Candy Crush Saga Boosters, Special Candies, Lives and Events Explained
Candy Crush Saga has run for over a decade, but new players still face the same core systems: three special candies, named boosters, a five-life energy meter and rotating live events. Here's how each one actually works, based on King's own official game information.
Candy Crush Saga has been on phones since 2012, and it is still one of the most-played mobile games in the world. That long life means its systems — special candies, boosters, the life meter, episodes, live events — are mostly unchanged in concept even as King keeps adding new levels and seasonal content. If you are new to the game, coming back after a break, or just want to understand why your board behaves the way it does, here is how each core system actually works, based on King's own game description and in-game materials.
1. How the Board and Matching Work
Candy Crush Saga is a tile-matching puzzle game: you swap two adjacent candies to line up three or more of the same color in a row or column. A successful match clears those candies, the board drops new ones in from the top, and any chain reactions keep resolving until the board settles. Most levels add a secondary objective on top of simple matching — clearing jelly tiles underneath the candies, collecting a set number of a particular color, or breaking through obstacles like frosting, chocolate and locked candies before you run out of moves.
Later worlds introduce board layouts with irregular shapes, multiple layers of obstacles, and ingredients (like cherries or orders) that have to travel down to the bottom of the board rather than just being cleared. The core swap-and-match input never changes, but what counts as "finishing" a level gets more elaborate the further you progress.
2. The Three Special Candies Explained
Matching more than three candies at once creates a special candy that clears extra tiles when it is triggered. There are three of them, and recognizing how each one forms is the single most useful thing a new player can learn:
- Striped candy — created by matching four candies in a row or column. When cleared, it wipes an entire row (if it's horizontally striped) or an entire column (if vertically striped).
- Wrapped candy — created by matching five candies in an L or T shape. It detonates twice, clearing a 3x3 area around itself each time.
- Color bomb — created by matching five candies in a straight line. Swapping it with any normal candy clears every candy of that color from the board.
Special candies can also be combined by swapping two of them next to each other, which produces a much bigger effect than triggering them separately — for example, swapping two striped candies clears both the row and column they're in at once, and a color bomb paired with a striped candy turns every candy of the matched color into a striped candy and detonates them all simultaneously. Learning to set up these combos deliberately, rather than matching on autopilot, is what separates clearing a hard level with moves to spare from running out just short of the goal.
3. Boosters: Bonbon Blitz, Lollipop Hammer and Jelly Fish
Outside of candies created on the board, King's own description of the game names several boosters players can bring into a level to deal with especially sticky situations: Bonbon Blitz, the Lollipop Hammer, and the Jelly Fish, alongside extra-move boosters for levels you're close to clearing. Boosters are earned through daily rewards, events, or purchased, and most can be selected from a tray before a level starts or used mid-level if you get stuck.
The game's own pitch for boosters is blunt about when to use them: "Stuck on a level? Boosters and extra moves will help you blast through any obstacle." In practice that means saving boosters for levels you've already failed once or twice rather than spending them on levels you haven't attempted yet — you'll usually learn a board's layout on the first try for free.
4. Lives, Energy and Daily Rewards
Candy Crush Saga runs on a life system rather than a hard paywall. Players start with five lives, lose one each time a level is failed, and lives regenerate automatically over time if you run out — or can be requested from friends, since the game supports connecting to Facebook specifically to "share lives, compare scores, and see who's the match-3 master in your friends circle." King also runs a standing incentive to log in daily: "Log in every day to claim free boosters and extra lives," on top of separate time-limited events with their own prizes. The game can also be played fully offline, with no ads interrupting a session.
5. Episodes and the World Map
Levels are grouped into episodes as you move along the world map, each themed around a different part of the Candy Kingdom. According to the game's own structure, each episode contains a set of 15 levels before the map opens onto the next one. Clearing a level earns stars based on your score, and those stars (along with completing daily objectives) are what unlock new episodes and areas of the map as you progress, rather than any kind of level-skipping shortcut.
6. Game Modes: Gummy Dragons and Bubblegum Pop
Beyond the standard board, King has built dedicated level types into the game that change the objective entirely. Its current store listing specifically calls out Gummy Dragons and Bubblegum Pop as game modes layered on top of classic match-3 play, each with its own twist on the swap-and-match formula rather than being a separate app. Players who enjoy Candy Crush Saga's format can also find related spin-offs from the same studio — King points players toward Candy Crush Soda Saga and Farm Heroes Saga for "fresh twists on classic match-3 puzzles," and Candy Crush Solitaire for a card-based take on the same candy world.
7. Events and Tournaments: All Stars and the Music Season
King runs Candy Crush Saga's live calendar on two tracks: short in-game events with their own prizes, and bigger annual tournaments. The biggest of 2026 was Candy Crush All Stars, open to players level 5 and up: the in-game qualifying event ran from March 5 to April 8, and the top performers were flown to a live final in London from June 3–6 to compete for a share of a $1,000,000 prize pool. King's official recap, "10 Players. $1,000,000. One Candy Crush Champion," documents the finale on its YouTube channel.
More recently, King has been running a Music Season built around real-world artist collaborations rather than a one-off tournament. In September, the official channel published a behind-the-scenes look at a collaboration with Shania Twain and Zedd built around "You're Still The One," filmed on an in-game-themed "Candy Country" set.
Crossovers like this sit alongside the smaller, rotating themed events the game runs constantly — collect-a-set challenges, timed board races, and team-based competitions — all accessible from the Events tab on the world map screen.
8. Quick Tips for New and Returning Players
- Play a hard level once without boosters first — you'll learn the board's obstacle layout for free before deciding whether a booster is worth spending.
- Prioritize combining two special candies over triggering them separately; a striped-and-wrapped or color-bomb combo clears far more of the board per move.
- Check the Events tab on the map screen regularly — King rotates in new timed challenges often, and some only run for a few days.
- Connect to Facebook if you want to send and receive lives from friends rather than waiting out the regeneration timer alone.
- Don't rush episodes for their own sake — stars earned from higher scores, not just clearing the level, are usually what unlocks the next area.
