Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — Shipment, Halloween Modes and the Season 1 Roadmap Explained
Infinity Ward's official pre-season roadmap packs Modern Warfare 4's first two weeks: Shipment returns October 27, a new Halloween mode called Possession Mode arrives October 29, Infected comes back October 30, and Season 1 launches November 6 with full Warzone integration.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23, and Infinity Ward is not slowing down. A content roadmap the studio posted on its official X account lays out a dense two weeks: the classic map Shipment returns to multiplayer on October 27, a new Halloween mode called Possession Mode follows on October 29, the fan-favorite Infected mode comes back the day after, and it all leads into Season 1 on November 6 — the update that folds Call of Duty: Warzone into Modern Warfare 4 for good.
Here is what is confirmed, when each piece lands, and what changes for players on each platform.
1. Modern Warfare 4's Launch Week, Briefly
Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and (at a later date) Nintendo Switch 2 — it skips PS4 and Xbox One entirely, a first for the modern Call of Duty era. Campaign early access opened October 16 for digital pre-order customers, DMZ early access followed on October 20, and the full game, including multiplayer, went live worldwide on October 23.
The campaign puts players in the middle of a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula, following a young squad of South Korean soldiers on the collapsing front line while Captain Price runs a separate, off-book operation that eventually collides with the same conflict. 2. Shipment Returns to Multiplayer — October 27
Shipment, the tiny shipping-container map that originated in 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, was not part of Modern Warfare 4's 12 confirmed launch maps. Infinity Ward confirmed it was coming back in a September 29 multiplayer trailer, where the map appeared briefly rebuilt in the game's current engine, and the official pre-season roadmap pins its actual arrival in multiplayer to Tuesday, October 27 — four days after launch.
Shipment has historically shipped with its own high-chaos 24/7 playlist in past Call of Duty titles, though Infinity Ward has not yet confirmed whether Modern Warfare 4 will get a dedicated Shipment playlist at launch or fold it into standard map rotation first. Players who want the map's trademark close-quarters pace should check in-game playlists directly on October 27.
3. The Official Roadmap, Straight From Infinity Ward
Rather than relying on secondhand leaks, Infinity Ward posted the full pre-season schedule itself on October 14, summarizing it in five words: "Campaign. DMZ. Multiplayer. Shipment. Season 1." That post is the primary source for every date in this article.
We’ve got a busy few weeks ahead.

Campaign. DMZ. Multiplayer. Shipment. Season 1.
The road ahead starts with Early Access.

Reporting on the roadmap graphic itself (via CharlieIntel) adds two more pre-season dates beyond Shipment: a new Halloween-themed mode called Possession Mode on October 29, and the return of the classic Infected mode on October 30. Neither has an official Infinity Ward blog post with full details yet, so treat the exact mechanics of each as unconfirmed until Infinity Ward's own patch notes go live on those dates.
4. Possession Mode — October 29
Possession Mode is the newest addition to the pre-season schedule and the only entirely new mode in the lineup — everything else on the roadmap is a returning classic. Its October 29 date places it right in the run-up to Halloween, which lines up with Call of Duty's history of running seasonal Halloween events around this time of year. Infinity Ward has not detailed the mode's rules publicly yet; players should watch the official Call of Duty blog and patch notes page for the breakdown when it goes live.
5. Infected Returns — October 30
Infected is one of Call of Duty's longest-running community modes: one player starts as the "infected" with a melee-only loadout, and every player they eliminate joins their side, with the last survivor on the human team winning the round. It has appeared in nearly every mainline entry since Modern Warfare 2 (2009) in some form, and its return to Modern Warfare 4 on October 30 — the day before Halloween — continues that tradition.
6. Season 1 and Warzone Integration — November 6
The roadmap's final stop is the big one. Season 1 launches simultaneously for Modern Warfare 4 and Call of Duty: Warzone on November 6, two weeks after Modern Warfare 4's full release. From that date, Warzone adopts Modern Warfare 4's content and seasonal progression, merging the two games into a single live-service structure the way Season 1 has done for every mainline Call of Duty since the Warzone era began.
A few specifics are already confirmed for that transition:
- Legacy content carries over. Operators and weapons from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 — including skins and Blueprints players already own — remain usable after the Season 1 switch.
- Last-gen Warzone support ends. Call of Duty: Warzone stops being playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One once Season 1 begins, matching Modern Warfare 4's own current-gen-only release.
- A new Battle Pass and BlackCell. Season 1 introduces its own paid Battle Pass track and BlackCell bundle, Call of Duty's premium progression tier, alongside the usual free reward track.
No exact launch time has been announced for November 6 yet; Infinity Ward has historically rolled seasonal updates out in the early morning Pacific time, with maintenance windows that can shift the exact minute. Check the official Call of Duty patch notes page on the day for the confirmed time and full patch notes.
7. What This Means If You're Still Deciding Whether to Jump In
If you are waiting to see how the game's post-launch support shapes up before buying, this roadmap is a reasonable signal: Infinity Ward is shipping a classic fan-favorite map, a brand-new mode, and a returning community mode all inside the first two weeks, rather than leaving the game to sit on its 12 launch maps until Season 1. Whether that pace holds through the rest of Season 1 is something only the November 6 patch notes will confirm.
Remember that Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone purchase and will not be part of Xbox Game Pass until Holiday 2027 — worth knowing if you were hoping to try it through a subscription first.
