Quick Summary

Roblox is rolling out shoppable Moments clips, a Chat tab that follows friends between games, preset Quick Words for safer coordination, and the platform's first pre-roll video ads. Here's exactly what's changing, when, and who's exempt.

Roblox is rolling out one of its biggest batches of player-facing changes in years, and most of it has nothing to do with a specific game. Following September's RDC 2026 developer conference and the ongoing rollout of a redesigned mobile app, Roblox is adding shopping directly inside the Moments video feed, a Chat tab that now follows you between games, preset "Quick Words" for coordinating with teammates, and the platform's first pre-roll video ads. Here's exactly what's changing, what's already live, and what's still on the way.

1. The Moments Tab Adds In-Video Shopping This October

Moments is Roblox's TikTok-style discovery feed: a scrollable stream of gameplay clips from friends and selected creators, with a one-tap Join button under every video that drops you straight into the featured game. It first rolled out as part of a wider app redesign on July 28, 2026, alongside new Chat and Me tabs, starting in Canada, New Zealand and Singapore before expanding globally over the following months. Roblox said the tab was built to close the gap between "discovering a game and playing it" — a gap that previously sent a lot of that discovery traffic to YouTube and TikTok instead.

At RDC 2026, Roblox confirmed the next step: starting this October, players will be able to buy avatar items directly from a Moments video without leaving the clip. Roblox also said Build-created games — the mobile-first titles made with its text-prompt creation tool — will become playable inside Moments "in coming months," folding its newest creator pipeline into the same discovery surface. Moments and Chat currently require players to be 16 or older to use.

2. Chat Now Follows You Between Games — Plus Quick Words for Safer Coordination

The redesign also moved messaging into its own dedicated Chat tab in the main navigation bar. The headline change is persistence: conversations are meant to "travel seamlessly" with a player from the app into a game and back out again, so a conversation about strategy doesn't reset every time someone joins a new experience. Roblox paired the feature with several safety layers it says apply across Chat — age-checks, a Trusted Friends system for closer contacts, and real-time rephrasing that flags or softens uncivil messages as they're typed.

On top of that, Roblox used its RDC 2026 developer recap to detail Quick Words, rolling out later in 2026: short preset phrases — Roblox's own example is "start your engines" for a racing game — that are reviewed ahead of time for policy compliance so players of all ages have a safe, pre-approved way to coordinate without typing free text. The same recap mentions a voice-typing option for Chat, letting players dictate messages instead of typing them. Neither Quick Words nor voice typing had a confirmed ship date beyond "later in 2026" at the time of writing.

3. Pre-Roll Ads Are Coming: What They Look Like and Who Won't See Them

For creators, the biggest monetization change announced at RDC 2026 is pre-roll advertising. Roblox describes it as a new way for creators to earn: short, skippable, mobile-first video ads that play while a game is loading, with ad revenue shared back to the creator of the experience. Roblox confirmed one exemption up front — players subscribed to Roblox Plus, the platform's paid membership tier, will not see pre-roll ads. No launch date more specific than "coming soon" has been given yet.

It's a notable shift for a platform that has historically kept ads confined to in-experience billboards, portals and sponsored listings on the Discover page rather than full-screen video spots. Combined with the Roblox Wallet system Roblox also announced at RDC — which pays eligible creators out in real currency on a daily basis once it rolls out later this year — pre-roll ads give Roblox another direct line between player attention and creator income.

4. Turn-Based Notifications Pave the Way for Offline Play in 2027

Two more RDC 2026 announcements point toward more flexible play sessions. First, a new push-notification system for turn-based multiplayer games, arriving later in 2026, will alert opted-in players when it's their turn — useful for slower-paced, asynchronous games where someone might otherwise have to keep checking back manually. Second, and further out, Roblox confirmed that games will be able to support offline solo play alongside their normal multiplayer mode, with no internet connection required to launch, play or save progress. Roblox has targeted mid-2027 for that capability, so it's still well over a year away, but it's a meaningful break from Roblox's always-online design up to this point.

These sit alongside the broader "Play on Web" push Roblox detailed at the same conference, which lets anyone click a game's link in a YouTube description, X post or Discord message and start playing in a Chrome browser tab with no install required. 5. How These Updates Fit Into Roblox's 20th-Anniversary Push

All of this lands during Roblox's 20th-anniversary year. RDC 2026 ran September 10–12 in San Jose, California, where founder and CEO Dave Baszucki opened the conference by honoring late co-founder Erik Cassel, whose widow Rebecca Cassel joined him on stage. Roblox said players spent 29 billion hours on the platform in the previous quarter alone, across more than 180 countries — the scale that's driving the company to invest simultaneously in discovery (Moments shopping), communication (Chat and Quick Words), monetization (pre-roll ads and Wallet) and access (Play on Web, offline play).

The same event also showcased Roblox's AI-assisted creation tools, including the mobile Build app and a prompt-based Scene Generator — covered in full in our guide to Roblox's new Build, Scene Generator and 2D engine tools — and closed out with the 2026 Roblox Innovation Awards winners. Given that Moments and Chat both carry a minimum age of 16, it's also worth brushing up on how Roblox's age verification system works if you're unsure which features your account can currently access.
