Quick Summary

Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School, Coin Crew Games' open-world sequel to its hit co-op puzzle game, is now confirmed for a November 2026 launch on PC and Xbox after a delay from September. Here's everything officially confirmed so far, from the new campus hub to day-one Xbox Game Pass access.

Coin Crew Games and publisher iam8bit have confirmed that Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School, the sequel to their acclaimed co-op puzzle game, is now targeting a November 2026 release on PC and Xbox after being pushed back from its original September window. If you're wondering what changed since the original Escape Academy, what the new open-world campus actually looks like, or whether it's coming to Game Pass, here is everything officially confirmed so far.

1. What Is Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School?

Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is the sequel to 2022's Escape Academy, a first-person puzzle game in which players attend a "school" for professional escape artists and work through a series of hand-built escape rooms. The original was developed by Coin Crew Games and published by iam8bit and Skybound Games, and according to its official Steam listing it has been played by over four million people since launch.

The sequel keeps the same developer and publisher pairing, but according to its own store description it changes the underlying format: rather than moving between separate, self-contained rooms from a hub menu, the whole Academy campus is now one connected, explorable space.

2. Release Date, Platforms and Xbox Game Pass

Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School's Steam page currently lists a November 2026 release window, with no exact day announced yet. The game had originally been planned for a September 2026 release, but iam8bit and Coin Crew Games delayed it to November to give the team more time to polish the campus and its rooms before launch.

At launch, the game is confirmed for:

  • PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Xbox Game Pass as a day-one release

The original Escape Academy is available now on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, so a wider console rollout for the sequel beyond Xbox and PC hasn't been ruled out, but it also hasn't been officially confirmed — treat any console other than Xbox as unconfirmed for now.

3. Watch the Official Trailer

iam8bit and Coin Crew Games showed off the sequel during the ID@Xbox Showcase, and the official ID@XBOX channel later published a dedicated Xbox Game Pass announcement trailer confirming the day-one release plan. It's embedded below.

4. Exploring the Open-World Campus

The biggest structural change in Back 2 School is the campus itself. Instead of picking rooms from a menu, Escape Academy 2 places players directly on Academy grounds — a sprawling space with a lighthouse, a clock tower, hedge gardens and cliffside buildings, all connected by paths, hidden tunnels and secret passageways. According to the game's own store description, the campus is designed to be a puzzle in itself: between classes, players can explore for hidden secrets or just take in the scenery with friends before heading into the next escape room.

That framing is also why iam8bit and Coin Crew Games have described Back 2 School as the first open-world escape room game — the puzzle rooms are still hand-built and self-contained once you're inside them, but getting to them, and discovering what else is hidden around campus, is now part of the game rather than a menu screen.

5. New Escape Rooms and Puzzle Design

Inside the rooms themselves, the sequel is sticking with what made the original work: escape rooms designed by people with real-life escape room design experience, built around lateral thinking rather than pure reflexes. Official screenshots show rooms themed around classroom pop quizzes, complete with a chalkboard riddle and a paper-airplane-covered ceiling, as well as more elaborate multi-part rooms that combine mechanical puzzles, target ranges and locked cages into a single space.

6. Solo and Co-op Play

Like the original, Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School supports both solo play and two-player co-op, with online co-op and split-screen couch co-op both confirmed on its Steam listing. An optional No-Timer Mode is also confirmed, aimed at players who'd rather work through puzzles at their own pace instead of racing a clock.

Co-op was central to what made the first Escape Academy click with a lot of players — puzzles were frequently split across two connected spaces, so communication between partners mattered as much as solving the puzzle itself. Official screenshots of the original show exactly that kind of split-screen setup, with one player working a filing cabinet while their partner searches a briefcase across the room for the clue that unlocks it.

7. What Made the Original Escape Academy Work

It's worth understanding the original before the sequel arrives, since Back 2 School is explicitly building on it rather than starting from scratch. The 2022 Escape Academy shipped with over a dozen hand-crafted rooms, later expanded with two paid DLC packs — Escape from Anti-Escape Island and Escape from the Past — that added five new rooms each, plus a free PvP-focused update called Tournament of Puzzles. Music and sound design came from doseone, known for work on Gang Beasts and Enter the Gungeon.

Visually, the original leaned into a moody, storybook art style — ornate staircases, stained-glass windows shaped like keyholes, firelit trophy rooms — that gave even small puzzle rooms a strong sense of place rather than feeling like generic test chambers.

8. Quick Tips for New and Returning Escapists

Escape Academy 2 hasn't launched yet, so there's no way to give room-specific solutions, but the confirmed design of both games points to a few habits worth carrying in:

  • Talk to your partner constantly in co-op. Both games regularly split clues and mechanisms across two areas that only one player can see at a time.
  • Use the campus itself as a clue source. With Back 2 School moving to an open hub, expect environmental details outside the rooms — posters, bulletin boards, background objects — to matter more than they did in the original's menu-based structure.
  • Try No-Timer Mode first if you're new to escape rooms. It lets you learn how the game communicates its puzzles without the pressure of a countdown.
  • Don't skip the DLC if you finish the original. Escape from Anti-Escape Island and Escape from the Past add ten more rooms between them and are good practice before the sequel arrives.

If you're newer to the genre overall, browsing a mix of styles helps — series like the Adventure Escape Mysteries series lean more toward narrative mystery-solving than the physical, mechanism-driven rooms Coin Crew Games builds, and comparing the two is a good way to figure out which puzzle style you actually prefer.
