1. Release Date, Platforms, and Price

Control Resonant launches digitally on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), and Xbox Series X|S, with GeForce NOW cloud streaming available from day one. A physical retail release for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S follows on October 15, 2026. A macOS version, via Steam and the App Store, is planned for later in 2026.

Players who pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe Edition on PS5 got a 48-hour early access head start, which opened on September 22 at 7:00 AM PT / 10:00 AM ET.

  • Standard Edition — $59.99
  • Digital Deluxe Edition — $69.99 (includes a digital artbook, the digital soundtrack, an alternate outfit for Dylan, and starter resources, plus the 48-hour early access window)
  • The Siblings Collection — $98.98 bundle (Control Ultimate Edition plus Control Resonant Deluxe Edition, a 10% discount versus buying separately)

On PC, Remedy lists a minimum of 16GB of RAM and 120GB of free SSD storage, so clear space well ahead of launch day.

2. Who Is Dylan Faden? Story and Setting Explained

Control Resonant hands the controller to Dylan Faden, the estranged brother of the first game's protagonist, Jesse Faden. Dylan first appeared as a supporting character in 2019's Control, where his Hiss possession played a central role in the plot. He's now released from Federal Bureau of Control custody as a "parautilitarian" — someone with paranormal abilities the Bureau can put to use — to help contain a crisis that has engulfed downtown Manhattan, while also searching for his missing sister.

The threat this time isn't confined to the Bureau's shifting headquarters, the Oldest House. Manhattan itself has been overrun by an escaped extradimensional anomaly, a resurgent Hiss presence, and an invasive growth known as the Mold, turning entire city blocks into the kind of reality-bending, brutalist-tinged nightmare the series is known for — just out in the open streets this time instead of behind Bureau walls.

3. Gameplay: The Aberrant and Dylan's Powers

Where Jesse Faden's story leaned on third-person gunplay backed by telekinetic powers, Dylan's campaign shifts the series toward melee-focused action-RPG combat. His signature weapon, the Aberrant, is a shapeshifting armament that morphs on demand — Remedy has shown it taking the form of a two-handed hammer, dual-wielded blades, and other melee configurations, and players can reportedly equip up to three of its forms at once to swap mid-fight.

Dylan's paranormal side is still very much present: environments remain built around gravity-defying traversal, levitating debris, and perception-bending spaces, and Remedy has added character statistics, multiple talent trees, and weapon customization on top of the exploration-driven structure the series is known for. It's a heavier RPG lean than the original game had, while keeping the same sense of a city (rather than a single facility) as an explorable, secret-filled playground.

Gravity-Bending Exploration

Reviewers have singled out the game's level design, which repeatedly flips and warps city geography — walking up the side of a building to find yourself standing on what was previously the ceiling of a city block, with traffic, signage, and debris reoriented around you.

Talent Trees and Loadouts

On top of the shapeshifting Aberrant, Dylan's build is shaped by character statistics and multiple talent trees, letting players lean into heavier hard-hitting forms, faster dual-wielded combos, or a more paranormal-power-focused playstyle. Weapons are also customizable, so a run built around crowd control against swarms of Hiss-corrupted enemies can look very different from one focused on single hard-hitting bosses. It's a more traditional action-RPG progression loop than the ability-and-gun upgrade path Jesse followed in the original game.

4. How Control Resonant Fits the Remedy Connected Universe

Control Resonant is the third major release in Remedy's shared universe, following the original Control (2019) and the co-op spin-off FBC: Firebreak (June 2025), which was set six years after the first game and followed a squad of Bureau field agents rather than Jesse or Dylan directly. Control Resonant picks the timeline up roughly seven years after the original game.

The game was first teased in an optional scene inside Alan Wake 2's "The Lake House" expansion back in October 2024, cementing the long-running crossover thread between the two series. Ahti, the recurring janitor character who ties Remedy's games together, appears again here in a smaller role, and the story continues weaving in connective tissue with the Alan Wake side of the universe for players who have followed both franchises.

5. What Critics Are Saying

Control Resonant launched to generally favorable reviews. As of launch week, Metacritic lists the game at 84 on PS5, 83 on PC, and 81 on Xbox Series X|S, while OpenCritic has it at an 86% recommend rate. Critics have praised the exceptional level design, the gravity-bending vision of Manhattan, and Dylan's evolving melee combat as some of Remedy's best work yet. The most common criticisms are performance hitches, some repetitive open-world side activities, and late-game boss encounters that a few reviewers found less inspired than the rest of the campaign.

Notably, Control Resonant launched the same week as Konami's Silent Hill: Townfall, giving horror and paranatural-action fans two major new releases within 48 hours of each other.

6. Do You Need to Play Control First?

No. Remedy has built Control Resonant to stand on its own, with Dylan's story functioning as an entry point that doesn't require prior knowledge of Jesse's campaign. That said, players who enjoyed the original's mix of exploration and paranormal combat — or who liked the melee-heavy combat systems in other recent action games such as our guide to Marvel's Wolverine's combat, Rage meter, and skills — will recognize a lot of familiar DNA here, just reworked around a new protagonist and a much bigger, more open setting.
