Genshin Impact Artifact System Explained: Main Stats, Set Bonuses and Farming Tips

Quick Summary

Artifacts are the single biggest multiplier on a character's damage, survivability and utility in Genshin Impact, yet the system trips up even experienced players. Here's how the five artifact slots, main stats, substats and set bonuses actually work, plus where to farm them efficiently.

Artifacts are the single biggest lever a player pulls when building a character in Genshin Impact. Two players can run the exact same character, weapon and talent levels and still get wildly different results in combat purely because of how their artifacts are rolled. Unlike weapons or talents, artifacts are semi-random, which is exactly why so many new (and not-so-new) Travelers find the system confusing. Here's how the five artifact slots, main stats, substats and set bonuses actually work, and where to farm them without wasting Resin.

1. What Artifacts Do and Why They're Worth the Effort

Every playable character in Teyvat can equip five artifacts at once, one in each of five fixed slots: Flower of Life, Plume of Death, Sands of Eon, Goblet of Eonothem and Circlet of Logos. Together these five pieces can add more raw stat value to a character than their weapon and talent levels combined, which is why endgame content like the Spiral Abyss and the Imaginarium Theater is really a test of artifact optimization as much as it is a test of team composition.

Artifacts come in rarities from 1-star to 5-star. Only 4-star and 5-star artifacts are worth planning around in the long run, since lower rarities cap out at much lower levels and weaker stat rolls. A 5-star artifact can be upgraded all the way to +20, while a 4-star caps at +16 — every four levels, it gains or upgrades a substat, which is the part of the system that actually separates a great piece from a mediocre one.

2. The Five Artifact Slots and Their Main Stats

Each slot has rules about what main stat it can roll:

  • Flower of Life: always flat HP. No exceptions, no choice involved.
  • Plume of Death: always flat ATK. Also fixed.
  • Sands of Eon: variable — HP%, ATK%, DEF%, Elemental Mastery or Energy Recharge.
  • Goblet of Eonothem: variable — HP%, ATK%, DEF%, Elemental Mastery, an Elemental DMG Bonus (Pyro/Hydro/Electro/Cryo/Anemo/Geo/Dendro) or Physical DMG Bonus.
  • Circlet of Logos: variable — HP%, ATK%, DEF%, Elemental Mastery, CRIT Rate, CRIT DMG or Healing Bonus.

Because Sands, Goblet and Circlet can roll from a pool of options, these are the three pieces that make artifact farming a grind: a Goblet with the wrong elemental damage bonus, or a Circlet with Healing Bonus on a DPS character, is functionally useless no matter how good its substats are.

3. Substats and the Upgrade Ladder

Alongside its main stat, every artifact can carry up to four substats, drawn from a pool that includes flat HP/ATK/DEF, HP%/ATK%/DEF%, Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge, CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG. A freshly obtained 5-star artifact starts with between zero and four of these substats already rolled; as it levels up every four levels, it either unlocks a new substat slot or adds another roll to an existing one, until all four are filled and it simply upgrades those four for the rest of its leveling.

This randomness is why two characters with identical gear can perform so differently — a Circlet that main-stats CRIT Rate and then also substats into CRIT DMG, ATK% and Energy Recharge is a very different piece from one that substats into Elemental Mastery, HP%, DEF% and flat HP, even though both are technically "5-star, max level, correct main stat."

4. Set Bonuses: 2-Piece and 4-Piece Effects

Artifacts also belong to themed sets, and wearing multiple pieces from the same set unlocks bonus effects on top of their individual stats. Equipping two pieces from a set grants a smaller bonus, and equipping all four pieces from the same set (ignoring the Flower and Plume split if you mix two different 2-piece sets) grants a stronger, often build-defining effect. A few long-standing examples:

  • Noblesse Oblige: 2-piece grants +20% Elemental Burst DMG; 4-piece increases the whole party's ATK for a short time after using an Elemental Burst, making it a staple on burst-support characters.
  • Viridescent Venerer: 2-piece grants +15% Anemo DMG; 4-piece reduces enemy elemental resistance after a Swirl reaction, which is why it's been a core piece of Anemo support kits since the game's early patches.
  • Gladiator's Finale: 2-piece grants +18% ATK; 4-piece boosts normal attack damage for characters who wield a sword, claymore or polearm as their main damage dealer.

Many players mix two different 2-piece sets (for example 2-piece ATK% plus 2-piece Elemental DMG Bonus) when they can't find a complete, well-rolled 4-piece set, which is a perfectly viable way to get a build online while still farming toward something better.

5. Where to Farm Artifacts

Artifacts mainly come from Domains scattered across Teyvat's seven nations, each one tied to a specific set or pair of sets. Domains cost Original Resin (or Condensed/Fragile Resin, which refund some of the cost) to enter, and each run drops a handful of artifacts from that domain's pool, with higher World Levels unlocking better average rarity. Artifacts also drop, less reliably, from certain world bosses and weekly bosses, and the Artifact Strongbox lets players trade a stack of 4-star artifacts of one type for a chance at a specific set piece of their choosing — useful for filling out a Flower or Plume slot without relying purely on domain RNG.

Because Resin is the hard limiter on how much a player can farm in a day, efficient artifact farming comes down to picking the right domain for the right character rather than clearing everything available. A Sands, Goblet and Circlet of the correct main stat is worth prioritizing over a complete but wrongly-rolled 4-piece set.

6. A Few Practical Tips

  • Don't fully level every artifact you pick up. Level a piece to +4 or +8 first to check whether its substats are worth investing further Mora and EXP materials into.
  • Prioritize CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG substats on damage dealers; a rough 1:2 ratio between the two is a common target before chasing anything else.
  • Use the in-game Artifact "Strengthen" filter and comparison view before committing materials, since it shows the exact stat gain for each level-up in advance.
  • Don't feel pressured to chase a perfect 4-piece set immediately. A 2-piece ATK% plus 2-piece Elemental DMG combination is a legitimate long-term build for plenty of characters, not just a placeholder.

7. Why the System Has Stuck Around This Long

Genshin Impact has kept this same core artifact structure since its 2020 launch, through every new region, Archon Quest and the arrival of new elements and mechanics introduced in the current 7.1 update, "A Rekviem for the Underworld". That consistency is part of why the game has remained one of HoYoverse's flagship titles and a repeat award winner, including a PlayStation Partner Awards Grand Award.

Artifacts interact with nearly every other system in the game, from stacking elemental reactions like Vaporize and Melt to the characters a player ultimately chases through the wish and pity system. Understanding it early saves a lot of wasted Mora and Resin later on.

Quick Recap

  • Five slots: Flower and Plume are fixed stats; Sands, Goblet and Circlet are variable, so check the main stat before farming.
  • Substats unlock or upgrade every four artifact levels, up to four total.
  • Set bonuses reward full 4-piece sets, but mixing two 2-piece sets is a valid interim (or even permanent) strategy.
  • Farm Domains matched to the character you're building, not just whatever is available that day.
  • Level artifacts gradually and check substats before fully committing resources.
