Quick Summary

Rush is EA Sports FC 27's 5v5 small-sided mode, and it now spans four classic menus plus a brand-new home inside The Grounds. Here's exactly how the format works and where to find it in Kick-Off, Ultimate Team, Clubs, Manager Career and the open-world hub.

Rush is EA Sports FC 27's fast-paced 5v5 mode, and it is not tucked away in one corner of the game. In FC 27 it shows up in four familiar places — Kick-Off, Ultimate Team, Clubs and Manager Career — and it now has a brand-new home inside The Grounds, the open-world social hub that launched with the game. If you've only ever stumbled into Rush by accident, here is exactly how the mode works and every way to play it.

This guide sticks to what EA has actually confirmed about Rush and The Grounds for FC 27, so you won't find invented pitch measurements or card rules below — just the official format, the menu paths to reach it, and how the mode changed with the arrival of The Grounds.

1. What Is Rush?

Rush is a small-sided mode built around five-player teams. According to EA's official support documentation, a Rush team is made up of four user-controlled outfield players and one goalkeeper, and the exact setup depends on where you're playing it:

  • In Ultimate Team and Clubs, the goalkeeper is AI-controlled, and you only manage the four outfielders.
  • In Kick-Off and Manager Career, you control the entire outfield team, with the goalkeeper still handled by the AI.

Matches run seven minutes with no half-time, and the team with the most goals when the clock runs out wins. If the score is level, the match goes to an extra 2 minutes 20 seconds, and if nobody has broken the deadlock after that, it comes down to a 1-on-1 penalty shootout.

New players can get up to speed through the Learn To Play tab, which has a dedicated Rush section: work through the lessons, then jump into a Play Match to put them to use before you queue up for a real game.

2. Rush in Kick-Off

The simplest way to try Rush is offline, with friends on the couch. From the main menu, open the Kick-off tab, select the Rush tab, and hit Play. You pick a club or national team and play against the CPU or local friends — there's no online matchmaking for Rush through Kick-Off, so it's purely a couch co-op option for practising the format or settling a living-room argument.

3. Rush in Ultimate Team

Inside Ultimate Team, go to the Play tab and select Rush. From there you can choose Play Drop-In to get matched with strangers, or Play with Friends to bring your own squad. Every completed match and squad requirement earns Rush Points, which feed into Weekly Rush Objectives; claim whatever you've earned from the Weekly Rush Objectives menu once you've banked enough points.

4. Rush in Clubs

Clubs Rush works a little differently. Head to the Clubs tab, select Play, then Rush, then Play Rush, and hit Start Search once you're in the lobby. Here, Rush Points are earned based on the result of the match and the strength of the opponent you beat, and accumulating them moves you up through Rush ranks — your highest rank at the end of the season determines your rewards. Every win also banks a single Victory Point for your Club, and every Club on the platform sits on a global Clubs Rush leaderboard whose placement affects end-of-season rewards too.

5. Rush in Manager Career's Youth Academy

Rush also has a role in Manager Career, where it's tied to developing young players. Go to the Manager Career tab, open Academy, select the Youth Tournament tile, and choose Enter Tournament. Youth Tournament matches are organised as bi-monthly tournaments and are the main way to put your Youth Academy prospects through their paces before promoting them to the first team. Like Kick-Off, Rush in Manager Career is a couch co-op affair rather than an online queue.

6. Rush Inside The Grounds

The biggest change for FC 27 is that Rush now also lives inside The Grounds, EA's new shared football playground that holds up to 100 players across a central Terrace and three real-world-inspired districts — Montclair, Zeiza and Parkside. According to EA's official pitch notes for the mode, the world is organised around dedicated access points, and Rush gets its own:

  • Rush Stadium Access is the entry point for drop-in Rush, Ranked Rush and Rush Tournaments. Walking in here pulls you out of the open world and into standard Rush matchmaking, the same competitive queue you'd find through Clubs or Ultimate Team.
  • 11v11 Stadium Access sits alongside it for players who want a full-sided 11v11 Drop-In match instead.
  • Separately, the world's Small-sided activities include 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and an in-world version of Rush played on dirt pitches, scattered through the districts themselves rather than routed through a stadium menu. These casual matches last three minutes; in 1v1 each side has one CPU goalkeeper and one outfield player, while 2v2 and 3v3 drop goalkeepers entirely.

The in-world dirt pitches are scattered through districts like Zeiza, which leans on what EA describes as Argentina's Potrero street-football spirit for its look and feel — exactly the kind of informal, pick-up-game setting the Small-sided activities are meant to recreate before you ever queue for a ranked match.

EA's official deep dive on The Grounds also introduced four Mentors who front different challenge lines around the world: Alex Hunter for general player-improvement challenges, Kylian Mbappé for small-sided skills, agility and creativity, Chloe Kelly for grassroots-style Kickabouts, and Paulo Dybala for Clubs and Stadium events built around teamwork. If you're working through Rush-adjacent challenges in The Grounds, there's a decent chance one of them is guiding you through it.

Note that The Grounds, Clubs included, is only available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 — so if you're still on a last-gen console or the original Switch, the stadium-access version of Rush inside the open world isn't part of your game, though Rush through Kick-Off, Ultimate Team, Clubs and Manager Career still is.

7. Inviting Friends and Matchmaking

In both Ultimate Team and Clubs, you can invite up to three other players into a Rush match. Invite fewer than three and the game fills the remaining outfield slots by skill-matching you with other players, so you're never short a teammate. In Ultimate Team, open Play with Friends, hit the plus icon to pull up the EA connect Friends list, send your invites, then choose Select Event — any empty slots get filled automatically. In Clubs, select Play, then Rush, then open the EA connect menu to invite friends the same way; if you fill a lobby with three players from the same Club, the match is played in your Club's kit, crest and name.

Matchmaking itself is based on your Match Rating, which EA says reflects your contribution to team efforts rather than just individual stats like goals or assists — so playing a disciplined, team-first game in Rush matters for who you get matched against, not just your scoreline.

Quick Tips

  • Start in Learn To Play > Rush if you've never played the mode before — the lessons cover positioning without AI backup for the whole outfield.
  • Remember that Kick-Off and Manager Career Rush are couch co-op only; if you want online drop-in or ranked play, go through Ultimate Team or Clubs instead.
  • Inside The Grounds, use Rush Stadium Access for a competitive, matchmade game, and the in-world dirt pitches for a quick, lower-stakes 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 between errands.
  • In Clubs, every win banks a Victory Point for your Club's leaderboard position even if your personal Rush rank doesn't move much that week.
  • Bring friends when you can — a full three-player invite means no skill-matched strangers filling your squad.
