Fortnite Sprites Explained: How Leveling, Mastery and Rewards Work
Fortnite's Chapter 7 Season 4: Override turned Sprites into a full progression system, with leveling, permanent Mastery, and weekly "New Sprite Day" drops. Here's how leveling, Mastery rewards, and special types like Bounty Hunter Sprites actually work.
Fortnite's Chapter 7 Season 4, subtitled Override, introduced a companion system that a lot of players still don't fully understand: Sprites. These small creatures ride on your back, level up mid-match, and can be permanently "Mastered" for account-wide rewards. Epic has also kept adding new ones every week, including a themed Sprite tied to the recent Persona 5 Royal collaboration.
This guide breaks down what Sprites actually do, how leveling and Mastery work, what the Bounty Hunter variants change, and how the weekly "New Sprite Day" drops keep expanding the roster.
1. What Sprites Are and Why They Matter
A Sprite is a small collectible companion that attaches to your back bling slot and grants one passive ability. Unlike a cosmetic backpack, a Sprite's ability actually does something in a match — healing you faster, boosting movement, revealing nearby loot, and so on, depending on which Sprite you're carrying. Abilities scale up as the Sprite gains levels during a match, so a fresh Sprite is much weaker than one you've fed experience all game.
Sprites are found in the world, dropped from eliminated players, pulled from containers, or unlocked through Cheat Codes and Battle Pass progression. You can carry more than one at a time, and swapping between them is part of the strategy — some Sprites are worth building around for an entire match, others are better used briefly and extracted.
2. Where Sprites Fit in Chapter 7 Season 4: Override
Sprites didn't start with Override — Epic introduced them back in Chapter 7 Season 3 — but Override leaned into the system hard, adding a dedicated Mastery track and folding new Sprites into nearly every crossover the season has run, from the Kingdom Hearts tie-in to the season's PAC-MAN collaboration. If you want the full rundown of what else changed this season — map edits, new weapons, the Battle Pass — that's covered separately in our Chapter 7 Season 4 Override breakdown.
3. Sprite Rarities: What Changes Between Tiers
Like most Fortnite collectibles, Sprites come in rarity tiers, and the tier generally tells you how strong the passive ability is at a given level rather than changing what the Sprite does entirely. As of the early-September patch, the base roster broke down as eight Rare Sprites, four Epic, two Legendary, and two Mythic. Higher rarities tend to hit stronger numbers sooner — a Mythic Sprite's level-one effect can be close to what a Rare Sprite only reaches at max level — which is part of why some players target specific Sprites instead of just using whatever they pick up first.
Themed and event Sprites, like the Morgana Sprite covered below, don't always fit neatly into that same rarity ladder; Epic has used them as one-off, stronger variants tied to a limited-time collaboration rather than a permanent part of the base set.
4. How to Level Up a Sprite
Most Sprites gain experience from ordinary match actions:
- Opening containers (chests, ammo boxes, supply drops)
- Using Cheat Codes
- Getting eliminations
- Extracting a different Sprite you're carrying, which feeds its accumulated XP into the one you keep
There's an important exception: Klombo Sprites don't level from containers or eliminations at all — they only gain XP from consuming items, so players farming them tend to intentionally take damage and then heal repeatedly to rack up consumable use. It's a good example of why it's worth checking a Sprite's specific description before assuming it levels like the others.
5. Mastering a Sprite: What Actually Happens at Level 5
Getting a Sprite to level 5 and then extracting it "Masters" that Sprite. Mastery is an account-wide, permanent unlock — it isn't lost when the match ends, and it doesn't need to be repeated. Each Sprite you Master advances a separate Mastery Track by one node, unlocking whatever reward sits at that step.
Since the September 3 update, Mastering a Sprite also has a direct gameplay benefit the next time you find that same Sprite: resummon costs are halved, and any duplicate copies you pick up immediately feed XP into a Sprite you already own instead of sitting there as clutter. That change alone made repeated Sprite runs meaningfully more efficient.
6. The Mastery Track: What You Get for Mastering Sprites
The Mastery Track sits in the Override tab and currently runs 14 nodes deep. Progress carries over between matches, and each node you clear pays out account-wide — expect a mix of Battle Pass-style XP boosts and Gizmos (the season's crafting/customization currency) rather than new cosmetics. It's a slower grind than simply leveling a single Sprite in one match, since it requires repeatedly Mastering different Sprites over time, but it's the main long-term reason to engage with the system beyond just using a Sprite's ability in the moment.
7. Bounty Hunter Sprites and Other Special Types
Not every Sprite plays by the same rules. Bounty Hunter Sprites, added in the September update, only gain levels from eliminations — containers and consumables do nothing for them, which pushes players who want to level one toward more aggressive play instead of passively looting.
Themed Sprites tied to crossovers work differently again. The Morgana Sprite, released alongside the Persona 5 Royal collaboration, boosts healing effectiveness on a flat percentage scale per level — 15% at level one, climbing to 30%, 50%, 75%, and finally 100% at max level. It's a useful illustration of how wildly a Sprite's numbers can vary: a themed, limited-time Sprite can be considerably stronger than a common drop, which is part of why Epic keeps tying new ones to seasonal events instead of just adding more of the same.
8. New Sprite Day: How Epic Keeps the Roster Growing
Throughout the season, Thursdays have unofficially become "New Sprite Day" — the point in Epic's weekly update cycle when fresh Sprites go live. The rollout isn't always immediate, though: the September 17 update added 42 new Sprites into the game's files in one go, but only 13 of them were actually available to find that week. The rest — the Bounty Hunter variants along with a Birthday Sprite tied to the game's 9th anniversary celebration — didn't go live until the following week's update.
That staggered pattern is worth knowing if you're trying to plan around a specific Sprite: datamined content appearing in patch files is not a guarantee it's unlockable yet, and Epic has repeatedly held pieces back for a following week's reveal.
9. Quick Tips for Getting the Most Out of Sprites
- Check a Sprite's own description before farming XP for it — most level from containers, eliminations, and Cheat Codes, but exceptions like Klombo Sprites only respond to consumables.
- Get a Sprite to level 5 and extract it, don't just carry it passively, if you want Mastery Track progress.
- Once a Sprite is Mastered, keep grabbing copies of it — the reduced resummon cost and automatic XP transfer make it far cheaper to use again.
- If you want to level a Bounty Hunter Sprite specifically, prioritize eliminations over looting; container XP won't work on it.
- Don't assume everything visible in patch files is live — some Sprites revealed in a given update aren't unlockable until a later one.
