Here is exactly how it works, what the six age groups unlock, and what actually happens to your face scan afterward.
None of this is a rumor or a leak. Every detail below comes from Roblox's own age-estimation page, its investor relations announcement, and its engineering newsroom post on the system — not from a fan theory about why someone got locked out of chat.
1. Why Roblox Requires an Age Check for Chat
Roblox began requiring age checks to access chat in December 2025, starting with a rollout in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, before expanding to the United States on January 7, 2026 and to the rest of its chat-available regions within about a week. Roblox describes itself as the first large online gaming platform to require an age check for users of all ages to access chat.
Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman framed the goal around building "proactive, age-based barriers" so people can "create and connect in ways that are both safe and appropriate." In practice, that means the system is built to stop children under 16 from being able to chat with adults by default, and to keep the platform's youngest users away from open chat entirely unless a parent opts them in.
2. How Facial Age Estimation Actually Works
When a player triggers an age check, Roblox asks them to capture a short selfie video using their device's camera. That footage is sent to Persona, the third-party vendor Roblox uses for the estimation itself, which analyzes facial features to produce an estimated age rather than checking a document or an entered birthdate.
Roblox says the technology has been independently tested for accuracy by the Age Check Certification Scheme (ACCS) in the United Kingdom, and that Persona's models achieved a Mean Absolute Error of just 1.4 years for minors under 18 in that testing. Roblox also states the system meets ACCS 1:2020 Level 3 "Highly Effective" compliance and the ISO/IEC 30107-3 anti-spoofing standard, and that it "scans for common fraud attempts" during the check.
Persona is described by Roblox as GDPR compliant and operating in Europe, and as a company that "does not sell an individual's data or permit access to third parties for any reason."
3. The Six Age Groups and What They Unlock
Once a check is complete, an account is sorted into one of six age bands: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. That band, not a self-reported birthday, is what now governs a huge amount of the social experience on the platform.
By default, an account can chat with users in its own age group plus the group directly above and directly below it. A 12-year-old, for example, can chat with other 9–12s as well as with 13–15s, but the system is designed to prevent that same 12-year-old from being able to chat with an 18–20 or 21+ account by default. Roblox has also said upcoming features will use the same age bands to gate things like linking social media accounts (limited to age-checked users 13+) and early-2026 access to Studio Team Create collaboration tools.
Trusted Friends Still Exist
Age checks don't erase existing relationships outright. Roblox's system allows for "trusted friends" connections that can bridge outside an account's normal age band in specific, permitted ways — for example, a family relationship a parent has verified — rather than applying the same blanket rule to every contact regardless of context.
4. Under 9: Chat Is Off by Default
Roblox's youngest age band gets the strictest default setting of the six. Chat is turned off entirely for accounts estimated to be under 9, and it stays off unless a parent completes their own verification step and explicitly consents to turning it on. That is a deliberate design choice rather than a side effect of the estimation model: Roblox is opting the youngest cohort out of open chat by default and requiring an adult to actively opt back in.
5. Beyond the Selfie: How Roblox Keeps Checking
Roblox's engineering team has been explicit that the selfie is only the starting point, not the end of the process. In an August 2026 newsroom post, the company said its Facial Age Estimation system has processed more than 338 million age-check records, and that a separate high-throughput machine-learning layer continuously evaluates whether an account's ongoing behavior still matches its estimated age band.
According to that post, the production model is trained on nearly 30 million high-confidence age labels, runs inference across roughly 2 billion account-level records a day, and reaches a mean average precision above 0.9 on its weighted evaluation data. Roblox says more than 99% of high-confidence estimates stay within the same broad age band from one day to the next, and that the model's adult classifications agree with human reviewer consensus more than 80% of the time at high confidence. The company's own framing for this ongoing layer is blunt: "age assurance doesn't end at the selfie."
6. What Happens to Your Photo
Roblox states that images and video captured for a Facial Age Estimation check are deleted once they have been securely processed — the platform says it does not keep a copy of the scan itself after the age estimate has been produced. The ongoing behavioral checks described above run on account activity signals, not on stored photos, which is how Roblox says it can keep re-evaluating an account's age band without holding on to biometric images indefinitely.
7. How to Take (or Retake) an Age Check
An age check is typically prompted the first time an account tries to use a chat feature that now requires one. The process itself is a short in-app camera capture rather than a document upload for most users. If a parent later needs to adjust a child's result — for instance, to enable chat for an under-9 account — Roblox's support documentation describes a one-time parental adjustment option tied to the parent's own verified account.
8. If You Think Roblox Got It Wrong
Because Facial Age Estimation produces a probabilistic estimate rather than checking an ID, Roblox does account for the possibility that it places someone in the wrong band. Players aged 13 and up who believe their estimated age is inaccurate can go through ID verification instead, which overrides the facial estimate. Roblox's in-app moderation prompts also include a direct path to flag a result as a mistake, separate from the ID-verification route, for cases like an incorrectly issued chat suspension tied to a Community Standards warning.
