Quick Summary

NBA 2K27's Update 2.0 patch notes are here: the October 8 release fixes "ghost contests," reworks steal animations and penalties, and finally lets MyCAREER Eras saves run a full 25-year career. Here's everything that changed on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, plus what's coming to Switch 2 and PC when Season 2 begins October 16.

NBA 2K27's first major gameplay patch is live. Update 2.0 arrived on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 8, 2026, with Nintendo Switch 2 and PC set to receive it on October 16 — the same day Season 2 kicks off. According to 2K's own patch notes, the update rewrites how shot contests, steals, dunks and MyCAREER Eras saves work, making it the most significant tuning pass since the game launched on September 4.

Here's exactly what changed, section by section, straight from 2K's official patch-notes page.

1. Shooting: "Ghost Contests" Are Finally Gone

The headline fix addresses the community's loudest complaint since launch. 2K's notes explain that shot contests previously registered even when a defender wasn't truly in position, punishing shooters for contests that shouldn't have counted. Update 2.0 changes the math:

  • Contests now factor in the defender's position at the moment of release and require them to be more squarely in front of the shooter.
  • Shot selection is rewarded more consistently — open looks from good shooters are more effective, mid-range got a competitive-mode boost, and overall three-point percentages were "slightly rebalanced."
  • Shot range detection for several shooting badges was improved, so badges activate more accurately.
  • The "Bad Shot Selection" event no longer incorrectly triggers on greened layups, dunks, or decent mid-range and three-point attempts.

2. Dunking, Rebounds and Takeovers

Dunking got several targeted fixes rather than a blanket buff. Missed dunks and alley-oops that should have connected on correct timing are now fixed, contact dunks succeed more often at every badge level of the Rise Up badge, and missed-shot rebounds were cleaned up — fewer multiple rim bounces, fewer near-out-of-bounds results, and a corrected leftward bounce bias. Dunk Timing players specifically should see fewer dunks missed with the setting turned off.

Takeover abilities were also retuned: Shot Artist, Calibrated and Navigator now have adjusted timing windows, Navigator and Airspace make on-ball defense matter more, Airspace and Detonator reduce dunk frequency and success against them, and Rim Guardian now directly counters Airspace. For a full breakdown of how the dunk meter, contests and Takeover abilities fit together, see our guide to the Dynamic Dunk Meter and Takeover system.

3. Defense, Steals and Passing

Steal spam was one of the other major complaints heading into October, and 2K addressed it directly: steal animations are now better matched to the defender's actual steal rating, and low-rated or out-of-adrenaline defenders are properly penalized on failed attempts. CPU defenders also play looser on-ball and off-ball defense at the start of a game, tightening up as a human player starts scoring — 2K says it will keep monitoring how that AI intensity behavior plays out.

Passing and catching also improved this patch: fewer missed catches and defender collisions, better pass responsiveness when a receiver is being bodied up, and slightly faster pass speeds. A bug that incorrectly called the inbounder out of bounds after an inbound pass was also fixed.

4. Dribbling Exploits and Free Throw Fixes

Several dribble exploits reported by the community are patched: Behind-the-Back Escape commands randomly turning into a standard behind-the-back move, a D-pad dribble-emote input that could cancel a sprint into an unnaturally fast stop, and a self-lob spam exploit that let players travel in the post during 1v1 play. Anklebreaker requirements were also tightened so only hard decelerations and quick launches qualify.

On the officiating side, 2K fixed multiple free throw and shooting-foul issues — incorrect free throw counts, putbacks misattributed to the wrong player, fouls called on defenders who weren't involved, and a rare state where the game could become unresponsive after a foul. Shooting fouls on blocked shots happen less often now, too. The update also touches the Shot Meter and HUD: it's no longer hidden behind the Team Communication Status icon, and it no longer flips sides mid-shot.

5. MyCAREER Eras Now Covers a Full 25-Year Career

The biggest MyCAREER change: Eras saves now transition properly across every era, meaning a MyPLAYER can finally run the complete 25-year career arc the mode was built around, instead of saves breaking or stalling partway through. 2K also made unspecified "additional improvements" to player movement, progression accuracy and Moments tracking inside Eras. If you haven't started an Eras save yet, our complete guide to MyCAREER Eras and the MyPLAYER Builder covers how the format is structured.

The "Fire & Concrete" story also received fixes, including a progression blocker that could occur after Chapter 3 and a trophy/achievement that wasn't unlocking correctly. Quests and Challenges across MyCAREER got a wide pass too — Rebirth, MyPOINTS Accelerator, Workout Warrior and GOAT Skills quests can resume progressing if userdata had previously been corrupted, and several Endorsement objectives were fixed to reward properly. MyCAREER Co-Op also got stability fixes, including a camera bug that switched guest players to the bench view whenever the host did.

6. The City, MyTEAM and MyNBA/The W

The City picked up broad stability and visual improvements, plus quality-of-life changes in Crew HQ: Crew Divisions matches now earn 25% more REP and 2X Crew XP, Shot Meters are now enabled in Crew Divisions and Event Center matches, and postgame menus/replays are viewable for Crew Divisions and Squad Showdown matches.

MyTEAM's changes are mostly quality-of-life: improved Auction House search performance, the ability to add unowned player cards straight to your Wishlist from search results, and several hang fixes in the Shoe Lab, Lineups and Triple Threat Park menus. WNBA-specific fixes landed too — Tempo and Fire team filters were added where they were missing, and WNBA team autofill now respects Gauntlet-selected players.

On the MyNBA/MyGM/The W side, the patch adds real-world presentation updates: a multi-championship commemorative banner for the Seattle Storm, a 2019 championship banner for the Washington Mystics, and a batch of uniform updates (Hawks, Warriors, Rockets, Lakers, Grizzlies and more) that 2K says will be "available following a roster update before Season 2 begins on October 16." 7. What's Next: Season 2 Arrives October 16

Update 2.0's rollout is explicitly timed around Season 2, which 2K's patch page confirms begins October 16, 2026 — the same day Switch 2 and PC players receive this update. 2K has said the patch released ahead of Season 2 "will contain a much broader set of fixes and improvements spanning the entire game," so expect a further update around the season launch rather than this being the final word on shooting and defense balance.

That means console players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S currently have roughly a week to adjust to the new contest and steal logic before Season 2 begins. PC and Switch 2 players, meanwhile, will jump straight from the launch build into both Update 2.0 and Season 2 on the same day.

Quick Recap

  • Update 2.0 is live now on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (October 8); Switch 2 and PC get it October 16.
  • "Ghost contests" are fixed — shot contests now require proper defender positioning at release.
  • Steal animations and penalties now scale with the defender's actual rating.
  • MyCAREER Eras saves can finally run the full 25-year career without breaking.
  • Season 2 begins October 16, 2026, alongside new uniforms and WNBA arena banners.
