Quick Summary

Genshin Impact's Genius Invokation TCG is a free, permanent card-dueling mode hiding in plain sight — here's how to unlock it, how decks and elemental dice work, and how a turn actually plays out. We also cover how the mode has grown since its 2022 launch, from the Archons joining as cards to its own international esports tournament.

Genshin Impact has had a built-in card game for years, but a lot of Travelers still skip right past it. Genius Invokation TCG is a free, permanent mode where you build a deck from three characters and thirty action cards, then duel NPCs, friends, or strangers using elemental dice instead of mana. It is slower-paced and much more tactical than it looks at first glance, and none of your Spiral Abyss gear or talent levels carry over — it is its own game, with its own progression, rewards and even its own physical card product.

Here is what the mode actually is, how to unlock it, how a turn works, and how it has grown since its December 2022 launch.

1. What Genius Invokation TCG Actually Is

Genius Invokation TCG is a 1v1, turn-based digital card game built directly into Genshin Impact. It was developed by miHoYo and published by HoYoverse, and it launched on December 7, 2022 as part of Version 3.3, "All Senses Clear, All Existence Void." HoYoverse first teased the mode months earlier, during the Version 3.1 "King Deshret and the Three Magi" livestream in September 2022.

The game uses Character Cards modeled on Genshin's own playable characters and enemies, plus Action Cards — Equipment, Support, Talent and Event cards — that you play to help them fight. Matches can be played solo against NPC challengers scattered around Teyvat, in co-op with friends, or competitively in ranked queues.

2. How to Unlock the Mode

Genius Invokation TCG is not available from the start of the game. According to HoYoverse's own Version 3.3 patch notes, you need to meet two conditions before you can play it:

  • Reach Adventure Rank 32 or higher
  • Complete the Archon Quest "Song of the Dragon and Freedom"

Once both are done, the mode opens up both in the open world and inside Mondstadt's Cat's Tail tavern, where you can find your first opponents.

3. Decks, Characters and Elemental Dice

A legal deck is built from exactly 3 Character Cards and 30 Action Cards. At the start of a match, each player draws 5 Action Cards and may mulligan any number of them once, then chooses which of their three characters starts as the active character.

Every round, both players roll 8 Elemental Dice. Each die can land on one of Genshin's seven elements (Pyro, Hydro, Anemo, Electro, Dendro, Cryo, Geo) or on an Omni face, which can substitute for any single element you need. Dice work as the game's currency: you spend them to use character skills or play action cards, and you can reroll your remaining dice once per round (more in certain situations).

4. Combat Actions vs. Fast Actions

Turn structure is where Genius Invokation TCG separates itself from most card games. Every move you make falls into one of two categories:

  • Combat Actions — using a character's Normal Attack, Elemental Skill or Elemental Burst, or switching your active character. These pass the turn to your opponent.
  • Fast Actions — playing most Action Cards, or "tuning" a die's element using a card from your hand. These do not end your turn, so you can chain several in a row before committing to a Combat Action.

Either player can choose to end their actions for the round at any time. Whoever ends first gains priority for resolving end-phase summons and effects, and also gets to act first in the next round. At the close of every round, both players draw 2 new cards.

5. Elemental Reactions on the Table

Genius Invokation TCG adapts Genshin's open-world elemental reaction system into card form, along with a simplified version of the Energy mechanic that fuels Elemental Bursts. Applying Hydro to a character already affected by Pyro, for example, still triggers Vaporize-style effects at the table, just tuned for a card game's pacing rather than real-time combat. If you already understand how reactions work in the open world, that knowledge carries over directly, and our breakdown of every elemental reaction and how they combo is a good primer before your first duel.

6. How a Match Ends

A game of Genius Invokation TCG ends in one of two ways: a player loses as soon as all 3 of their characters have been knocked out, or the match reaches the end of round 14 without a winner, which is recorded as a double loss for both sides. In practice, most matches against early NPC challengers resolve well before either of those points, but the round limit matters once you start facing harder opponents or ranked players who are deliberately stalling for value.

7. PvE Challengers, Co-Op and Ranked Play

Outside of story-relevant duels, you build up the mode mostly through its open-world PvE loop. Winning matches against challengers earns Player EXP and a currency called Lucky Coins. Player EXP raises your Player Level, which unlocks new challengers and functions; Lucky Coins can be spent on Genius Invokation cards, Match Invitation Letters and other mode-specific items. Beating certain registered challengers on the Player List also rewards you directly with new Character and Talent Cards, and a separate weekly PvE puzzle mode, The Forge Realm's Temper, is another source of Lucky Coins at adjustable difficulty.

For multiplayer, Co-op Matching lets you duel anyone in your current co-op session with no rank restrictions, while the ranked Arena of Champions queue runs a single deck through a streak that ends after 5 wins or 3 losses. Both online queues require reaching Player Level 4 first. HoYoverse also periodically runs Heated Battle Mode, a limited-time queue with a modified ruleset for a change of pace. 8. The Version 3.7 Expansion and Beyond

Genius Invokation TCG got its biggest content jump on May 24, 2023, with Version 3.7, "Duel! The Summoners' Summit!" That update added more than 60 new cards and, for the first time, let players field Archons as Character Cards: Venti, Zhongli, Raiden Shogun and Nahida all joined the roster. The patch's story event, the "King of Invokations Grand Prix," framed it as a Teyvat-wide tournament and rewarded Invokation Coupons that could be traded in for prizes, including a free copy of the 4-star bow Ibis Piercer.

The mode's lore has quietly grown alongside its mechanics, too. It was first referenced in Version 2.3's "Marvelous Merchandise" event under the working name "Sacred Call of Seven," before the Version 3.7 quest "Duel! The Summoners' Summit!" named its in-universe creators as Garvipidam and Gulab, two Akademiya researchers. HoYoverse also took the game well beyond Genshin itself: an official physical version of Genius Invokation TCG, published by ShiningSoul, launched in China on November 8, 2024 with an accessory kit, 8 preconstructed decks and booster boxes covering 18 character cards and 91 action cards. On the competitive side, HoYoverse runs "Astra Carnival: The Prince Cup," an official international tournament series first announced in May 2023 with regional and invitational rounds. None of this is required reading to enjoy the mode casually, but it explains why a "mini-game" has its own esports scene and trading-card aisle.

Critics have generally been kind to it: outlets have compared its pacing to Hearthstone and Gwent, and reviewers have praised its balance and readability as a surprisingly deep system to have bundled for free into an open-world RPG. If deck-building appeals to you but you'd rather optimize your actual overworld characters first, it's worth reading up on how the Wish system and pity actually work before you start chasing 5-star Character Cards, since rewards from TCG matches are earned through play rather than pulled from banners.

Quick Tips for New Duelists

  • You need Adventure Rank 32+ and the Archon Quest "Song of the Dragon and Freedom" completed before the mode even appears.
  • Decks are fixed at 3 Character Cards and 30 Action Cards — there's no deck size flexibility to plan around.
  • Fast Actions (most cards, die tuning) don't end your turn; Combat Actions (attacks, skills, swaps) do. Chain Fast Actions before committing.
  • Ending your actions first each round earns you priority and the first move next round — don't always hold out for "one more card."
  • A match is lost when all three of your characters are knocked out, or it hits round 14 with nobody eliminated (a double loss).
  • Co-op Matching and ranked Arena of Champions both need Player Level 4, which you raise by playing PvE matches for EXP and Lucky Coins first.
