Phantom Blade Zero: Review Embargo, Editions and Launch Day Explained

Quick Summary

Phantom Blade Zero's review embargo lifted October 26, just as pre-load opens ahead of its October 28-29 launch on PS5 and PC. Here's what the early scores say, what each edition includes, PC system requirements and exactly when the game unlocks in your time zone.

Phantom Blade Zero launches on PlayStation 5 and PC on October 28-29, 2026, and the review embargo for the game lifted earlier today, October 26. That means the first wave of critic scores is now public just as pre-load windows open, which makes this the moment to sort out exactly when the game unlocks in your region, what each edition actually includes, and whether your PC can run it.

This guide skips the combat breakdown and weapon list — those are covered in our existing Phantom Blade Zero primer and our breakdown of its weapons and Phantom Edges — and focuses instead on the practical, launch-day questions: review scores, pricing, platforms, specs and timing.

1. When Does Phantom Blade Zero Actually Launch?

The confusion around the release date comes down to time zones, not conflicting information. Phantom Blade Zero's official global launch is set for 2:00 a.m. UTC on Thursday, October 29, 2026. Converted to North American time, that lands in the evening of October 28 — which is why Steam's own store listing shows the release date as "Oct 28, 2026" for US-based accounts, while PlayStation and European storefronts show October 29. Both are correct; they're just describing the same worldwide unlock moment from different local calendars.

The game was originally announced for a September 9, 2026 release before developer S-GAME pushed it back roughly 50 days to its current October date, citing extra polish time rather than any specific feature cut.

2. The Review Embargo Lifted Today — Here's What the Scores Say

Review embargoes for Phantom Blade Zero were expected to lift three days ahead of launch, and that held true: critic reviews went live on October 26. As of this writing, the game's official Steam store page — which pulls its score directly from Metacritic — lists an aggregate critic score of 88 for the PC version, putting Phantom Blade Zero in strong shape heading into launch.

That figure will keep moving as more outlets publish over the next few days, and it only reflects the PC version so far, so treat it as an early read rather than a final verdict. If you want to track it as it updates, Metacritic's own Phantom Blade Zero page is linked in the Official Resources section below.

3. Editions, Pricing and Pre-Order Bonuses

Phantom Blade Zero ships in two digital editions, with no physical release or Collector's Edition currently planned:

  • Standard Edition — $59.99. The base game on PS5, Steam or the Epic Games Store.
  • Digital Deluxe Edition — $69.99. Adds two exclusive character outfits, a digital artbook and the game's soundtrack. S-GAME has confirmed the two Deluxe outfits cannot be unlocked through normal in-game progression — they're exclusive to this edition.

Everyone who pre-orders either edition also receives the Legacy Outfit and the Treasure Basin accessory as bonuses, though S-GAME has said both of those items can also be earned later just by playing through the game, so skipping pre-order isn't a permanent loss.

4. Platforms: Why There's No Xbox or Switch Version

At launch, Phantom Blade Zero is confirmed only for PlayStation 5 and PC, with the PC version available through both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Neither S-GAME nor Sony has announced an Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch version, and there's been no official word on whether one is planned. Some unofficial reports have floated a timed PS5 console exclusivity window, but neither S-GAME nor Sony has confirmed that detail, so treat it as unverified for now.

5. PC System Requirements

Phantom Blade Zero runs on Unreal Engine 5, and S-GAME's Steam listing sets a relatively approachable bar for the minimum spec, though an SSD is mandatory either way:

Minimum (1080p / 30 FPS with upscaling)

  • OS: Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Memory: 16GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 (6GB) or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (8GB)
  • Storage: SSD required

Recommended (1440p / 60 FPS with upscaling)

  • OS: Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-10600K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
  • Memory: 16GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (8GB) or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT (12GB)
  • Storage: SSD required

Note that both tiers assume upscaling (DLSS, FSR or similar) is switched on to hit their listed frame rates — native-resolution performance will run lower than these targets on the same hardware.

6. Preloading and Launch Times by Region

Preloading opens roughly 48 hours before the global unlock, so PC and PS5 players who want to be ready at midnight should expect the download to appear in their library around October 27. Because the worldwide launch is timed to 2:00 a.m. UTC on October 29, here's roughly when that translates locally:

  • US Pacific: evening of October 28
  • US Eastern: late evening of October 28
  • UK: early morning of October 29
  • Central Europe: just after 3:00 a.m. on October 29
  • Beijing / Japan: mid-morning of October 29

As with any simultaneous worldwide launch, double-check the countdown timer on your own storefront listing closer to the date — platform holders occasionally stagger unlocks by an hour or two even within a single region.

7. What You're Actually Launching Into

For anyone coming in cold: Phantom Blade Zero casts you as Soul, a warrior betrayed and left for dead by his own people, then revived by a mysterious figure known as the Flesh Sculptor — with only sixty-six in-game days left to live. The search for a cure takes Soul across eight connected regions rendered in a hand-painted, Chinese ink-art style, in a setting S-GAME describes as "kungfupunk": traditional wuxia martial arts colliding with steampunk machinery and body modification.

S-GAME has been explicit that it's not building a Soulslike in the Dark Souls sense — the studio describes the combat as easy to pick up but deep to master, built around fast, fluid combos rather than slow, punishing exchanges, with four selectable difficulty levels so players can tune that challenge themselves. Martial artist Donnie Yen consulted on the fighting style and also voices a key character, Mó Yuan.

It's also worth sizing this launch up against the rest of an unusually stacked October: Phantom Blade Zero arrives in the same month as the Xbox-side action shooter covered in our Gears of War: E-Day breakdown, and its review-embargo timing follows the same pattern we tracked for Ace Combat 8's launch-day review scores — both useful comparison points if you're deciding where to spend launch week.

Quick Tips Recap

  • Global launch is 2:00 a.m. UTC on October 29 — "October 28" on US storefronts and "October 29" everywhere else describe the same moment.
  • Review embargo lifted October 26; Steam's Metacritic-sourced score sits at 88 as of publication and may shift as more reviews land.
  • Standard Edition is $59.99; Digital Deluxe is $69.99 and includes two outfits, an artbook and the soundtrack that aren't earnable in-game.
  • Pre-order bonuses (Legacy Outfit, Treasure Basin) are also earnable later through normal play.
  • Confirmed platforms are PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store only — no Xbox or Switch version has been announced.
  • An SSD is mandatory on PC even at minimum settings; 16GB of RAM is required for both the minimum and recommended specs.
  • Preloading opens around 48 hours before launch, so expect it in your library by October 27.
