Quick Summary

Modern Warfare 4's camo grind runs through seven tiers, from automatic Military camos to the nine-camo Mastery finish line. Here's exactly how Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break and Divergence are unlocked, and why Platinum won't show up until an entire weapon class is done.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 ships with one of the series' deepest weapon-cosmetic grinds yet: a multi-tier camo ladder that runs from a weapon's first unlock all the way to a handful of coveted Mastery finishes. If you're wondering why a camo challenge suddenly refuses to progress, or why Platinum won't even show up on your favorite rifle, the answer almost always comes down to how the tiers are gated. Here's how the system actually works, tier by tier.

1. What Are Camo Challenges in Modern Warfare 4?

Camo challenges are per-weapon objectives — eliminations with specific attachments, headshots, multi-kills, and so on — that unlock new paint jobs for a gun as you complete them. They sit on top of normal weapon leveling: leveling a weapon unlocks its attachments and Apex Attachment, while camo challenges are a separate, optional grind layered over the same weapon. The two systems interact, though — several of the later camo tiers specifically require certain attachments to be equipped, so a weapon's confirmed Apex Attachment and Gunsmith build can make or break a particular challenge.

Camos are also tracked separately per game mode. Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone each have their own completion requirements and their own Mastery camos, so maxing out a weapon in one mode doesn't automatically finish it in another.

2. The Camo Ladder: Military, Special, Gold and Beyond

The full progression, confirmed consistently across community camo trackers since launch, runs in this order:

  • Military camos — unlock automatically as a weapon levels up, no challenge required.
  • Special camos — a short set of challenge-based camos that come after the military tier.
  • Gold — the first "completionist" camo, unlocked with a single elimination-count challenge.
  • Platinum — unlocked only after every weapon in that gun's class has Gold.
  • Harmonic Break — a tougher per-weapon challenge that opens once Platinum is done.
  • Divergence — the completionist reward for clearing Harmonic Break on every launch weapon.
  • Mastery camos — nine total finishing camos, split three apiece between Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, unlocked once Divergence is in hand.

Each tier is strictly sequential — you cannot skip ahead, and several tiers are gated by more than just the weapon in front of you.

3. How to Unlock Gold Camo

Gold is the first tier most players actually have to think about. To unlock it on a weapon, finish that weapon's Military and Special camos first, then complete one elimination-count challenge: 15 eliminations in a single Multiplayer match, or 100 eliminations in a single DMZ match. It's a single-match requirement, so a strong Team Deathmatch or Kill Confirmed round is usually the fastest route — streaks and killstreak eliminations typically count toward the total, which makes high-kill modes far more efficient than objective-focused ones like Search and Destroy.

4. Platinum Camo: Why It's Locked by Weapon Class

Platinum is where the grind stops being about one gun and starts being about an entire weapon class. You cannot begin Platinum challenges on a specific weapon until every weapon in that class — assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, and so on — has already earned Gold. For the assault rifle class alone, that means clearing Gold on every launch AR before Platinum challenges unlock on any of them.

This is the single biggest point of confusion for players new to the system: if a Platinum challenge isn't appearing on a weapon you expect it to, the fix usually isn't to grind that gun harder — it's to go finish Gold on the rest of its class first. Exact Platinum requirements (headshot counts, multi-kill counts, and similar) vary by weapon and have shifted slightly between community trackers since launch, so check the challenge listed in your own Gunsmith menu rather than relying on a number from an older guide.

5. Harmonic Break and Divergence: The Completionist Grind

Once Platinum is done, each weapon gets a Harmonic Break challenge — a tougher, often multi-kill-based objective that represents the last per-weapon hurdle before the endgame camos. Clearing Harmonic Break on every one of the game's launch weapons unlocks Divergence, the completionist camo that in turn opens the door to Mastery. In practice, Harmonic Break is where most of the grind's real time investment lives, since by this point every weapon needs individual attention rather than a single blanket challenge.

6. The Nine Mastery Camos: Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone

Once Divergence is unlocked, three separate Mastery camo chains open up — one each for Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone — for nine Mastery camos total. Each mode's Mastery camo has its own dedicated challenge built around that mode's pace and objectives, which is why a player who only plays Warzone will still need to put in Multiplayer and DMZ time (or vice versa) to collect all nine. This mirrors the structure the series has used since the Gold-to-Damascus-style ladders of earlier titles, just reorganized around Modern Warfare 4's Military-to-Divergence naming.

Progression resets if you choose to go through Modern Warfare 4's Prestige system on your player rank, but weapon-level Prestige is a separate toggle — it resets a gun's level and attachments, not its earned camos, so camo progress you've already banked stays with the weapon.

7. Tips for Grinding Camos Faster

  • Pick high-kill modes for elimination challenges. Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed and Ground War generate far more eliminations per minute than objective modes, which matters most for Gold's flat kill-count requirement.
  • Clear Gold across an entire class before chasing Platinum on your favorite gun. Since Platinum won't appear until the whole class has Gold, spreading your attention across every weapon in a class early saves a lot of wasted matches later.
  • Check the challenge text in your own Gunsmith menu. Per-weapon Platinum and Harmonic Break requirements have varied by gun and have been adjusted since launch, so treat any outside guide's exact numbers as a starting point, not gospel.
  • Lean on DMZ for elimination volume. AI-controlled enemies count toward DMZ's 100-elimination Gold requirement, which can be a steadier grind than hunting for kill streaks against other players.
  • Don't confuse weapon Prestige with camo progress. Resetting a gun through weapon Prestige affects its level and attachments, not the camos you've already unlocked on it.

The camo ladder is a long-term project by design — most players will still be working through Platinum and Harmonic Break long after they've settled into their preferred loadouts and finished exploring Modern Warfare 4's full map and mode lineup. If you're splitting time with extraction-mode runs, the same weapons you're leveling in Multiplayer carry their camo progress into DMZ's Hajin exclusion zone, so there's no need to grind a gun twice from scratch.

Quick Recap

  • Camo order: Military → Special → Gold → Platinum → Harmonic Break → Divergence → Mastery.
  • Gold needs Military + Special done, then 15 kills in one Multiplayer match or 100 in one DMZ match.
  • Platinum is locked by weapon class — every gun in the class needs Gold first.
  • Harmonic Break on every launch weapon unlocks Divergence.
  • Divergence opens all nine Mastery camos — three each for Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone.
  • Weapon Prestige resets level and attachments, not camo progress.
