NBA 2K27's The City Explained: Co-Ed Multiplayer, Crew HQ and Rucker Park
NBA 2K27's The City adds the franchise's first co-ed multiplayer, five randomized REC environments, and a recreated Holcombe Rucker Park in Street Kings. Here's how the new Crew HQ, Crew progression, REP system, and Player Medals all work, straight from 2K's official reveal.
NBA 2K27's City has been rebuilt around one big change: for the first time in franchise history, male and female MyPLAYERs can compete together in every City multiplayer mode. Around that co-ed foundation, Visual Concepts also reworked the REC's environments, moved Crew HQ into a dedicated building, and brought the legendary Holcombe Rucker Park into Street Kings. Here is exactly what changed and how each new system works, based on 2K's own newsroom reveal and the in-game feature pages.
1. The First Co-Ed City in Franchise History
NBA 2K27 introduces the series' first co-ed City, letting male and female MyPLAYERs compete side by side in every City multiplayer mode instead of being split into separate player pools. Every MyPLAYER uses the same underlying framework: height, wingspan, badges, and attributes are all determined by how a build is created, not by the character's appearance. That means a female MyPLAYER can be built to the same physical profile and badge loadout as a male one, and the two will play identically on the floor.
Female MyPLAYERs are City-only for now, but any game-enhancing reward earned in The City, including the MyPOINTS Accelerator, applies across all MyPLAYERs regardless of which one earned it.
2. The REC's Five Rotating Environments
The REC no longer locks players into a single arena look all season. Starting in NBA 2K27, five environments are chosen at random for each REC game: a High School Gym, an Outdoor Court, a Private Gym, a Crowded Arena, and a rotating Season-themed venue. The randomization means no two REC runs necessarily look the same, and the Crowded Arena in particular brings a packed, full-stadium atmosphere to what used to be a smaller 5-on-5 setting.
Other venues got moved, too
The REC isn't the only mode with a new backdrop. The Theater has moved to an outdoor city block, and Ante-Up now sits on a rooftop court with an infinity edge overlooking The City skyline. Seasonal Parks add four brand-new locations on top of HD remasters of classic parks pulled from 2K17. Street Kings also gets new locations, and its Triple Threat Park is a nighttime reimagining of Skyline Park, which was introduced in NBA 2K26.
3. Rucker Park Joins Street Kings
The most historically significant addition to Street Kings is Holcombe Rucker Park, recreated by Visual Concepts "in close detail" as one of three courts in the mode, alongside The Hollows and Claremont Court. Street Kings is a 3v3 mode where a player and up to two friends face off against CPU-controlled boss squads, with a Court Crashers mechanic that can drop a legendary boss player into the game to take over the court at a random point.
Street Kings also runs a weekly tournament structure: a seeding-based play-in stage leads into a best-of-five bracket, which narrows down to a single-elimination championship game played to 21.
4. Crew HQ: A Dedicated Home Base for Your Squad
Crews now have their own building in The City, separate from an individual player's personal MyCOURT. Crew HQ includes 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 half courts, plus full 3v3 and 5v5 courts, and it has built-in voice chat so a Crew can communicate without leaving the space. A Squad Showdown Kiosk inside Crew HQ lets Crews host private runs and organize their own league play outside of normal matchmaking.
Inside Crew HQ
Past the entrance, Crew HQ houses multiple practice courts side by side, so teammates can warm up shooting or run through sets before queuing into a real match. A dedicated screen inside the building tracks Crew-related information, giving a squad a single space to prep before stepping onto a Ranked Crew Game court.
5. Crew Progression and Ranked Crew Games
Crews compete through six Ranked Crew Game tiers, plus end-of-season divisional tournaments for the squads that climb highest. Crew progression itself launches with 40 levels in NBA 2K27, and starting in Season 2, five new levels will be added to that ladder every Season going forward, so the Crew level cap will keep rising as the year goes on.
Climbing the Crew ladder sits alongside your individual progress, so a Crew's standing and an individual MyPLAYER's own build and progression through MyCAREER move forward independently of one another.
6. REP System and Player Medals
The REP system carries 40 REP tiers in NBA 2K27, and 2K says players will earn double the REP rewards in the same amount of play time compared to last year. REP is separate from Season 1's Pro Pass rewards ladder, which tracks Season-specific unlocks rather than overall City progression.
Player Medals are a third progression layer, awarded for completing Lifetime Challenges or hitting specific stat milestones. NBA 2K27 ships with nearly 300 medals spread across five tiers, from Beginner up to Elite and Mastery, and they can be unlocked while playing across any game mode, not just in The City itself.
7. Why Visual Concepts Made These Changes
Erick Boenisch, VP of NBA Development at Visual Concepts, framed the overhaul around the mode's role as a gathering place for the community: "The City has long been the proving ground and social hub for the community," he said, adding, "In 2K27, we're elevating competition and connection across the mode." The co-ed update, the REC's rotating environments, and the move to give Crews their own dedicated HQ are all aimed at that same goal of making The City feel more connected rather than just bigger.
These changes apply across platforms, and cross-platform play between consoles and PC means Crews and REC lobbies can mix players regardless of which system they're on. Players who want the WNBA side of this progression should also check how it connects to The W and MyWNBA, since Player Medals and REP both track activity there as well.
Quick Tips Recap
- The City is now fully co-ed — a female and male MyPLAYER with the same build play identically, and rewards earned by either apply to all of a player's MyPLAYERs.
- REC games now roll one of five random environments, including the new Crowded Arena; the Theater and Ante-Up also moved to new outdoor locations.
- Rucker Park is a real, recreated court inside Street Kings' 3v3 mode, alongside The Hollows and Claremont Court.
- Crew HQ is a standalone building with practice courts, voice chat, and a Squad Showdown Kiosk for private league play.
- Crew progression starts at 40 levels and gains five more every Season starting in Season 2; REP has 40 tiers with double the earn rate of last year.
- Player Medals (nearly 300, across five tiers) and REP both count activity from any mode, not just The City.
