Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2: Release Date, Price and Vibrant Visuals Explained
Minecraft's native Nintendo Switch 2 version launches October 27, 2026, with confirmed pricing for the Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions, a free upgrade path for existing Switch owners, and Vibrant Visuals turned on by default.
Minecraft is finally getting a true native version on Nintendo's newest console. Mojang Studios has confirmed that Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 27, 2026, bringing the game's biggest graphics overhaul, Vibrant Visuals, to the hybrid console by default. Here is exactly what launches, what it costs, and how existing Switch owners can upgrade.
Until now, Minecraft on Switch 2 has only run through backward compatibility with the original Switch version, using the same Bedrock build released back in 2017. This release replaces that with the first version built and optimized specifically for Switch 2's hardware, rather than an older port running through compatibility mode.
1. Release Date and What's Launching
Mojang set the native Switch 2 version's launch for October 27, 2026, confirming the date on the official pre-order announcement at Minecraft.net. Three digital versions are available to pre-order ahead of launch: Standard Edition, Deluxe Collection, and Ultimate Collection. A physical retail version is also available at launch for players who prefer a cartridge.
2. Pricing: Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate
Nintendo's own eShop listings confirm pricing for all three digital editions in the US:
- Standard Edition — $29.99
- Deluxe Collection — $39.99
- Ultimate Collection — $49.99
All three editions include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with Vibrant Visuals support. The two higher tiers add extra content on top, detailed below. Players who prefer a disc can instead pre-order the physical Nintendo Switch 2 version at retail, which ships as a Game-Key Card.
3. What Deluxe and Ultimate Add On Top
The Deluxe and Ultimate Collections aren't just the base game with a different label — each bundles extra add-ons, cosmetic items and in-game currency:
- Deluxe Collection includes three add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O'Blocks), three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- Ultimate Collection includes five add-ons (adding Decocraft and Weapons & Tools on top of the Deluxe set), five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1,000 Minecoins.
Mojang notes that any Minecoins included with, or purchased inside, the Nintendo version must be spent within the Nintendo ecosystem — they don't carry over to Minecoins balances on other platforms.
4. The Free Digital Upgrade Path for Existing Owners
If you already own Minecraft digitally on the original Nintendo Switch, Mojang is offering a limited-time upgrade path. According to Nintendo's official product page, players who launch their existing Minecraft on a Nintendo Switch 2 console between October 27, 2026 at 9 AM PT and January 31, 2027 at 9 AM PT will get an in-game prompt offering a free upgrade to the digital Standard Edition, or a discounted upgrade to the Ultimate Collection.
The free Standard Edition upgrade applies in most territories. The exceptions are Japan (100 JPY), Taiwan (30 NTD) and Thailand (25 THB), where a small fee applies instead of a fully free upgrade. The offer is only redeemable through the Nintendo eShop, and existing worlds carry over to the new version. Mojang has not announced an upgrade path for players who own Minecraft only on a physical Switch cartridge.
5. Vibrant Visuals, Explained
The headline feature of the Switch 2 version is Vibrant Visuals, which Mojang calls the biggest graphics update in Minecraft's history. It adds directional lighting that shifts with the time of day, volumetric fog, improved shadows, and light that realistically reflects off water and wet surfaces. On Switch 2, Vibrant Visuals is switched on by default rather than needing to be enabled manually.
The upgrade isn't universal, though. Mojang's own disclaimers confirm Vibrant Visuals is not available during split-screen play, and it doesn't apply to certain Marketplace Worlds and content that weren't built to support it.
The lighting changes show up everywhere, from sunlit farms and desert mesas to underwater coral reefs, where volumetric fog and light shafts now filter down through the water. Deep underground, the same engine changes affect lush caves and the deep dark biome, where glowing berries, sculk sensors and ambient light behave very differently from the flatter lighting of the original Switch release.
6. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Gets an Update
Every edition of Minecraft for Switch 2 includes the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, and Mojang is updating it to take advantage of Vibrant Visuals. The pack retextures the world with a Mushroom Kingdom theme, complete with Mario-inspired music, character skins, and recognizable locations like Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza rebuilt out of blocks. It has long been one of the few pieces of official Mario crossover content available outside Nintendo's own franchises, and it's exclusive to Minecraft's Nintendo versions.
7. Multiplayer and Online Play
Multiplayer on the Switch 2 version works the same way it does on other consoles: playing online with friends requires a separate, platform-specific online subscription on top of owning the game itself. Local split-screen and Realms remain available, though as noted above, Vibrant Visuals is disabled specifically during split-screen sessions, so local co-op will look closer to the original Switch version's lighting even after upgrading.
8. How This Fits Into Minecraft's Bigger 2026
The Switch 2 launch arrives in the middle of an unusually busy year for Minecraft. Mojang used Minecraft Live 2026 to unveil The Sift dimension alongside new ice cave content, while the Wilderness Bound update has already been rolling out new biomes and blocks on other platforms. Spin-off title Minecraft Dungeons II is also heading to Switch 2 as part of the same console push, giving the platform two major Minecraft releases in short succession.
For anyone planning to play together after upgrading, it's worth brushing up on how Realms invite codes work before launch day, since worlds and server setups carry over from the original Switch version.
9. Should You Upgrade or Wait?
If you already own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch, there's little reason not to claim the free Standard Edition upgrade before the January 31, 2027 deadline — it costs nothing in most territories and keeps your existing worlds. Whether to pay extra for Deluxe or Ultimate comes down to whether the bundled add-ons, Character Creator items and Minecoins are worth it to you, since all three editions run the same core game with the same Vibrant Visuals support.
New players deciding between editions should weigh the Minecoins and add-on bundles against buying them individually later through the Marketplace, where prices can vary.
