Quick Summary

Gears of War: E-Day's Versus Ranked playlists and the first Weekly Challenges reset go live today, October 13, exactly a week after launch. Here's what opened today, what's left in Season 1 "Emergence," and what The Coalition has revealed about the 20th-anniversary Season 2, "Legacy."

Versus Ranked opens today, October 13, in Gears of War: E-Day, exactly one week after the game's October 6 launch. It arrives alongside the first weekly reset of Season 1 "Emergence" Challenges, and comes just one day after developer The Coalition detailed Season 2, "Legacy," its 20th-anniversary season. Here's exactly what's live today, what's still ahead in Season 1, and what's confirmed so far about Season 2.

This is a fast-moving post-launch week for Gears of War: E-Day, so if you only have a minute: Ranked is live now, Weekly Challenges have refreshed for everyone, and The Coalition has committed to a 20th-anniversary season landing after Season 1 wraps on December 1.

1. Versus Ranked Is Live Today

The Coalition held Ranked back from the October 6 early access and launch windows on purpose. In the studio's own words from its pre-launch roadmap post, "Versus Ranked will officially launch one week after launch on October 13, giving players crucial time to get up-to-speed" with the game's maps, modes and weapon sandbox before competitive play opens up. That one-week gap is now over, and Ranked playlists are live as of today.

The studio hasn't published a detailed breakdown of Ranked's tiers or placement-match structure alongside today's launch, so treat any specific rank-tier claims you see elsewhere as unconfirmed until The Coalition posts full Ranked documentation. What is confirmed is the timing, and that Ranked sits on top of the same Versus mode roster and map pool that's been live since October 6.

2. Weekly Challenges Reset for Everyone

Today also marks the first weekly refresh of Season 1's Challenges. Premium Edition owners who started their five days of early access on October 1 got their first batch of Weekly Challenges that day; everyone else received the same set at full launch on October 6. Per The Coalition, "weekly challenges will then refresh on October 13" — which is today, bringing the whole player base, Premium Edition owners and standard buyers alike, onto the same challenge rotation going forward.

3. Versus: Modes and Maps You're Ranking Up In

Versus launched on October 6 with four core modes — Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition and Crucible — spread across six maps. If you haven't tried all of them yet before diving into Ranked, it's worth doing a few Social matches first, since Social and Ranked share the same mode and map pool.

The Coalition's own Multiplayer Developer Overview video walks through the design intent behind each Versus mode and the early Horde Siege structure, straight from the studio.

4. Horde Siege: What You're Up Against

Horde Siege is E-Day's 12-player cooperative mode, built around four launch classes — Assault, Breacher, Marksman and Medic — each with its own starting loadout, combat bonus and a cooldown-based Tactical Gear ability. The Coalition has said more classes are planned for future seasonal updates, though none have been dated yet.

Difficulty is split into three playlists — Infantry, Commander and Allfather — scaled to suggested class levels, so there's a real on-ramp for squads that haven't maxed out their classes yet. For a full breakdown of each class's kit and how to build a squad around them, our Horde Siege classes and strategy guide covers loadouts and squad composition in more depth.

5. The Rest of Season 1 "Emergence," Through December 1

Season 1 runs eight weeks, from the October 1 Premium Edition early access start through December 1. It includes every launch map, mode and cosmetic, plus three two-week themed events still to come: Halloween, "20 Years of Gears," and Thanksgibbing. The Coalition has said each event carries its own Versus Event mode, a Horde Siege Event mission, and exclusive rewards, though exact dates for each event within the season haven't been published yet.

The Shop also rotates every Tuesday, and partnership cosmetics move into the permanent Barracks catalog, purchasable with in-game Coins and Iron, once their limited-time exclusivity window ends.

6. Season 2 "Legacy": The 20th-Anniversary Roadmap

The same roadmap post that confirmed today's Ranked and Weekly Challenges timing also laid out Season 2 for the first time. In The Coalition's words, "Season 2 is called Legacy and will be dedicated to our 20th Anniversary" — marking two decades since the original Gears of War.

Two rewards are confirmed so far for Season 2:

  • Dead Serious medal: the returning Dead Serious achievement challenge will award players an exclusive Medal.
  • Legendary Character skin: The Coalition says that completing Dead Serious will also unlock "for the first time ever in the franchise, a Legendary Character skin," debuting at the start of Season 2.

Separately, every player who owns Gears of War: E-Day will receive "a special birthday gift" on November 7, 2026 — the franchise's actual 20th anniversary date. The Coalition hasn't detailed what that gift is yet. Beyond Legacy, the studio has also named three further seasons on its roadmap — Season 3: Infiltration, Season 4: Pendulum and Season 5: Devotion — without release windows attached.

7. PC Settings and Known Issues Worth Knowing Before You Queue

A few platform notes from The Coalition are worth flagging if you're jumping into Ranked on PC today. Launch added an FOV slider, options to disable Chromatic Aberration and Film Grain, and PC-specific frame rate and multi frame generation settings. Advanced Shader Delivery — which precompiles shaders to cut down on traversal stutter — supports AMD hardware starting at launch, with NVIDIA support confirmed to follow later in October. PC offline play became available alongside the October 6 global launch, after not being present during early access.

On the known-issues side, The Coalition has flagged that playing for long stretches without reloading a checkpoint can cause memory-related issues on some systems; saving and reloading periodically is the current workaround until a fix lands. Also worth noting for achievement hunters: the Xbox achievement "The Lucky Ones Died on E-Day" was removed ahead of launch to make way for the platform's newer Mythic Achievements system.

8. Quick Tips Recap

  • Versus Ranked opened today, October 13 — one week after the October 6 launch, by design, to give everyone time with the sandbox first.
  • Weekly Challenges refreshed today for every player, syncing Premium Edition early-access owners and standard buyers onto the same rotation.
  • Versus Ranked uses the same four modes and six maps that have been live since launch — run a few Social matches first if you're still learning the map pool.
  • Horde Siege's four classes (Assault, Breacher, Marksman, Medic) scale across three difficulty playlists, with more classes promised in future seasons.
  • Season 1 "Emergence" runs through December 1 with three themed events still to come: Halloween, 20 Years of Gears, and Thanksgibbing.
  • Season 2 "Legacy" is the confirmed next season, built around the franchise's 20th anniversary on November 7, with a returning Dead Serious medal and the series' first-ever Legendary Character skin.
