Quick Summary

Modern Warfare 4's DMZ mode hides four deep progression systems behind its Forward Operating Base: Operator Trait Trees, DMZ Operator Prestige, the PvP Bounty system, and the Boss Board's Lieutenant and Commander hunts. Here's exactly how each one works.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched worldwide on October 23, and alongside the campaign and multiplayer, its DMZ extraction mode came with its own deep progression layer built around the Forward Operating Base (FOB). Underneath the surface-level "loot, craft, extract" loop sit four systems that decide how fast you actually get stronger in Hajin: Operator Trait Trees, DMZ Operator Prestige, the Bounty system for PvP Killers and Hunters, and the Boss Board's Lieutenant and Commander hunts. Here's exactly how each one works, grounded in Call of Duty's own official FOB intel guide.

1. What Is DMZ, and Where Does the FOB Fit In?

DMZ is Call of Duty's persistent extraction shooter mode: drop into the open-world Exclusion Zone of Hajin solo or in a squad, loot gear, fight AI forces and rival Operators, and try to reach an exfil point with everything you've found still in your backpack. Die before you exfil, and most of what you're carrying is gone. DMZ Early Access opened on October 20 for players who pre-ordered the Standard Digital or Vault Edition, ahead of the game's full October 23 launch across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

The Forward Operating Base is your hub between deployments, reached from the DMZ main menu. It's where you offload loot, gear up, pick up new Orders, and manage every permanent progression system DMZ has to offer. 2. Every FOB Station, and the Order You Unlock Them

Six stations are available the moment you first enter the FOB: Operators (Active Duty), DMZ Orders, Stash/Loadout, the Firing Range, Survival Kits, and the Bounty Leaderboard. The rest unlock as you level up your DMZ Player Progression, which runs all the way to level 70:

  • 3D Printer — unlocks at DMZ Player Level 2
  • Boss Board — unlocks after completing your second DMZ Order
  • Vendor — unlocks at DMZ Player Level 5
  • Gunsmith — unlocks at DMZ Player Level 10
  • Dog Tag Case — unlocks at DMZ Player Level 20

Stations themselves can later be upgraded through the 3D Printer using loot found in the Exclusion Zone, so a fresh FOB gradually turns into a fully kitted-out base over repeated deployments.

3. Active Duty Operators and the Three Trait Trees

In DMZ, Operators are largely a playstyle choice rather than a cosmetic one. You start with two Active Duty slots (three with the Vault Edition), and whichever Operator you recruit into a slot is locked there until you dismiss them. Each Operator earns their own DMZ XP, tracked through a Dog Tag that levels up through six tiers — Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Damascus and Onyx, each with three sub-ranks — for 18 total levels. Every Dog Tag level-up awards one Trait Point.

Trait Points are spent across three Trait Trees — Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist — each holding 22 possible Traits (six visible Major Traits plus 16 randomized Minor Traits), for 66 Traits total across the system. Since an Operator caps out at 18 Trait Points, you can't unlock everything on one character: you're choosing between maxing one or two trees or spreading points across all three. Once a Trait is picked, it's locked in — there's no respec.

If an Operator is killed and left MIA, they can't redeploy until recovered with DMZ Cash (the cost scales with how many Traits they've earned), and they return without their old gear.

4. DMZ Operator Prestige: Requirements and Rewards

Once an Operator banks all 18 Trait Points, you can Prestige them at the Operators station — a system separate from both the standard Player Progression and from core multiplayer's own Prestige track (covered in our launch Operator, weapon and Prestige explainer). Prestiging strips an Operator's current Traits and resets them, but permanently grants one random Prestige Trait — and an Operator can hold up to three.

The catch is that Prestiging costs real gear and DMZ Cash, and the requirements climb with each level:

  • First Prestige: two weapons with three attachment slots (Rare+), a Rare+ Plate Carrier, a Rare+ Backpack, four Rare+ 3D Printer Ingredients, and 200,000 DMZ Cash.
  • Second Prestige: two weapons with four attachment slots, an Epic Plate Carrier and Backpack, four Epic Ingredients, and 300,000 DMZ Cash.
  • Third Prestige (and beyond): two weapons with four attachment slots, a Legendary Plate Carrier and Backpack, four Legendary Ingredients, and 500,000 DMZ Cash.

After the third Prestige Trait, further Prestiges no longer add a slot — instead you're offered a new random Permanent Trait and have to choose whether to swap it in for one of your existing three or decline it.

5. The Bounty System: Killers, Hunters and the Most Wanted Board

DMZ's PvP loop runs on a Bounty system tracked right on your Dog Tag. Kill four rival human Operators across your deployments and you become officially "Wanted" — at which point nearby players are automatically alerted whenever you're close. The more Operators a Wanted player eliminates, the higher their Bounty value climbs in DMZ Cash.

Playing the other side of that loop makes you a "Hunter": visit a Bounty Station during a deployment and spend DMZ Cash to buy intel pinpointing Wanted players on the Tac-Map, then track them down, kill them, and extract with their Dog Tag to collect the reward. A Bounty and its Wanted status are wiped if that Operator dies without their Dog Tag being recovered, or if they pay it off themselves at a Bounty Station. Back at the FOB, the Bounty Leaderboard station tracks the Top 50 Most Wanted players and the Top 50 Bounty Hunters, updated weekly and viewable globally or among friends.

6. The Boss Board: Hunting Lieutenants and Commanders

The Boss Board unlocks after your second completed DMZ Order and splits high-value AI targets into two categories. Lieutenants are elite operatives with unique loadouts and sometimes a squad of loyal troops; you purchase intel on a specific Lieutenant with DMZ Cash, hunt them down (or climb a Lieutenant Hunt tower to mark the nearest one on your Tac-Map), and extract with their Dog Tag Case for the payout — though picking it up broadcasts your position to every other squad in the zone.

Commanders, by contrast, don't need purchased intel — they're always present somewhere in Hajin and simply show up on your Tac Map when you're close, with your Team Leader calling out a warning. Three Commanders are confirmed: Colossus, a seven-foot-tall, heavily armored soldier carrying a minigun that fires depleted-uranium rounds; Deathstalker, a helicopter-sized autonomous drone armed with dual machine-gun turrets; and a roaming North Korean battle Tank on active patrol. Taking one down for the first time pays DMZ Cash, plus valuable 3D Printer Ingredients on every successful kill-and-extract after that.

7. The 3D Printer: How Crafting Actually Works

Once unlocked at DMZ Player Level 2, the 3D Printer is DMZ's crafting hub, and it runs on three ingredient types. Recipes have to be unlocked first — by leveling your DMZ Player rank, completing DMZ Orders, or looting a Recipe item and successfully extracting with it (which also pays a flat 5,000 DMZ Cash). Resources — Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals — are broken down automatically from loot as you find it. 3D Printer Ingredients, like Binding Catalysts or Biomaterials, are collected intact from specific locations across Hajin and have to be manually moved from your Backpack to your Stash after extraction.

Once you've got a Recipe and enough of both ingredient types, you can craft multiples at once and send finished items straight to your Stash or equip them directly. Upgrading the 3D Printer itself (also done through the Printer, using Ingredients) unlocks the ability to craft station upgrades and higher-rarity gear, making it the single most important station to prioritize past the early game.

Quick Tips Recap

  • Visit the FOB's six starting stations first — Operators, DMZ Orders, Stash/Loadout, Firing Range, Survival Kits and the Bounty Leaderboard — before chasing the Level 2+ unlocks.
  • Spend Trait Points deliberately: once a Trait is picked there's no respec, and an Operator caps at 18 points total.
  • Only Prestige an Operator once you can afford to lose the required gear — the Cash cost nearly triples by the third Prestige.
  • Four PvP kills makes you Wanted; pay off a Bounty at a Bounty Station if you'd rather not be hunted.
  • Check the Boss Board as soon as it unlocks — Commander kills need no paid intel and reward 3D Printer Ingredients every time.
