Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2: Release Date, Price and Free Upgrade Explained
Minecraft launches natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026. Here's Mojang's official pricing for the Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions, how the free digital upgrade for existing Switch owners works, and what the new Vibrant Visuals graphics mode changes.
Minecraft is getting its own native build for Nintendo Switch 2, and Mojang has now confirmed the exact date, the pricing for all three editions, and how existing Nintendo Switch owners can upgrade. Here is everything that's officially confirmed so far, straight from Mojang and Nintendo's own announcements.
If you already own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch, the short version is good news: you likely qualify for a free upgrade. If you're buying it fresh, here's exactly what each edition includes and what it costs.
1. Release Date: When Minecraft Launches on Switch 2
Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 27, 2026. Mojang first confirmed a native Switch 2 version back in June 2026, then followed up on October 7 with the full pricing, pre-order details, and digital upgrade terms via an official post on minecraft.net.
Both a digital version and a physical, retail version are available to pre-order ahead of launch. This is a dedicated native build tuned for Switch 2's hardware, not simply the existing Switch version running through backward compatibility. Pre-orders opened on October 7, giving players roughly three weeks to decide which edition to buy, or to confirm whether they qualify for the free upgrade covered below, before the console release window.
It's also worth remembering that Minecraft already runs on the original Nintendo Switch via backward compatibility on Switch 2 hardware, so nobody loses access on launch day. What changes is that the native build specifically targets the newer hardware, which is what unlocks the Vibrant Visuals graphics mode described in the next section.
2. Who Actually Needs the Native Switch 2 Version?
If you're a longtime Minecraft player who already owns the game digitally on the original Switch, the native Switch 2 release is primarily about visuals and performance rather than new content — your worlds, Realms subscriptions, and Marketplace purchases are not being reset or re-sold to you. The free upgrade path exists precisely so existing owners aren't asked to pay twice for the same game. New players, or anyone picking up a Switch 2 for the first time, are the audience the Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate pre-order tiers below are built for.
3. Pricing: Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate Collections Compared
Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 is sold in three digital tiers, confirmed at these regular prices on the US Nintendo eShop:
- Standard Edition — $29.99
- Deluxe Collection — $39.99
- Ultimate Collection — $49.99
Every edition, including Standard, comes with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack updated for Vibrant Visuals (more on that below). The two higher tiers add extra content on top:
Deluxe Collection adds:
- Three add-on packs: Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, and Plenty O'Blocks
- Three exclusive Character Creator items
- 700 Minecoins
Ultimate Collection adds:
- Five add-on packs: Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O'Blocks, Decocraft, and Weapons & Tools
- Five exclusive Character Creator items
- 1,000 Minecoins
A physical cartridge version is also available to pre-order at retail for players who prefer a boxed copy over the digital storefront.
4. Vibrant Visuals: The Headline Graphics Upgrade
The biggest reason this is being treated as a proper new release rather than a simple port is Vibrant Visuals, Minecraft's modern lighting overhaul, which ships as the default graphics setting on Switch 2. According to Mojang, it adds enhanced lighting, improved shadow effects, and more detailed rendering across supported Minecraft Marketplace content.
There is one notable limitation worth knowing before launch: Mojang's own announcement states that Vibrant Visuals is not available in some gameplay situations, specifically split-screen play and certain Marketplace worlds and content. If you regularly play local co-op on one console, expect the game to fall back to standard visuals in that mode.
5. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Gets a Vibrant Visuals Update
The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack — exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft since its original release — is also being updated to take advantage of Vibrant Visuals. The pack reskins Minecraft with a custom Mushroom Kingdom-themed world, music, and character skins, letting players explore recreations of locations like Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza built out of blocks. Every edition of Minecraft for Switch 2, including the base Standard Edition, includes this pack at no extra cost.
6. Free Digital Upgrade Path for Existing Switch Owners
If you already own a digital copy of Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch, Mojang is offering a free upgrade path to the Switch 2 Standard Edition. The key details, straight from Mojang's official post:
- The free upgrade is available through the Nintendo eShop only, and only to accounts that already own the digital Switch version.
- It covers most territories, with exceptions: in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, the upgrade carries a small fee (100 JPY, 30 NTD, and 25 THB respectively) rather than being free.
- Owners can also choose to pay a discounted fee to step up to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection instead of the free Standard upgrade.
- This is explicitly described as a limited-time offer, available to claim until the end of January 2027.
Mojang has not published exact pricing for the discounted Deluxe/Ultimate upgrade step, so budget for the full $39.99 or $49.99 price if you want certainty, and treat any lower upgrade price as a pleasant surprise at checkout.
7. What Hasn't Been Confirmed Yet
A few details players are asking about are genuinely still open, and it's worth not trusting any article that claims otherwise:
- Physical cartridge owners: Mojang has not announced an upgrade path for players who own Minecraft on a physical Switch cartridge rather than digitally.
- Joy-Con 2 mouse controls: Nintendo's newer Joy-Con 2 controllers support a mouse-like control mode on supported games, but Mojang hasn't said whether Minecraft will use it.
- World transfer specifics: General cloud save and Nintendo Switch Online mechanics should carry worlds over for most players, but Mojang's posts don't spell out a dedicated transfer tool.
If any of these get confirmed closer to launch, treat anything you read before October 27 as provisional until it comes from minecraft.net or Nintendo directly.
