Quick Summary

Minecraft launches natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, with Vibrant Visuals as the default graphics setting, an upgraded Super Mario Mash-Up pack, and a digital upgrade path for existing Switch owners. Here's everything Mojang and Nintendo have confirmed so far.

Minecraft is finally getting a proper, native Nintendo Switch 2 release. Mojang and Nintendo have confirmed the game launches on the new console on October 27, built around Vibrant Visuals — the graphics overhaul that's been rolling out across Bedrock Edition — plus an upgraded Super Mario Mash-Up pack exclusive to Nintendo platforms. Here's everything that's been officially confirmed so far, and what it actually changes if you're playing on Switch 2.

1. When Minecraft Arrives on Nintendo Switch 2

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 27, according to Mojang's official announcement. The release is a native build rather than a backwards-compatible port of the existing Switch version, meaning it's built to take advantage of the new hardware directly rather than just running the old game through compatibility.

Players who already own Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch will have access to a digital upgrade path to move to the Switch 2 version, and existing Switch worlds can be transferred across. Mojang hasn't published final pricing or eligibility details for the upgrade yet.

2. What Vibrant Visuals Actually Changes

The headline feature is that Vibrant Visuals will be the default visual setting on Switch 2, rather than an opt-in toggle buried in a menu. Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's modern graphics pipeline for Bedrock Edition, first shown at Minecraft Live and already available on Xbox, PlayStation, mobile and Windows.

It's a purely cosmetic overhaul — none of it touches game mechanics, light-level mob spawning, or redstone — but it changes the feel of the game substantially:

  • Directional lighting that casts real shadows and lets sunlight stream through windows and foliage
  • Volumetric fog in caves, canyons and at dawn/dusk
  • Reflective, shimmering water that mirrors the sky and nearby terrain
  • Richer ambient occlusion around blocks, giving builds more depth and texture

Mojang confirms that any Minecraft Marketplace content built to support Vibrant Visuals — worlds, texture packs, add-ons — will automatically benefit from the upgrade on Switch 2 as well, so it isn't limited to vanilla terrain.

Where it looks the most different

Biomes with water, dense foliage or strong lighting contrast show the change most clearly. Mesa canyons pick up warm, hazy sunlight and reflective rivers; jungle biomes get volumetric light shafts filtering through the canopy.

3. How Vibrant Visuals Got Here

Vibrant Visuals isn't a Switch 2-exclusive feature — it's the result of a longer rendering overhaul Mojang has been rolling out across Bedrock Edition since it was first revealed at Minecraft Live in March 2025. The feature launched on Bedrock Edition in mid-2025 and has since made its way to Xbox, PlayStation, Windows and mobile, with Mojang reworking the rendering pipeline on each platform to handle the extra lighting and reflection calculations without wrecking performance.

Switch 2 is effectively the last major platform to receive it, and the first time it's been positioned as the default look rather than something players have to dig into settings to enable. That's a meaningful signal about how confident Mojang is in Switch 2's hardware compared to the original Switch, which never supported Vibrant Visuals at all.

4. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Gets a Glow-Up

Nintendo's exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up pack — which reskins Minecraft with Mario-themed blocks, music and character skins — is being updated specifically to show off Vibrant Visuals. The pack includes a custom Mario-themed world built around recreations of locations like Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza, now rendered with the new lighting and water effects.

The Mash-Up pack has been a Nintendo-only feature since the original Switch release, and this update keeps that exclusivity rather than bringing it to other platforms.

5. Upgrading From the Original Switch Version

If you already own Minecraft on the original Switch, Mojang has confirmed a digital upgrade path will be available, and your existing worlds can be carried over to the Switch 2 release rather than starting from scratch. Mojang hasn't confirmed whether the upgrade will be free, discounted, or a standard paid purchase — that detail is still pending.

If you're setting up multiplayer worlds ahead of the move, it's worth brushing up on how invites work — our guide to creating and managing Minecraft Realms invite codes covers that in more depth.

6. What Vibrant Visuals Won't Do on Switch 2

A few limits are worth knowing before launch. Vibrant Visuals is disabled during split-screen play on Switch 2, since rendering the enhanced lighting and reflections twice at once is too demanding. It also isn't guaranteed to apply inside every Marketplace world — content has to be built to support the new rendering pipeline to take full advantage of it.

It's also strictly cosmetic: shadows cast by Vibrant Visuals don't change actual light levels for mob spawning, so switching it on or off won't make your base more or less safe at night.

Common questions going into launch

  • Is this a separate purchase from the Switch version? Mojang has confirmed a digital upgrade path exists for existing Switch owners, but hasn't published final pricing.
  • Will my current Switch worlds carry over? Yes — Mojang has confirmed world transfers from the original Switch version to Switch 2.
  • Does the Switch 2 version include The Sift or other unreleased content? No. The Sift dimension is confirmed for 2027 and isn't part of this release.
  • Can I turn Vibrant Visuals off if I prefer the classic look? Mojang hasn't said the option is being removed, only that it ships enabled by default — Vibrant Visuals has remained a toggle on every other platform it's launched on.

7. Where This Fits Into Minecraft's Busy 2026

The Switch 2 release lands in the middle of an unusually active stretch for Minecraft. The Wilderness Bound update has been rolling out new biome content this season, Minecraft Dungeons II launched in late September on Switch and Switch 2 alongside Xbox, and Mojang used Minecraft Live to confirm The Sift — the game's first new dimension in over a decade — is coming in 2027. The Switch 2 version doesn't ship with any of that new dimension content yet, but it puts Nintendo's newest hardware on equal footing with Xbox and PlayStation for everything Mojang ships next.

8. Quick Tips Before You Upgrade

  • Mark October 27 down — that's the confirmed native Switch 2 launch date
  • Check whether your existing Switch worlds are backed up before attempting a transfer
  • Don't expect Vibrant Visuals in split-screen sessions — it's disabled there
  • If you're chasing the best-looking biomes, head to cherry groves, mesas or jungles first — that's where the lighting and reflection changes are most dramatic
  • Final upgrade pricing for existing Switch owners hasn't been confirmed yet, so hold off on assumptions until Mojang publishes it
