Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2: Release Date, Price and Vibrant Visuals Explained
Minecraft's native Nintendo Switch 2 version launches October 27, 2026, with Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions starting at $29.99. Here's exactly what's confirmed: pricing, the free upgrade for existing Switch owners, Vibrant Visuals, and what carries over.
Minecraft is getting a native Nintendo Switch 2 version, and Mojang has now confirmed exactly when it arrives, what it costs, and who gets it for free. The short version: Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches October 27, 2026, pre-orders are already open, and owners of the current Nintendo Switch version have a limited-time path to upgrade at no cost. Here is everything officially confirmed so far, with nothing guessed or filled in.
1. When Minecraft Launches on Nintendo Switch 2
Mojang opened pre-orders for the dedicated Switch 2 release on October 7, 2026, confirming a launch date of October 27, 2026. The release is sold both digitally through the Nintendo eShop and physically at retail as a Game-Key Card, Nintendo's format for cartridges that hold a download license rather than the full game data.
This is a separate, dedicated version built for Switch 2 hardware rather than an enhanced patch delivered to the existing Switch cartridge or download. That distinction matters for the pricing and upgrade terms below.
2. Editions and Pricing: Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate
Three digital versions are available for pre-order through the Nintendo eShop, alongside the physical release:
- Standard Edition – $29.99. The base game with full Switch 2 support.
- Deluxe Collection – $39.99. Adds three add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O'Blocks), three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- Ultimate Collection – $49.99. Adds five add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O'Blocks, Decocraft and Weapons + Tools), five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1,000 Minecoins.
Those prices are listed directly on Nintendo's official U.S. eShop product page. Any Minecoins bundled with a digital edition, or purchased afterward inside Minecraft on a Nintendo device, are tied to the Nintendo ecosystem and can't be moved to other platforms.
3. The Free Upgrade for Existing Switch Owners
If you already own a digital copy of Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch, Mojang is offering the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free. The offer runs until the end of January 2027 and is redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop. It's available in most territories, with three listed exceptions: in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand the upgrade isn't free, instead costing 100 JPY, 30 NTD and 25 THB respectively. Players who'd rather have more content can skip the free Standard upgrade and instead pre-order the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection at a discounted price during the same window.
Owners of a physical Switch cartridge aren't left out either, though their path is different: Nintendo's listing confirms that any player — digital or physical — who launches Minecraft for Nintendo Switch on a Switch 2 console between October 27, 2026 at 9 AM PT and January 31, 2027 at 9 AM PT will get an in-game prompt inviting them to upgrade to the digital Ultimate Collection at a discount. No separate free-upgrade path has been announced for physical-only owners beyond that discounted offer.
4. What Vibrant Visuals Actually Changes
Every version of Minecraft for Switch 2 ships with Vibrant Visuals turned on by default. It's Mojang's modern graphics pipeline, previously released on other platforms, and Nintendo's own listing describes the effect plainly: more vivid sunrises, reflective water, shaded forests, plus broader improvements to lighting and shadows.
It isn't available everywhere, though. Mojang's own disclaimer is specific: Vibrant Visuals doesn't work in split-screen play, and it's unsupported in certain Marketplace Worlds and other add-on content. If you mostly play split-screen with a sibling or friend on the couch, expect the classic lighting model during those sessions rather than the enhanced look.
5. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Returns, Upgraded
Every edition — Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate and physical — includes the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, the long-running Nintendo-exclusive content pack that reskins Minecraft with Mario-themed textures, music and characters. For Switch 2 it has been rebuilt to support Vibrant Visuals. Nintendo's official product listing specifies the pack includes 15 music tracks and 40 player skins inspired by the Super Mario series, layered over a custom Mario-themed world.
Because it ships standard across every edition rather than being locked to the pricier bundles, it's effectively the one piece of content every Switch 2 buyer gets regardless of which version they choose.
6. Worlds Carry Over, and How Multiplayer Works
If you've already sunk hours into a Minecraft world on the original Switch, that progress isn't stranded. Nintendo's listing confirms worlds from the Nintendo Switch version can be carried over to Switch 2, so existing saves pick up where they left off rather than starting fresh.
On the multiplayer side, Switch 2 supports the usual mix: split-screen couch co-op, cross-platform play with other Minecraft players (which requires a Microsoft account), access to community servers, and private Realms Plus servers for up to ten friends. Online multiplayer also requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately from the game itself.
7. Physical Release Details
The retail version ships as a Game-Key Card rather than a cartridge containing the full game — the card unlocks a download rather than storing Minecraft's data directly, which is now standard practice for larger Switch 2 titles. Beyond the discounted in-game upgrade prompt described above, Mojang hasn't announced additional exclusive perks tied specifically to the physical edition.
