Minecraft Switch 2 Pre-Orders: Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate Editions Explained
Minecraft's native Nintendo Switch 2 version launches October 27, and pre-orders are now live with three digital editions to choose from. Here's how Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate compare, plus the free upgrade deal for existing digital Switch owners that expires at the end of January 2027.
Pre-orders for the native Minecraft version built for Nintendo Switch 2 are live, and Mojang has finally confirmed the details players have been waiting for: launch date, pricing for all three digital editions, and exactly how existing Switch owners can upgrade. The game arrives on October 27, built specifically to take advantage of the newer console's hardware and to finally bring Vibrant Visuals to a Nintendo system.
If you already own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch, there's a limited-time offer worth knowing about before you spend a cent. Here's everything confirmed so far, straight from Mojang and Nintendo's own listings.
1. When Minecraft Launches on Switch 2
Mojang opened pre-orders this week for the native Nintendo Switch 2 release of Minecraft, with the game set to launch on October 27, 2026. This isn't a simple patch to the existing Switch version — it's a separate, native build optimized for the Switch 2's hardware, which is what makes the headline feature possible: Vibrant Visuals support on a Nintendo console for the first time.
Worlds created on the original Nintendo Switch version carry over, so existing builds, Realms subscriptions, and Marketplace content aren't lost in the move.
2. The Three Digital Editions Compared
Nintendo's own storefront listing confirms pricing for all three digital tiers. Every edition includes the Super Mario™ Mash-Up Pack with Vibrant Visuals, so the differences come down to bonus add-ons, cosmetics, and Minecoins.
Standard Edition — $29.99
The base digital release. It includes the full game and the updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, but none of the extra add-on content bundled into the higher tiers.
Deluxe Collection — $39.99
- Three add-ons: Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, and Plenty O'Blocks
- Three exclusive Character Creator items
- 700 Minecoins
Ultimate Collection — $49.99
- Five add-ons: Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O'Blocks, plus Decocraft and Weapons & Tools
- Five exclusive Character Creator items
- 1,000 Minecoins
Mojang notes that any Minecoins included with — or purchased inside — Minecraft on a Nintendo device have to be spent within the Nintendo ecosystem, so they won't carry over if you also play on PC or console elsewhere.
3. The Free Digital Upgrade Path for Existing Switch Owners
If you already own a digital copy of Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch, Mojang is offering a limited-time deal: you can pre-order the digital Standard Edition for Switch 2 at no extra cost, but only until the end of January 2027. After that window closes, the offer goes away.
A few important catches:
- The free upgrade is available only through the Nintendo eShop — it isn't automatic, and you need to claim it before the deadline.
- It applies to the Standard Edition only. Players who want the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection can upgrade to those for a discounted fee instead of paying full price, though Mojang hasn't published the exact discounted figures yet.
- The offer covers most territories, but Japan and Taiwan are excluded — players there pay a small fee (100 JPY and 30 NTD respectively) instead of getting the upgrade completely free.
- Owners of a physical Switch cartridge are not currently covered by this offer. Mojang has not announced an upgrade path for physical copies.
4. Physical Edition and Retail Pre-Orders
For players who prefer a box on the shelf, the physical Nintendo Switch 2 version is also available to pre-order at retail. As with most third-party Switch 2 releases, it ships as a Game-Key Card — the cartridge acts as a license key rather than storing the full game, so you'll still need to download the game data after inserting it for the first time.
5. Vibrant Visuals: Why the Switch 2 Version Looks So Different
The headline reason this is a native build rather than a simple port is Vibrant Visuals, Minecraft's biggest graphics overhaul to date. It originally launched in June 2025 alongside the Chase the Skies update on more powerful platforms, and it's now coming to a Nintendo console for the first time — enabled by default on Switch 2.
Vibrant Visuals adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, moving shadows that track the sun across the sky, reflective water, and light that plays across lake beds and cave walls. It's a significant jump from the flat lighting the Bedrock Edition has used on Switch since launch.
There are limits worth knowing before you plan a co-op session: Vibrant Visuals is not available in split-screen play, and it's also disabled when playing certain Marketplace Worlds and content that wasn't built to support it. For a deeper look at how the feature first arrived and what it changes under the hood, our earlier breakdown of Vibrant Visuals on Switch 2 covers the technical side in more detail.
6. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Gets a Visual Overhaul
Every single edition of Minecraft for Switch 2 — Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate alike — includes the returning Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, now updated to take advantage of Vibrant Visuals. The Nintendo-exclusive pack transforms the Overworld into a Mushroom Kingdom-themed experience, with character skins and a custom texture pack pulled from the Super Mario series.
It's a nice reminder that Mojang's relationship with Nintendo's library goes beyond this one release — Mojang's dungeon-crawler spin-off, Minecraft Dungeons II, also launched on Switch and Switch 2 just weeks before this pre-order news, and both games now share the same console lineup.
7. Should You Pre-Order Now?
The decision mostly comes down to what you already own:
- You own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch: claim the free Standard Edition upgrade through the Nintendo eShop before the end of January 2027 — there's no reason to pay for it twice inside that window.
- You're new to Minecraft on Nintendo hardware: decide between Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate based on whether the bundled add-ons and Minecoins are worth the extra $10–$20 to you.
- You want a physical copy: remember it's a Game-Key Card, so budget time for an initial download before you can play on day one.
Whichever edition you pick, the version itself is identical — Deluxe and Ultimate are purely about bonus content, not extra performance or features. If you're coming back to the game fresh for this release, it's also worth catching up on what's new in the base game itself, including the biomes and building blocks added in the recent Wilderness Bound game drop.
