Quick Summary

EA Sports FC 27's Ultimate Team Evolutions now offer branching Pathways instead of one fixed upgrade route, and EA is handing out a free David Luiz Pathway Evolution to FC 27 Club Members. Here's how Evolutions, Squad Battles, SBCs and Chemistry fit together.

Evolutions are the main way EA Sports FC 27 lets you turn a player you already own into something better, and this season EA has started rolling out branching Pathways that let you choose how a card develops instead of following one fixed route. If you've opened Ultimate Team and seen a "View Available Evolutions" option on a player's card and weren't sure what it actually does, here's how the system works, what EA has confirmed about Pathways, and how to pick up the free Evolution EA is handing Club Members right now.

1. What an Evolution Actually Does

An Evolution takes an eligible Player Item you already own and permanently upgrades its attributes, and sometimes its PlayStyles, once you complete a set of in-game objectives with it. EA has been clear that Evolutions are central to how it wants Ultimate Team squads to feel this year. In its October FUT Developer Notes, the team wrote: "We know how important Evolutions are for keeping the players you care about in your squad," adding that it had "made meaningful changes to the tuning of Evolutions" at launch and would "continue to monitor feedback in this area closely throughout the year."

In practice, that means the base loop is familiar if you've played past entries in the series — slot a card into an open Evolution, grind its objectives in the modes you already play, and claim the upgrades — but FC 27 changes what happens once you commit a card to one.

2. Pathways: The Big Change to Evolutions This Season

The headline addition in FC 27 is that selected Evolutions now offer more than one upgrade route for the same card, and EA has started publishing concrete examples of how those routes differ rather than just upgrading every stat a little. The clearest official example so far is the "Hall of FUT – David Luiz Pathway Evolution," which EA detailed as giving players a choice between three distinct directions for the same base card:

  • The Finisher — a set-piece focus that upgrades Shooting, Free Kick Accuracy, Shot Power and Long Shots, and grants the Dead Ball PlayStyle.
  • The Champion — a composed centre-back focus that upgrades Defending, Physical, Passing and Penalties, and grants a Defensive PlayStyle.
  • A National Hero — an aggressive, ball-playing focus that upgrades Pace, Physical, Passing and Aggression, and grants a Build-Up PlayStyle.

That's a genuinely different card depending on which path you commit to, not just a bigger number on the same card. If you're not sure what a PlayStyle like Dead Ball or Build-Up actually does on the pitch, it's worth reading through our breakdown of every PlayStyle and PlayStyle+ ability in FC 27 before you lock in a direction, since the upgrade is permanent once claimed.

3. The Rules While an Evolution Is in Progress

EA has also spelled out exactly what you give up and what flexibility you keep once a card is sitting inside an active Evolution:

  • The Player Item becomes untradable for the duration of the Evolution.
  • You can't discard it and you can't use it in a Squad Building Challenge while the Evolution is active.
  • On a Pathways Evolution, you can switch which path you're following at any time before you claim a level's reward — so an early change of mind doesn't cost you progress, as long as you haven't already banked that level's upgrade.
  • Every Evolution's upgrades are capped at a maximum value, so the card's starting attributes still decide how strong the finished item ends up being. A higher-rated base card gets more out of the same Evolution than a weaker one.

Keep that untradable restriction in mind before you commit a card you might want to sell on the transfer market, or one you were planning to feed into a Squad Building Challenge — once it's in an Evolution slot, both options are off the table until you finish or abandon it.

4. The Free David Luiz Evolution for Club Members

The David Luiz Pathway Evolution above isn't a Store item — it's a reward tied to EA Sports FC's long-running Club Membership program, which tracks how many consecutive years you've played the series. Players who played both EA Sports FC 26 and FC 27 before November 1, 2026 locked in FC 27 Club Member status, and the David Luiz Evolution became claimable from that date, available to complete "at your own pace" rather than against a timer.

Club Membership also layers in Red Bull-branded kits, crests and TIFOs in Ultimate Team, an AXP multiplier in The Grounds, and an unlockable Gareth Bale in Manager and Player Career for members. If you're not sure which tier you qualify for or want the full list of rewards by season count, our guide to FC 27 Club Membership rewards, tiers and the loyalty deadline breaks down all four tiers and what each one unlocks.

5. How You Actually Earn Evolutions: Squad Battles, Rivals and Objectives

Evolutions don't appear from nowhere — most are unlocked and progressed through Ultimate Team's core game modes. EA's official beginner's guide points new players toward Squad Battles specifically as a good source of Evolution progress, noting it's commonly used for the "Academy Grind" Evolution Objective. Squad Battles pits you against "AI controlled opponents featuring squads created by the Football Ultimate Team community" over full four-minute-per-half games, and EA recommends new players start on the Amateur or Semi-Pro difficulties. Unlike the shorter Moments challenges, Squad Battles results count toward most of Ultimate Team's general Objectives, which makes it one of the more efficient places to grind Evolution requirements without queuing into live opponents.

If you'd rather test your squad against real opponents, Division Rivals is the competitive ladder running underneath all of this — EA's own description calls the Elite Division of Rivals "the pinnacle of skill" in Ultimate Team, so it's worth working up to gradually rather than diving straight into Rivals with an unfinished squad.

6. Squad Building Challenges: What You Actually Give Up

Squad Building Challenges (SBCs) are the other major way to spend surplus Player Items, including duplicates you're not using. EA's beginner's guide is blunt about the trade-off: "putting a Player Item in an SBC is just like selling it" — once a card goes into a completed SBC, it's gone from your club for good, exchanged for whatever the challenge rewards instead. FC 27's "Streamlined SBCs" score the items you submit by OVR, Rarity, and Holographic status, which determines whether a given card is actually good value to spend on a particular challenge or better saved, sold on the transfer market, or fed into an Evolution instead.

That makes the decision tree fairly simple before you submit anything: if a card is still untradable inside an active Evolution, it's unavailable for SBCs anyway; if it's a duplicate or an item you're not using, compare what an SBC offers against what you'd get selling it or holding it for a future Evolution slot.

7. Chemistry Still Decides Whether an Upgraded Card Performs

An Evolution upgrade doesn't mean much if the card is fighting your Chemistry setup. EA's beginner's guide confirms a Player Item that's "Out of Position" has its "attributes negatively impacted on the pitch," and some of Ultimate Team's Moments challenges require hitting "a certain Chemistry threshold" before they'll even count. If you've put real resources into an Evolution — especially a Pathways upgrade that reshapes a card around a specific role, like The Champion's centre-back focus — make sure you're actually playing that card in the position and squad links it's built for, or you'll lose some of what you just unlocked. FC 27 also reworked several Chemistry links at launch; our rundown of the FUT Gallery, Hall of FUT and Chemistry changes from the Launch Update covers exactly what moved.

Evolutions aren't the only system handing out free permanent upgrades this season, either — EA is also running the separate Destined for Glory campaign, which upgrades a set of live Items based on real-world results rather than in-game objectives, so it's worth tracking both if you're building toward a specific squad.

Quick Tips Recap

  • Check whether an Evolution offers Pathways before you commit a card — a branching Evolution like the David Luiz one can turn the same base item into very different players.
  • You can switch Pathways freely before claiming a level's reward, but the card is untradable and locked out of SBCs the whole time it's in an active Evolution.
  • Play both FC 26 and FC 27 before next year's Club Membership deadline if you want to keep stacking tiers and rewards like the David Luiz Evolution.
  • Squad Battles is an efficient, AI-only way to chip away at Evolution Objectives like Academy Grind without needing to queue into Rivals.
  • Before you spend a card on an SBC, remember it's gone for good — compare it against selling it or saving it for an Evolution slot first.
  • An Evolution upgrade only pays off fully if the card is played in position with good Chemistry — an Out of Position card loses attributes regardless of how upgraded it is.
