Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies Mode Explained: Dark Aether, Ashes of the Damned and How to Survive
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's Zombies mode traps an eight-person crew in the Dark Aether on its launch map, Ashes of the Damned. Here's how the Standard, Directed, Survival and Cursed modes work, plus the Essence, Salvage and Perk systems behind every run.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 brought Treyarch's Round-Based Zombies mode back with its biggest launch map yet, Ashes of the Damned, along with a reworked set of modes, a new Wonder Weapon and a currency system that splits survival spending into two separate resources. Here is how the mode actually works, from the Dark Aether story setup to the exact Power-Ups and Perk-a-Colas you'll find in a match.
1. The Story: Trapped in the Dark Aether
Black Ops 7 Zombies picks up where Black Ops 6's "Reckoning" story left off. According to Treyarch's official Zombies deep dive, the entire Black Ops 7 Zombies experience — including future maps — takes place within the "beating heart" of the Dark Aether, where different timelines collide to form a combined, eight-person crew: Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo, Richtofen, Maya, Weaver, Carver and Grey.
Long-time fans will recognize three returning voices: Nolan North as Dr. Edward Richtofen, Fred Tatasciore as Nikolai Belinski, and Steve Blum as "Tank" Dempsey. Nelson Lee debuts as the new voice of Takeo Masaki, reimagined as hailing from 16th-century feudal Japan. You can bring any Black Ops 7 Operator into Zombies, but Treyarch confirms that choosing a member of this "Dedicated Crew" unlocks extra in-match dialogue and the richest version of the story.
2. Ashes of the Damned: Inside the Launch Map
Treyarch describes Ashes of the Damned as an off-world "Bermuda Triangle," where real locations from different eras and dimensions have been torn loose and dropped into the Dark Aether. The map opens with a twisted version of Janus Towers Plaza — a triple-towered superstructure that once stood in Liberty Falls, now half-collapsed and arcing with electricity — and connects to five more main locations: Vandorn Farm, Blackwater Lake, Ashwood, Exit 115, and Zarya Cosmodrome.
These six areas are linked by treacherous roadways blanketed in what Treyarch simply calls "the Fog." Traveling through fog zones on foot is explicitly discouraged — enemies there spawn faster, hit harder, and move quicker than anywhere else on the map, and explosive growths lurk in the mist. The safer option is Ol' Tessie, the map's new Wonder Vehicle (more on that below).
3. Ol' Tessie and the Necrofluid Gauntlet
Ol' Tessie is a rusting pickup truck that doubles as transportation and a weapon, driven with guidance from the map's AI companion, T.E.D.D. It isn't invincible — Treyarch notes it can be "temporarily inoperable" after heavy damage and needs repairing — but careful exploration reveals upgrades, including a mountable DG-2 turret.
The map's new Wonder Weapon is the Necrofluid Gauntlet, a skull-fanged glove that reshapes a glowing, viscous fluid into spikes it fires at range before pulling them back into itself, feeding on the life force of anything they hit. Treyarch describes it as having "vampiric tendencies," including the ability to pull in items and Power-Ups from a distance. It joins the returning Ray Gun and Ray Gun Mark II as the map's signature weapons.
4. The Bestiary: What's Hunting You
Base and Armored Zombies form the foundation of every horde, swarming in masses and — once you escape their reach — tearing flesh from their own bodies to throw at you. Ravagers are faster, pack-hunting scavengers drawn to dropped Salvage, capable of latching onto Ol' Tessie even at speed. The Zursa is the map's Elite-tier threat: an undead bear whose bite and claw strikes leave lingering wounds, and whose fur hides swarms of stinging "Zombees."
Treyarch also rebalanced several returning enemy behaviors for Black Ops 7: Super Sprinters now appear less frequently past round 55, Armored Zombies no longer gain the sprint ability at high rounds (though their armor is tougher against explosives), and a new audio stinger warns you whenever zombie strength ramps up for a new round.
5. Four Ways to Play: Standard, Directed, Survival and Cursed
Black Ops 7 launched with four distinct Zombies modes. Standard is the full Round-Based experience on Ashes of the Damned, with access to the Main Quest and Side Quest content, aimed at experienced players. Directed strips that down into a guided, objective-led path through the Main Quest for newer players or anyone chasing story completion.
Survival brought small, self-contained endurance maps back to Zombies for the first time since Black Ops 2. The launch Survival map is set on the Vandorn Family Farm, a confined slice of the larger map with no quests — just a squad holding out against the horde for as long as possible, with machines like Pack-a-Punch relocated into the farm's smaller footprint since they don't normally spawn there in Standard mode.
Cursed is the mode built for veterans. Treyarch gates it behind in-game criteria, and once unlocked it drops you in with nothing but a pistol, no minimap, and a classic points system inspired by Black Ops 3. The goal is hunting down Relics — Dark Aether artifacts themed around Black Ops Zombies history — each with a unique discovery condition. Equipping a Relic adds a debuff to your run (a four-Perk limit or no Ammo Caches, for example) in exchange for unlocking even more powerful Relics and mode-exclusive rewards.
6. Loadouts, Weapon Prestige and Build Codes
Outside of Cursed, every Zombies loadout is built from a ranged Primary or Secondary weapon, a melee weapon, one Field Upgrade (swappable mid-match), Tactical and Lethal Equipment, and a five-GobbleGum Pack. Black Ops 7 launched with 30 weapons available in Zombies, each with its own leveling track and Military, Special and Mastery Camos to unlock.
Weapon Prestige carries over from multiplayer — Treyarch confirms it's available on every Black Ops 7 weapon in Zombies, unlocking a unique Prestige Attachment and additional Camos each time. New for this game are Build Codes: once you've built a weapon in the Gunsmith, you can share the exact configuration with a code, or import one a friend sends you. For the full breakdown of how Prestige and Weapon Prestige work across every mode, Walkthroughs.net covers the complete Black Ops 7 progression and Prestige system in a separate guide.
7. Essence, Salvage, Perks and Power-Ups
Zombies runs on two separate currencies. Essence is earned quickly from kills and spent on the usual round-to-round costs — Wall Buys, Ammo Caches, Jump Pads, Mystery Box spins, Perk-a-Cola and Pack-a-Punch machines, and unlocking doors. Salvage drops from fallen enemies and is spent at the Arsenal Machine, either to apply an Ammo Mod's elemental effect to your current weapon or to upgrade its Rarity Tier from Base (Grey) through Uncommon, Rare, Epic and finally Legendary (Orange) for more damage. Treyarch also added a catch-up mechanic: every ten rounds, you're refunded roughly half of any Salvage you missed picking up.
Perk-a-Colas return in force — 12 types in total, including fan favorites like Jugger-Nog, Speed Cola, Quick Revive and PhD Flopper alongside the new Wisp Tea — plus six Ammo Mods and six Field Upgrades. Every one of those 24 enhancements can be fully researched into eight Augments apiece (one Major and two Minor active at a time), for 192 total Augments across the game. Random, round-based Power-Ups round out the systems: Insta-Kill, Double Points, Max Ammo, Nuke, Fire Sale, Bonus Points, Full Power, Max Armor and a Random Perk drop that hands you a Perk you don't already own.
Quick-Tips Recap
- Stick to the Dedicated Crew Operators (Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo, Richtofen, Maya, Weaver, Carver, Grey) for the fullest version of the story.
- Avoid lingering in the Fog between Ashes of the Damned's six main locations — enemies there are stronger and spawn faster.
- Use Ol' Tessie to cross fog zones safely, and keep an eye on its health so it doesn't break down mid-escape.
- Save Salvage for Rarity upgrades at the Arsenal Machine; the game refunds roughly half of what you miss every ten rounds.
- Don't attempt Cursed mode until you're ready to lose your Loadout weapons, your minimap, and start hunting Relics from scratch.
