Quick Summary

Infinity Ward's October 28, 2026 update gave Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 its first broad weapon-tuning pass, normalizing submachine gun hit-location damage and adjusting ten other weapons. Here's every weapon change, the Quick Fix Perk fix, the Possum trait tweak in DMZ, and the new playlists added October 27.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 got its first broad multiplayer weapon-tuning pass on October 28, 2026, five days after launch. Infinity Ward's update normalizes submachine gun hit-location damage, adjusts ten other weapons, fixes a Quick Fix Perk exploit, closes several DMZ exploits, and folds in three new playlists that arrived a day earlier. Here is every change, straight from the studio's own patch notes.

The studio confirmed the update on its official X account the same day, describing it as the game's "first weapon tuning adjustments" alongside fixes for Challenges, Killstreaks, the Quick Fix Perk, and DMZ Loadouts and Exfil issues.

1. Modern Warfare 4's launch-week multiplayer, briefly

Modern Warfare 4 launched worldwide on October 23, 2026 with 20 multiplayer maps, 12 modes, 33 weapons, 33 Operators and 17 killstreaks on day one. Coal, a 6v6 Core map set in an abandoned Soviet coal-processing plant in the mountains, is one of the launch maps still seeing heavy multiplayer traffic a week in.

Since release, Infinity Ward has been pushing near-daily fixes. The October 28 patch is the first to touch weapon balance directly, after two earlier rounds of bug fixes on October 23 and October 24.

2. Assault rifles: Han 86, Kastov 762, M4 and Oden adjusted

Five assault rifles changed in this patch, split between buffs to range and nerfs to hit-location damage:

  • Han 86: max damage range raised from 1120 to 1200 (+7%), but its neck and upper-torso damage multipliers were both cut from 1.1 to 1.0 (-9% each).
  • Kastov 762: max damage range raised from 950 to 1050 (+11%), a straight range buff with no other changes.
  • M4: max damage range raised from 990 to 1020 (+3%), a smaller version of the same buff.
  • Oden: neck and upper-torso multipliers both reduced from 1.2 to 1.1 (-8% each), and lower-torso cut from 1.1 to 1.0 (-9%). With the Sentinel Apex attachment equipped, max damage range also drops from 870 to 820 (-6%), its first mid damage range falls from 1810 to 1740 (-4%), and muzzle velocity is reduced by 0.07.
  • Hyeon Burst: with the Hyperburst Apex attachment, full-auto max damage drops from 37 to 34 (-8%) but its max damage range jumps from 970 to 1220 (+26%), and the weapon's first mid damage range value was removed outright.

The marksman rifle Patriot XMR also saw two attachment-specific tweaks: the EXP Haste 80L 14" light barrel's recoil control penalty fell from 8% to 6% (-25% relative), and the FJX Fury IV skeleton grip's penalty fell from 5% to 4% (-20% relative) — both quality-of-life buffs for players chasing recoil control on the platform.

3. SMGs: a limb-damage normalization pass

Infinity Ward said the patch's broader goal was "normalizing hit location damage for a more consistent TTK," and submachine guns absorbed most of that change. Five of the game's SMGs — ISO Nightshade, PPSh-41, VEL 46, Wz.55 Striga and X-58 Nyx — all had their six limb damage multipliers (both arms, both upper arms and both hands) raised uniformly from 0.95 to 1.0, a 5% buff to limb shots across the board.

  • ISO Nightshade: limb multipliers only, no other changes.
  • PPSh-41: limb multipliers raised, plus faster ADS-in speed (300ms to 280ms, -7%) and small movement-speed increases while strafing, crouching, hipfiring, moving and sprinting.
  • VEL 46: limb multipliers only.
  • Wz.55 Striga: limb multipliers, plus max damage range up from 440 to 470 (+7%) and its first mid damage range up from 825 to 840 (+2%).
  • X-58 Nyx: limb multipliers, plus head damage multiplier raised from 1.25 to 1.3 (+4%). With the Void Apex attachment, max damage range rises from 437 to 460 (+5%) and mid damage range from 788 to 815 (+3%).

In practical terms, every SMG in the game now takes full damage on limb hits instead of a 5% penalty, which should make close-range duels feel more consistent regardless of exactly where a bullet lands.

4. LMGs and shotguns: two nerfs, one buff

Light machine guns got mixed treatment. The APOC-338 was nerfed across the board: mid damage down from 38 to 37 (-3%), mid damage range down from 1980 to 1900 (-4%), and minimum damage down from 35 to 33 (-6%). The FiNN LMG was also nerfed, losing mid damage range (1720 to 1620, -6%) and taking cuts to both upper-arm damage multipliers (1.1 to 1.0, -9% each). The Type 73, by contrast, got a small buff with its Assault Apex attachment: minimum damage rises from 19 to 20 (+5%).

Shotguns saw one change: the Warlord's 12G Slug Rounds ammunition had its second mid damage range cut from 900 to 810, a 10% reduction that pulls back its effective one-shot range.

5. Quick Fix Perk fix, Free-for-All score limit restored

Outside of weapon tuning, the update closed a health-regeneration exploit on the Quick Fix Perk. Infinity Ward explained that Quick Fix was continuing to regenerate health even while a player kept taking damage, making players "more tanky than intended" — damage now properly interrupts the regeneration, and the Perk's hitmarker icon was updated to match.

Free-for-All's score limit, which the studio had quietly lowered the day before after matches were running long, was reverted back to 30 following player feedback. Party size in the mode is capped at two players, and Infinity Ward confirmed Final Killcam — a staple of recent Modern Warfare titles — will return in a future backend update rather than this patch.

A handful of smaller multiplayer fixes shipped alongside those headline changes: camo and Special Camo progress counters are no longer missing for several weapon categories, the Fungal Grid Camo now shows up correctly in the selection menu, Melee Kills, Backstabs and Takedowns now track correctly for Challenges, and players no longer load into Gun Game looking like the Operator Reece regardless of what they actually selected. Infinity Ward also confirmed it reduced dive velocity by 23% as a short-term fix for a sprint-into-dive speed boost exploit, while it works on a permanent solution that won't affect normal diving.

6. DMZ: Possum trait tightened, several exploits closed

DMZ's Possum trait — which lets a downed high-level Operator get a second chance — was tuned because players were using it as a combat tool rather than the intended survival mechanic. Players can no longer activate Possum while the team that killed them is still nearby, or until four minutes have passed; Infinity Ward says both the range and the duration are tunable going forward.

DMZ bug fixes in the same update include a case where Possum could revive players who had already abandoned their Operator and get stuck in an unplayable state, a black-screen bug after a full squad wipe while a teammate had Possum equipped, and an issue where using the 3D Printer during deployment could send players into a match without their Free Loadout weapons or equipment. The patch also closed several unspecified DMZ exploits, fixed weapons occasionally vanishing when swapped repeatedly between the Backpack and weapon slots, and corrected a bug that denied players their 3-Plate Armor Vest reward at DMZ Level 37.

7. New playlists added October 27

A day before the weapon-tuning patch, Infinity Ward refreshed the Quick Play rotation with three additions: Shipment 24/7, a Gunfight variant called Kill Block: 6v6 Gunfight, and Gun Game, alongside the existing Frontline, Inflation and Collateral playlists. Kill Block drops two teams into randomized, ever-changing map combinations where everyone uses the same randomized loadout, rewarding adaptability over a memorized class setup.

8. Known issues and what's next

Infinity Ward flagged four open issues in the same notes: the Patriot XMR's Platinum Camo Challenge doesn't display progress correctly in the UI (though it still tracks and can be completed), some Calling Card challenges aren't tracking as intended, Best Play selection logic in multiplayer has problems, and players who enter Classic Prestige through the DMZ menus rather than the Multiplayer menus can't create new MP classes until older classes with relocked Loadout items are deleted. The studio pointed players to its official Trello board and the @CODUpdates account for the latest status on all four.

With the launch-week bug sweep largely done and the first balance pass shipped, the next major checkpoint for Modern Warfare 4 is Season 1, which Infinity Ward has said will follow in the weeks ahead.

Quick tips

  • SMG users get a free 5% damage buff on all limb hits across every launch SMG — lean into aggressive, close-range duels more than before.
  • Avoid the Oden's Sentinel Apex build and the APOC-338 and FiNN LMG if you were relying on their pre-patch range or damage; all three got measurable nerfs.
  • The Han 86, Kastov 762, M4 and Hyeon Burst (with Hyperburst Apex) all hit harder at range now — worth a second look if you dropped them after launch.
  • Quick Fix no longer heals through incoming damage, so don't expect to out-heal a sustained gunfight with it anymore.
  • Try Kill Block or the refreshed Shipment 24/7 and Gun Game playlists if you want something outside Core 6v6 this week.
