Quick Summary

Minecraft launches natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026, with three editions starting at $29.99 and a free Standard Edition upgrade for existing digital Switch owners through January 2027. Here's every confirmed price, date and detail from Mojang and Nintendo.

Minecraft is getting a native Nintendo Switch 2 version on October 27, 2026, and Mojang Studios has now confirmed exactly what it costs, what's included, and who qualifies for a free upgrade. Pre-orders opened on October 7 through the Nintendo eShop, with full details also posted on Nintendo's own site. Here's everything that's actually been confirmed, straight from Mojang and Nintendo.

1. When Minecraft Launches on Nintendo Switch 2

Mojang announced the release window back in August, and locked in the date on October 7: Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 arrives October 27, 2026. This is a native build made specifically for the new hardware rather than the existing Switch version running through backward compatibility, and it includes a digital release on the eShop alongside a physical, boxed version available to pre-order at retail now.

Players who already own Minecraft on the original Switch can carry their worlds over to the new version, so existing builds, maps and Realms saves aren't left behind in the move.

2. Three Editions, Three Price Points

Nintendo's own store listing confirms three digital editions, all built around the same base game:

  • Standard Edition — $29.99. Includes the base game plus the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with Vibrant Visuals.
  • Deluxe Collection — $39.99. Adds the Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O'Blocks add-on packs, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • Ultimate Collection — $49.99. Adds everything in Deluxe plus the Decocraft and Weapons + Tools add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1,000 Minecoins.

In Europe, the Standard Edition lists at €29.99 on the eShop. Nintendo notes that any Minecoins bought on a Nintendo device are tied to the Nintendo ecosystem, so they won't carry over if you later buy the game on another platform.

3. The Free Upgrade for Existing Switch Owners

This is the detail most existing players will care about. Mojang and Nintendo both confirm that owners of the digital Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft can pre-order the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free, with the offer running until the end of January 2027. It's described as a limited-time offer available only through the Nintendo eShop.

  • The free upgrade covers the Standard Edition only. Owners who want the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection can upgrade to either at a discounted price rather than paying full price.
  • The offer applies in most territories, but Japan and Taiwan are handled separately: digital owners there pay a small nominal fee (100 JPY in Japan, 30 NTD in Taiwan) instead of getting it for free.
  • Neither Mojang nor Nintendo has announced an equivalent upgrade path for players who bought a physical Minecraft Switch cartridge — as of publication, that group isn't covered by the free offer.

If you own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch and want the free Standard Edition, the safest move is to claim it through the eShop before the January 31, 2027 cutoff, since Mojang hasn't said whether it will be extended.

Nintendo's listing frames the offer specifically as a pre-order, not a post-launch redemption: eligible players claim it on the eShop ahead of October 27, and the Switch 2 copy becomes playable once the game launches. There's no separate code or voucher process described — the eShop checks your existing digital Switch ownership and applies the discount automatically at checkout.

4. Vibrant Visuals: What Actually Changes

Every edition of Minecraft on Switch 2 ships with Vibrant Visuals switched on by default — the graphics overhaul Mojang first revealed at Minecraft LIVE and has been rolling out across platforms since. It adds directional lighting, volumetric fog and shafts of light through foliage, dynamic water reflections, and softer, more natural shadows, without changing any of the underlying gameplay, blocks or mechanics.

Mojang's own documentation flags two exceptions worth knowing before launch day: Vibrant Visuals isn't available in split-screen local multiplayer, and it doesn't apply to some Marketplace Worlds and Marketplace content that weren't built to support it. If you're planning a couch co-op session, expect the classic lighting model in split-screen rather than the enhanced visuals you see in trailers and screenshots.

5. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack

The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is a Nintendo-exclusive content pack that's included free with every edition — Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate. It swaps in a Mushroom Kingdom-themed world, Mario-inspired music tracks, and a set of character skins pulled from across the Mario series, and it's been updated specifically to take advantage of Vibrant Visuals' lighting on Switch 2. It's the same pack Switch 1 owners have had access to since the original 2017 Switch launch, rebuilt to look better on the new hardware.

6. The Physical Release and What's Still Unconfirmed

Alongside the three digital editions, Nintendo is also selling a physical Nintendo Switch 2 release at retail, available to pre-order now for $29.99. Neither Mojang's nor Nintendo's announcement specifies exactly what's bundled with the physical version beyond the base game, so treat any retailer listing describing extra contents as unconfirmed until Mojang says otherwise.

A few things Mojang and Nintendo haven't locked down yet, as of this article:

  • The exact discounted prices for upgrading a free Standard Edition claim to Deluxe or Ultimate.
  • Whether physical Switch cartridge owners will ever get an upgrade offer.
  • Full system requirements or performance targets (resolution, frame rate) for the Switch 2 version.
  • Exactly what, if anything, separates the physical retail release from buying the Standard Edition digitally.

None of this changes the core facts that matter for a pre-order decision — the date, the three price points, and who qualifies for the free upgrade are all locked in and confirmed directly by Mojang and Nintendo. The remaining gaps are secondary details Mojang will likely fill in closer to launch.

If you've been following the game's broader 2026 roadmap, this release lands not long after the Wilderness Bound Game Drop added its new biome and Abandoned Camp structure, and alongside continued promotion of Minecraft Dungeons II, which is also heading to Switch and Switch 2 this fall. Mojang covered both at length during Minecraft Live 2026, where the Sift dimension and several other reveals were shown off.

7. Quick Tips Before You Pre-Order

  • Check which Switch version you own first. The free upgrade only applies to the digital version of Minecraft on the original Switch — physical cartridge owners currently don't qualify.
  • Claim before January 31, 2027 if you're eligible for the free Standard Edition; the offer is explicitly limited-time.
  • Decide on Deluxe or Ultimate early if you want the extra add-on packs and Minecoins, since upgrading from a claimed free copy costs less than buying Deluxe or Ultimate outright.
  • Expect classic lighting in split-screen. Don't be surprised if local co-op doesn't look like the Vibrant Visuals screenshots — that mode isn't supported yet.
  • Worlds carry over from the original Switch version, so there's no need to rebuild existing bases before upgrading.
