Quick Summary

Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, and The Coalition has already shipped a day-one patch and detailed Season 1 "Emergence," an eight-week roadmap with three themed events, a October 13 Ranked launch, and five seasons of content already planned.

Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC on Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass, and the first week has already brought a day-one stability patch and the official rollout of Season 1, nicknamed "Emergence." Here's everything confirmed so far about what's live right now, what's coming over the season's eight weeks, and what The Coalition says is still missing.

This prequel sends Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago back to the first hours of the Locust Horde's attack on Sera, and the studio has been unusually specific about what launches in the box versus what arrives later. The picture below is built entirely from The Coalition's and Xbox's own posts on gearsofwar.com and news.xbox.com published in the days around launch.

1. Launch Status: What's Live Right Now

Gears of War: E-Day is out now on Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and the Xbox app), with day-one availability on Game Pass and full Xbox Play Anywhere support, so a single purchase covers console and PC. The storefront price is $69.99. Campaign and multiplayer both run up to 4K resolution and up to 60 FPS depending on display, and two-player split-screen co-op is available on console only. Online multiplayer requires a Game Pass tier that includes online play, sold separately from the base game.

Premium Edition owners got early access starting October 1, with weekly challenges arriving for everyone at the global launch on October 6. Offline play was not available until the October 6 release.

2. The Day-One Patch: What The Coalition Fixed on October 5

Ahead of the global release, The Coalition shipped an update on October 5 covering stability, performance and hardware compatibility improvements, plus a list of specific fixes:

  • Online and multiplayer: fixed Versus Social matches getting stuck on the "Waiting for players" screen, improved Xbox authentication when a system clock is significantly off, and fixed a split-screen sign-out bug nicknamed the "Bilefrog-Kalona" error.
  • Campaign: joining players no longer inherit War Journal progress or Forge rewards earned before they joined; players no longer stay attached to turrets when a cinematic begins; fixed an objective in Act 2 Chapter 2's Allfather's Plaza that could fail to update, and a Heavy Gear missing its Vulcan in the Black Raven Down side objective; fixed Act 4 Chapter 1 side objectives failing to start if entered during intro dialogue, and a Power Station defense objective in Act 4 Chapter 2 that could fail to complete.
  • Horde Siege: fixed Siege Blitz Secure objectives that couldn't be completed, and an extraction helicopter that could fail to appear in the Plaza Ruins Blitz mission.
  • Versus: fixed a Demolition bomb getting stuck in a defusing state if the defusing player was eliminated.

Players can send support requests to aka.ms/GearsSupport for anything not covered by this patch.

3. Season 1 "Emergence": The Eight-Week Roadmap

Season 1 runs for eight weeks, through December 1, and includes all of the game's launch maps, modes and cosmetics. Layered on top of that base content are three two-week themed events: Halloween, 20 Years of Gears, and Thanksgibbing. Each event adds its own Versus Event mode, a Horde Siege Event mission, and exclusive rewards for the duration.

The in-game shop rotates every Tuesday for the length of the season, giving a steady cadence of new cosmetic offers alongside the event content.

4. Versus Ranked and Weekly Challenges

Versus is a 4v4 PvP mode split into Ranked and Social playlists, built around modes including Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition and Crucible. Versus Ranked specifically launches on October 13, one week after the global release, and weekly challenges also refresh that same day. Horde Siege, the game's PvE mode, supports a 4-player squad choosing from four classes: Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher.

5. Horde Siege: Squad Survival Against the Locust

Horde Siege pits a four-player squad against escalating waves of Locust, including heavily armored boss-tier enemies. The Coalition's own screenshots show squads fending off a chained, oversized Locust brute in the game's Kalona streets, and holding a defensive line against a Corpser-type enemy in an open plaza — both drawn directly from the mode's official reveal material.

6. The Never Fight Alone Bundle and Legacy Rewards

Alongside Season 1, The Coalition launched the Never Fight Alone Year 5 bundle, which sends 100% of its net revenue to Crisis Text Line. Separately, players who own Gears of War: Reloaded can unlock legacy rewards in E-Day tied to specific achievements: completing "Prison Breakout" unlocks the Fire and Fenix pose, and completing "Re-Up" unlocks the Old Guard Medal and the "Locked n' Reloaded" title.

7. What's Missing at Launch

The Coalition has been upfront that some legacy Gears features did not make it into the October 6 launch build, including Meat Shields, Chainsaw Duels, Private Lobbies, and leaderboards. No date has been given for when, or whether, any of these return — worth knowing before you go looking for them in the menus.

8. Looking Ahead: Season 2 "Legacy" and Beyond

Season 2 is already named and themed: "Legacy," tied to the Gears of War franchise's 20th anniversary, with a birthday gift arriving November 7. The returning Dead Serious achievement debuts at the start of Season 2 and rewards a Medal, Player Title, Banner, Emblem, Icon and a Legendary Character skin. The Coalition has also named three further seasons beyond that — Season 3 ("Infiltration"), Season 4 ("Pendulum") and Season 5 ("Devotion") — confirming at least five post-launch seasons of content are already planned.

9. Quick Tips for Your First Night in Kalona

Xbox's own launch-week guide lays out a few concrete tips worth knowing before jumping into the campaign:

  • Fights are cover-based — move cover to cover and avoid open ground unless you're closing in for a melee takedown; a handful of Drones can deal massive damage while you're exposed.
  • Against a Brumak, spread out and keep it distracted rather than relying on cover alone.
  • Blind firing from cover works when you don't have the health for melee or just need a few seconds to recover.
  • The Chainsaw Lancer is a strong all-rounder with an upgradeable magazine, the Gnasher excels at point-blank range, and the Longshot Sniper can whittle down tankier enemies like a Boomer before they close the distance.
  • Caches scattered around Kalona let you swap your loadout mid-mission.
  • A chime plays on entering a new area when a nearby collectible — COG armor, tags or lore items — is worth tracking down, and optional side missions supporting other squads or civilians typically reward a weapon mod.
