStyles and PlayStyle+ badges — traits that boost specific on-pitch actions beyond raw attributes. Here's what all 36 abilities do, how PlayStyle+ differs from the base version, and how to earn them in Ultimate Team, Career Mode and The Grounds.
EA Sports FC 27 gives every player on the pitch a set of PlayStyles — traits that go beyond a card's raw attributes to grant real, on-ball advantages modeled on how specific professionals actually play. If you've noticed a defender who tackles cleaner than his stats suggest, or a winger who glides past markers with an extra bit of flair, a PlayStyle is usually why. Here's exactly how the system works, what changed for FC 27, and how to start using it in Ultimate Team, Career Mode, and The Grounds.
1. What PlayStyles Actually Do
According to EA's official breakdown, a PlayStyle is a trait that "grants or enhances specific abilities on the pitch beyond a Player's ratings or attributes." In practical terms, a high Shooting attribute makes a striker generally more dangerous, but a PlayStyle like Finesse Shot specifically improves the curl and placement of a finesse-style strike, independent of the base stat.
PlayStyles aren't decorative badges — they change how an action resolves in real time. During a match, performing the action tied to a PlayStyle automatically triggers it, and a small badge appears above the player's head the moment it activates.
2. PlayStyle vs. PlayStyle+: The Difference
Every PlayStyle exists at up to two tiers:
- PlayStyle (Silver badge) — grants a unique capability or improvement in a given action, such as a specific Ball Control or Shooting technique.
- PlayStyle+ (Gold badge) — represents world-class expertise in that same ability, pushing the enhancement further than the base version.
EA sums it up plainly: a PlayStyle slightly improves a certain area of play, and a PlayStyle+ furthers that improvement. A player can carry several PlayStyles and PlayStyle+ badges at once, and both can be inspected on their attribute card alongside the standard ratings.

4. Where PlayStyles Change Between FC 26 and FC 27
EA says "certain PlayStyles in FC 27 have been refined to rebalance their relationship with Player attributes," and that further tuning could follow based on community feedback after launch. The stated goal is to stop PlayStyle+ from overshadowing base attributes so both carry meaningful weight in a match. Two concrete changes called out by EA:
- The gap between PlayStyle and PlayStyle+ dribbling responsiveness has been narrowed slightly, so PlayStyle+ still feels smoother but no longer dominates as heavily.
- Non-PlayStyle players with a high Interceptions attribute now get improved reach and a better chance of retaining the ball on an interception, closing some of the gap with PlayStyle-equipped defenders.
5. How You Actually Get PlayStyles in Each Mode
Ultimate Team
Player Items already carry PlayStyles and PlayStyle+ by default, and you can add more through Evolutions. Each Evolution defines its own restrictions when you choose to apply it — commonly a cap on how many PlayStyles a card can hold, or limits tied to attribute thresholds — so read an Evolution's requirements before committing a card to it.
Created Players (The Grounds and Player Career)
For a player you build yourself, earning a PlayStyle or PlayStyle+ comes down to hitting specified prerequisites: reaching a given attribute threshold, or selecting one directly through leveling up. If you're just getting into the mode, our guide to navigating The Grounds and its Archetype system covers how that leveling actually works.
Manager Mode
Players you manage can gain PlayStyles and PlayStyle+ badges through Training or while coming up through the Youth Academy, in addition to whatever they start with by default.
6. Five Tips for Using PlayStyles Well
- Gold standard. Expect a real, if incremental, jump in effectiveness between a base PlayStyle and its PlayStyle+ version — it's not just a cosmetic upgrade.
- Understand the impact before you rely on it. Check the in-game menus or EA's own PlayStyle write-ups so you know exactly what an ability changes rather than guessing from the name.
- Skill still unlocks the payoff. A PlayStyle only pays off if your input sets up the right situation — timing a tackle, angling a shot, holding up play — the trait amplifies good execution, it doesn't replace it.
- When in doubt, add one. If an Evolution or Career upgrade offers a PlayStyle with room under your caps, it's rarely a bad pickup — just track any limits on how many a card or player can carry.
- Test it offline first. Use the Practice Arena or an offline Play Now match to compare a player with a PlayStyle against one without it, so you see the real difference before it matters in a ranked or competitive game.
PlayStyles are one of the clearer ways EA Sports FC 27 ties its virtual players back to real footballing identity — Bellingham's tackling, Musiala's close control, Barcola's take-ons, and Mbappé's bursts of pace are all, in part, PlayStyle-driven. Recognizing which badge is doing the work is the fastest way to get more out of both your Ultimate Team squad and your own created player.
Quick recap: 36 total PlayStyles and PlayStyle+ abilities across Finishing, Passing, Ball Control, Defending, and Goalkeeper categories; PlayStyle+ deepens a base PlayStyle rather than replacing it; Ultimate Team cards gain them through Evolutions, created players through leveling and attribute thresholds, and managed pros through Training and the Youth Academy; and FC 27 specifically narrowed the PlayStyle-vs-attribute gap compared to FC 26.
