Quick Summary

Apex Legends Season 31, Cipher, launches November 3, 2026 with full patch notes on November 2. Respawn has confirmed a complete Crypto rework, a new Strongholds loot location, the Akimbo Wingman, Legend Bans in Diamond+ ranked, and buffs or nerfs to Revenant, Lifeline and Loba.

Respawn Entertainment has confirmed Apex Legends Season 31: Cipher, and it is the biggest shake-up the battle royale has had in months. Full patch notes land on November 2, 2026, with the season itself going live on November 3, 2026, bringing a complete rework of Crypto, a new high-risk loot location called Strongholds, the first akimbo weapon since Season 22, and buffs or nerfs to four other Legends.

Here is everything Respawn has officially confirmed so far, straight from the "New Updates Coming with Apex Legends: Cipher" preview and the 31.0 Designer's Notes, with nothing added that Respawn hasn't put its name to.

1. When Cipher Launches and What's Already Confirmed

Cipher follows directly after the current season, Marked. Respawn's Designer's Notes state the full patch notes publish on November 2, 2026, with the season launch on November 3, 2026. Respawn has not published an exact launch time in these notes, so check the in-game countdown or the official Cipher game updates page close to launch for the hour.

The headline additions are a reworked Crypto, a new Strongholds point of interest, the Akimbo Wingman, Legend Bans in high-tier ranked, and balance changes to Revenant, Lifeline and Loba. If you want the ranked-specific groundwork Respawn laid before this patch, our earlier breakdown of the full Season 31–32 ranked roadmap covers what was previewed months ago.

2. Crypto's Rework: From Passive Scout to Aggressive Intel Threat

Crypto gets the headline rework of Season 31. Respawn's own framing is that a firmware upgrade from his sister Mila shifts his kit "from passive to aggressive intel-gathering," and the Designer's Notes lay out specific changes to all three of his abilities.

  • Passive: The old "Ally.MoveTo()" drone-ping functionality is now built into his base kit, giving Crypto a speed boost when running toward teammates.
  • Tactical: His Surveillance Drone now runs on a 25-second battery instead of a flat cooldown, so it auto-recalls after use and can be redeployed more flexibly. The drone can mark enemies in sight for 8 seconds, sharing the tag with the squad, and Respawn says drone scanning of doors and loot bins has been removed.
  • Ultimate: His EMP now has three trigger states. Fired without drone line of sight on a target, enemies take 50 shield damage and a slight slow; fired with line of sight, they take full shield damage and a stronger slow. It can also now be triggered with the press of a button rather than a channel.
  • Upgrades: One upgrade path extends enemy marks from 8 to 12 seconds in place of the old Ally.MoveTo() perk, and "Hackathon" is replaced by "Charged Up," which adds 10 seconds of battery life.

3. Strongholds Replace the Old High-Risk Loot Routine

Strongholds are a new Battle Royale air drop that lands alongside the usual Care Packages, one per match. Unlike a Care Package, a Stronghold lands locked, and a squad has to actively capture and hold the area before they can open it. According to the Designer's Notes, the reward includes Care Package-tier weaponry, Gold Guns, corrupted attachments and EVO for the whole squad, but opening the vault takes time and trips an alarm that reveals the squad's location to everyone nearby. Strongholds also deploy their own dynamic cover and Hardlight barriers on landing, which changes how a squad can safely approach or defend one.

In practice this turns Strongholds into a contested objective rather than a free pickup — a squad has to decide whether the loot is worth announcing their position to the rest of the lobby.

4. Akimbo Wingman and the Rest of the Weapon Changes

The Akimbo Wingman is the first dual-wield weapon added to Apex Legends since Season 22. Respawn describes it as a "burst" akimbo setup where both Wingman revolvers fire sequentially rather than simultaneously, combining the weapon's usual precision with extra raw firepower in a single engagement.

Alongside the new weapon, the Hemlok Burst AR is returning to the care package weapon class, and the Hemlok Breach AR (the "Elite Hemlok" added in Update 28.1) is being vaulted to make room for it. On the balance side, both the Prowler and the Nemesis are receiving nerfs aimed at reducing how reliable they are compared to the rest of the weapon pool — Respawn's notes don't list exact numbers for either change, so expect the specifics to show up in the full November 2 patch notes.

5. Legend Balance: Revenant and Lifeline Buffed, Loba Nerfed

Three more Legends get kit changes in Cipher, on top of Crypto's full rework:

  • Revenant gets a faster Tactical (5-second cooldown reduction plus quicker attack and charge time, both built into his base kit) and a stronger Ultimate: a 30-second cooldown reduction, removal of the old 35-second timer cap, and knocks now extend the Ultimate's duration by 5 seconds each. New upgrade options let players stack even more duration per knock, add a silence pulse when Shadow Pounce lands, or refresh Shadow Pounce automatically after marking an enemy.
  • Lifeline can now use her Tactical's self-healing while gliding, and the 10-second Tactical cooldown reduction that used to be an upgrade is now part of her base kit. Her upgrade tree changes too: BattPack is removed, Enhanced Radio moves down to replace it, and a new Level 3 option adds a Revive Shield plus a 60-second Ultimate cooldown reduction.
  • Loba is nerfed on both abilities: her Tactical cooldown rises from 25 to 30 seconds, and her Ultimate cooldown rises from 120 to 150 seconds.

Separately, Respawn's October 1 hotfix already adjusted Axle — Nitro Gate now carries more risk, aim assist is disabled in some contexts during his Tactical, and his Kickstart Ultimate must be fired from farther away so the drone telegraphs itself before players launch. Those Axle changes are live now and carry into Cipher rather than being new to this patch.

6. Ranked Shakeup: Legend Bans Arrive in Diamond and Above

Cipher introduces Legend Bans to Diamond-tier ranked lobbies and above. Each player casts one vote to ban a Legend before the match starts, and the more votes a particular Legend receives across the lobby, the higher the chance that Legend is actually banned for that game. This is a direct response to the matchmaking and team-composition issues Respawn has been tracking — their own data cited in the Designer's Notes shows the most-picked ranked team composition currently sits below 1% of all team comps, which the studio frames as evidence that a small number of picks are over-dominating high-level play.

If you're grinding ranked this split, it's worth reading our breakdown of ranked matchmaking and premade squads, since Legend Bans is Respawn's most direct answer yet to the team-composition problems raised there.

7. Map, Cosmetics and the Road to Season 32

District, the map added earlier this year, is reverting its day/night cycle back to nighttime after a previous rework had moved it to daytime. Respawn says the team plans to keep experimenting with day/night variations across future patches rather than settling on one permanently.

On the cosmetic side, Cipher introduces a new Mythic Volt SMG called Cryptic Core, which comes with a built-in PALS assistant and Exotic Shard unlocks that change its retheme and sound. It's available through Cipher Seasonal Packs for the whole season, alongside new seasonal skins for Crypto, Wraith, Gibraltar, Revenant and Horizon — though Respawn notes the packs aren't available in all regions. Looking further out, Respawn has confirmed a Season 32 map update called Kings Canyon Evolved, reworking the original map with new, remixed and touched-up points of interest, planned for early 2027.

8. Quick Recap

  • Full patch notes: November 2, 2026. Season launch: November 3, 2026.
  • Crypto reworked top to bottom — battery-based drone, Sentry marking, a three-tier EMP Ultimate.
  • Strongholds replace part of the Care Package loop with a capture-and-hold vault that alerts the lobby when opened.
  • Akimbo Wingman added; Hemlok Burst AR returns; Prowler and Nemesis nerfed.
  • Revenant and Lifeline buffed; Loba's cooldowns extended.
  • Legend Bans added to Diamond+ ranked lobbies.
  • District's night cycle returns; Kings Canyon Evolved confirmed for Season 32 in early 2027.

If any of these numbers shift between now and launch, Respawn's own patch notes on November 2 are the page to recheck. New to the game entirely? Our 2026 beginner's guide to classes, currencies and modes is a good starting point before Cipher adds yet another layer of systems to learn, and it's worth dialing in your sensitivity and HUD settings before Strongholds fights start putting you in close-quarters duels against akimbo Wingmen.
