Baba Is You: Rules, Core Mechanics and Beginner Tips Explained
Baba Is You turns level rules into pushable word blocks you can rearrange to change what's true. Here's how the core mechanic works, the key vocabulary to learn, and beginner tips for solving its trickiest rooms.
1. What Is Baba Is You?
Baba Is You is an award-winning puzzle game created by Finnish developer Arvi "Hempuli" Teikari and published under the studio name Hempuli Oy. It began life as an entry for the 2017 Nordic Game Jam before growing into a full release, and it went on to win the Excellence in Design and Best Student Game awards at the 2018 Independent Games Festival, with a further nomination for the event's top prize, the Seumas McNally Grand Prize. The finished game launched for PC (Steam, Humble Store and itch.io) and Nintendo Switch on March 13, 2019, with iOS and Android versions following on June 22, 2021.
What makes it stand out from other logic and escape-room-style puzzlers is simple to describe and endlessly deep in practice: the rules of each level are not fixed. They exist as physical blocks of text sitting right there in the room with you, and pushing them around rewrites what is and isn't possible.
2. The Core Mechanic: Rules You Can Physically Push Around
Every level opens with a short sentence made of word blocks, something like BABA IS YOU. That sentence is the rule currently in effect: it tells the game which object you control. Nearby, other sentences define the rest of the room — WALL IS STOP keeps walls solid, and FLAG IS WIN makes touching the flag end the level.
Because those sentences are made of pushable blocks, you can walk into them and knock the words out of order, breaking the rule entirely, or slide a word out of one sentence and into another to build something new. Push the word "ROCK" next to "IS" and "YOU," and the rock becomes the character you're controlling instead of the little horned Baba sprite. Every solution in the game comes from treating grammar as a physical object rather than a fixed instruction.
Breaking and Remaking Rules
A level that looks impossible at first glance is usually solved by deleting the rule that's blocking you. If a wall of rock is sealing off the flag and "ROCK IS STOP" is written nearby, pushing just one word out of that sentence — turning it into "ROCK STOP" with no "IS," for instance — switches the rule off completely and lets you walk straight through. The reverse is just as common: dragging a spare "IS" and "WIN" into position next to an object you're standing on can let you win a level in a single move that the designer never explicitly telegraphed. The community has documented plenty of these unintended-but-valid shortcuts, and the developer has said more than once that a "wrong" solution the puzzle still allows is a correct one.
3. The Vocabulary: Nouns, Properties and Verbs
Once the basic "Noun IS Property" pattern clicks, the game starts layering in more verbs and conditional logic. PUSH and PULL make objects move with you; STOP makes them solid; SINK destroys anything that touches that object along with the object itself; MELT and HOT work as a pair, so a hot object will melt anything with the melt property; DEFEAT removes whatever touches it; and SHUT and OPEN pair a door with a key. Beyond properties, the game introduces full verbs like HAS, MAKE and AND, letting you chain conditions ("BABA IS YOU AND SHUT," for example) or have one object transform into another entirely.
Later levels combine several of these ideas at once. A single room might have a locked door, a pushable rock that can plug a gap, and a swarm of enemies whose behavior is itself written as a rule you can edit rather than a fixed AI pattern.
4. Beginner Tips for New Players
Baba Is You rarely explains itself beyond the opening rooms, so here are a few habits worth building early:
- Read every sentence in the room, including the ones that look like decoration. A word sitting off to the side by itself is almost always meant to be pushed into a sentence later.
- Remember that "Baba" is not special. The name only matters because the starting rule says "BABA IS YOU." Swap any noun into that sentence and you're now playing as that object instead, with all of its usual behavior.
- Undo liberally. Pushing word blocks around is reversible, and testing a rule change costs you nothing but a keypress. There's rarely a reason to over-plan a move in your head when you can just try it.
- Look for rules you can delete, not just ones you can build. New players tend to focus only on adding sentences; some of the game's best "aha" moments come from realizing a rule that's actively hurting you can simply be knocked apart.
- Words are objects too. A word block can be picked up, pushed, turned into something SINK-able, or even made to control itself if you write "TEXT IS YOU." Nothing on the board is purely scenery.
5. The Level Editor and Custom Puzzles
Hempuli added an official, built-in level editor in a free update on November 17, 2021, alongside more than 150 additional developer-made puzzles that showcase what the tool can do. The editor exposes the same rule-block system used in the main campaign, so anyone can design and share new rooms without needing outside software. It plugs into Steam Workshop on PC, giving the game a growing library of community-made puzzle packs on top of the base campaign's 200-plus levels, and it has become one of the main ways the puzzle-design community keeps finding new tricks the base rules allow.
6. Where the Game Stands Today
Baba Is You has kept receiving free updates well past launch. The most recent major one, version 481d, shipped on January 2, 2026, and the developer described it as most likely the final large update for the game. It added a batch of new objects — including Bean, Fox, Chili, Hotdog, Brain, Bone, Cactus and Palm, plus Yes/No checkmark-style objects — along with new words aimed mainly at the modding and level-editor community, a round of bug fixes, and expanded support for custom content. Players on older community tools noted the update could affect compatibility with some third-party mods, so creators working with heavily modified setups should check their tools still line up after updating.
7. Where to Play Baba Is You
The game is available on PC through Steam, the Humble Store and itch.io, on Nintendo Switch through the eShop, and on iOS and Android. PC and Switch versions are priced at $14.99, while the mobile releases are $6.99 and include the full 200-plus level campaign as a one-time purchase with no ads or in-app purchases. Save files and the level editor are not cross-platform, so progress made on Switch won't carry over to a PC or mobile copy.
If you've already cleared the main campaign, the Workshop-hosted community levels and the official level editor are the best way to keep going — many of the hardest and most creative puzzles in the game's community were never part of the base release at all.
Quick Tips Recap
- Check every rule sentence on screen before moving — nothing is decorative.
- "Baba" is just a name; any noun can become "YOU" if you rewrite the rule.
- Deleting a rule is as valid a solution as building one.
- Undo early and often — testing a rule change is free.
- Once the campaign is done, the built-in level editor and Steam Workshop packs add hundreds more puzzles.
Baba Is You's rule-pushing format has influenced plenty of word- and logic-based puzzle design since 2019, the same spirit that drives the layered mechanics in Monument Valley 3's architecture-bending puzzles.
