Quick Summary

EA Sports FC 27's tactical engine runs on FC IQ — the system of Player Roles, Focuses and Team Tactics that decides how your players move and defend without your input. Here's how all 37 Player Roles and 71 Role-and-Focus combinations work, and how to build a tactic that actually holds up.

EA Sports FC 27's tactical engine runs on a system called FC IQ — the combination of Player Roles, Focuses and Team Tactics that decides how every player on the pitch moves, presses and supports when you aren't directly controlling them. It sounds like a menu screen you can ignore, but it isn't: FC IQ is the difference between a back four that actually holds its shape under pressure and one that gets split open every time an opponent plays a through ball. Here's how the system works in FC 27, what each setting actually changes, and how to set up a tactic that fits the way you want to play.

1. What FC IQ Actually Controls

FC IQ governs off-the-ball behavior: where a player stands, when they make a run, how far they press, and how they support a teammate in possession. It's separate from PlayStyles, which govern what a player can do with the ball — a Finesse Shot or a Jockey PlayStyle is about on-ball execution, while a Player Role is about positioning and decision-making when the ball is somewhere else on the pitch. The two systems work together: a striker with the Poacher role and the Rapid PlayStyle will make runs in behind and actually has the pace to get there, while the same role on a slower forward will look for the same spaces but arrive later.

In EA's own words from the FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive, the design goal this year was less automation and more player-led decision-making across every phase of play — and FC IQ is the layer that sets the baseline before you ever touch the controller.

2. Player Roles Explained

FC 27 ships with 37 Player Roles spread across every position on the pitch, from goalkeeper through striker. Every position other than goalkeeper has between three and five distinct roles to choose from, and combined with their Focuses (more on those below) there are 71 total Role-and-Focus combinations available in the game. A Role sets a player's primary job: a center-back can be told to simply defend the box, step out and challenge attackers early as a Stopper, or push into midfield with the ball as a Ball-Playing Defender. A central midfielder can shield the back line as a Holding player, roam and create as a Playmaker, or split the difference as a Box-to-Box runner who covers the full length of the pitch.

A handful of examples of how the same position changes under different roles:

  • Goalkeeper — three roles: a traditional Goalkeeper who stays on the line, a Sweeper Keeper who steps out to support defenders, and a Ball-Playing Keeper built around starting attacks with the ball at their feet.
  • Center-Back — Defender (stays central and conservative), Stopper (steps out to meet attackers), Ball-Playing Defender (drives forward with possession), and Wide Back for back-three systems that need flank coverage.
  • Central Midfield — Holding, Box-to-Box, Playmaker, Deep-Lying Playmaker and Half-Winger roles that each change how much a player tracks back versus pushes forward.
  • Striker — Advanced Forward, Poacher, False 9 (drops deep to link play) and Target Forward (holds the ball up and brings others into the attack).

FC 27 also added new roles that weren't available in last year's game, including Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, Box Crasher and Ball-Playing Keeper — giving back-three and possession-based systems more specific tools than before.

3. Focuses: Fine-Tuning Each Role

A Role sets the broad job; a Focus is a modifier layered on top that adjusts one or two specific behaviors without changing the role entirely. Most roles carry two or three Focus options, and the common ones include:

  • Defend — prioritizes staying compact and conservative positioning over pushing forward.
  • Balanced — a middle setting between defensive caution and attacking risk.
  • Attack — leans the player further forward and more willing to make runs.
  • Build-Up — prioritizes supporting possession and progressing the ball through midfield.
  • Roaming / Versatile — gives the player more freedom to drift from their starting position based on where space opens up.

Picking the wrong Focus is a common reason a tactic feels broken even when the Role looks right on paper — a Deep-Lying Playmaker with a Defend focus will barely join the attack, while the same role with a Build-Up focus will actively look to receive the ball and dictate play from deep.

4. Role Familiarity: Base, Role+ and Role++

Not every player performs a Role equally well. FC 27 tracks individual Role Familiarity for each player:

  • Base — the player can perform the role, but at a default level of positioning, movement and decision-making.
  • Role+ — the player is accomplished in that role, with noticeably sharper positioning and decisions.
  • Role++ — the highest familiarity tier, reserved for a player's strongest roles, where they perform at their most effective.
  • Out of Position — flagged with a yellow warning icon, this applies a simplified, reduced-effectiveness version of the role.

This is why copying a pro's exact tactic code doesn't always translate — the formation and roles might be identical, but if your squad's players don't carry Role+ or Role++ familiarity in those specific roles, the same setup will underperform. It's worth checking each player's role familiarity list before building a tactic around them rather than assuming every card can do everything.

5. Team Tactics and Phases of Play

Above individual Player Roles sits Team Tactics, which sets instructions for the whole side rather than one player at a time. This covers things like your defensive line height, how aggressively the team presses when out of possession, and the general build-up style — direct passing out of the back versus patient possession through midfield. The strongest tactical setups treat this as a readable game plan rather than a single aggressive or passive setting: deciding where you want to win the ball back, how you want to play out from there, and which areas of the pitch you want to attack first, then choosing Roles and Focuses that actually support that plan rather than fighting against it.

A common mistake is stacking every slot with Attack-focused roles to chase more pressure up front — it usually backfires, because nobody is left to cover the space in behind once possession is lost. A settled approach — a Balanced defensive line, Roles that match what your specific players are good at, and Focuses chosen to support a clear plan instead of maximum aggression everywhere — tends to hold up better over a full match than an all-out setup that wins big spells and concedes just as big.

6. How This Connects to FC 27's Defending Changes

FC 27's Gameplay Deep Dive confirmed a significant shift to defending: AI-controlled teammates no longer automatically attempt tackles just because an attacker gets close. Instead, AI defenders rely more on positioning — holding their ground and blocking passing lanes — until the player manually commits to a tackle or duel. That change makes Player Roles more important than it was in previous years, because the Role and Focus assigned to each defender now has a bigger say in where they stand and how quickly they close down space, rather than the AI bailing out a poor defensive setup with an automatic challenge. The same deep dive also confirmed a rebalance of several PlayStyles — including Intercept, Jockey and Rapid — all of which interact directly with how well a given Role performs under FC 27's new manual-defending-first approach.

7. Setting Up Your Own Tactics

To edit Player Roles and Team Tactics, head to your club's Squad menu and open Squad Actions, then Tactics, then Edit Tactic. From there the Player Roles tab lets you assign a Role and Focus to every outfield position individually, while the Team Tactics section covers the whole-squad settings like defensive line and build-up style. A practical way to build a tactic from scratch:

  1. Pick a formation that fits the players you actually own, not the one you've seen online.
  2. Check each key player's Role Familiarity list and assign Roles they carry Role+ or Role++ in wherever possible.
  3. Set Focuses to match a single coherent plan — don't mix a Defend-focused back line with an all-Attack midfield and expect balance.
  4. Start Team Tactics on a Balanced setting and only push more aggressive once you've seen how the default setup holds up in a match or two.
  5. Adjust one thing at a time after each match rather than overhauling the whole tactic, so you can actually tell what changed.

8. Quick Tips Recap

  • Player Roles control positioning and off-the-ball decisions; PlayStyles control what a player can do with the ball — they work together, not as substitutes for each other.
  • FC 27 has 37 Player Roles and 71 total Role-and-Focus combinations, including new additions like Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, Box Crasher and Ball-Playing Keeper.
  • Check Role Familiarity (Base, Role+, Role++) before copying a tactic — the same setup performs differently depending on your actual squad.
  • FC 27's reduced AI auto-tackling means Player Roles and Focuses carry more weight in defending than in previous years.
  • Build Team Tactics around a single coherent game plan rather than maximum aggression in every slot.
