Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 has been live since August 20, 2026, and it is one of the biggest crossover seasons the battle royale has ever run. Called Override, the season swaps the usual mystical or sci-fi framing for a straightforward celebration of gaming history, dropping Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot and dozens of other guest characters onto the Island alongside a brand-new hacking mechanic. Here is what actually changed, what the Battle Pass includes, and how the season's core system works.

1. What Is Fortnite Override?

Override is the fourth season of Fortnite Chapter 7, launched with the v42.00 update on August 20, 2026. The story picks up right after Chapter 7 Season 3, where the season's antagonist, Geno, hacked the Island's stabilizer during the "Unstable" story event on August 15 and stole the Zero Point, leaving behind a single damaged game cartridge. Override casts players as the ones fighting to take back control of Geno's hijacked system, and Epic leaned into that premise with a "video games about video games" theme: nearly every major crossover added this season is a nod to a classic console or arcade franchise.

2. The New Match Override System, Explained

The season's headline mechanic is Match Overrides. Large game cartridges spawn in every match, and the first squad to reach one of the Override Consoles scattered around the map gets to activate it, rewriting a rule that applies to every player left in that match. Whoever triggers an Override has their name displayed at the base of the console, so the rest of the lobby knows exactly who changed the rules on them.

Alongside that, Override reworks how loot and Sprites interact:

• Cheat Codes are hidden across the Island. Finding one and entering it at an Override Console frees a Sprite ally to add to your collection.
• Loot Hacks let you spend Sprite Dust to customize what drops from chests in your current match, building on the Sprite Garden system introduced last season.
• Lobby Hacks are real-world redeemable codes, separate from in-match Cheat Codes, that Epic is distributing through social media, promotions and real-world campaigns throughout the season. Entering a valid one in the pre-game lobby menu grants a one-time account reward.

Your Sprites from Season 3 carried over into Override and still live in the Sprite Garden mode, so returning players don't lose that collection when the new season's hacking systems came online.

3. Map Changes: The Spire, Green Hill Zone and More

The Island itself was rebuilt around a new central landmark. Here's what changed:

• The Spire — a new central tower and the focal point of the season's story, replacing the terrain around the middle of the map.
• Green Hill Zone — the season's biggest crossover location, recreating Sonic's most famous stage with loops, rings, dash pads and the series' iconic checkerboard hills. It's built specifically for fast movement and racing across the terrain.
• Geno's HQ — headquarters for the season's antagonist.
• Temple — a new ancient-styled location that also ties into the Mega Man content added this season.
• Pac-Man Island — a standalone island reskinned in the arcade classic's ghost-and-maze aesthetic.

Calamari Canyon, Frosted Flats and Sinister Strip were removed to make room for the new locations, while the rest of the Island's layout stayed largely intact.

4. New Weapons and Mythic Items

The loot pool picked up several crossover-themed additions alongside the season's regular weapon refresh:

• Spin Dash (Mythic) — Sonic's signature move, usable for rapid movement including wall-running and looping through Green Hill Zone.
• Mega Buster (Mythic) — Mega Man's charge-shot arm cannon, added as a ranged Mythic weapon.
• Tetrimino Junk Rift — a gadget that drops giant Tetris blocks onto a target area.
• 8-Bit Shotgun — a pixel-art close-range shotgun themed around retro arcade visuals.
• Masamune AR and Shingen SMG — a pair of new futuristic weapons introduced together in the season's launch trailer.

5. The Chapter 7 Season 4 Battle Pass

The Override Battle Pass costs 800 V-Bucks and is headlined by Sonic the Hedgehog, who comes bundled with the Tails Sidekick, a Super Sonic transformation emote and themed cosmetics. It includes eight Outfits in total: Sonic, Geno, Wrixel, Grace Crowne, Phantom, Mali, K1TTYW1NS and Bastian. Two of those — Sonic and a customizable Tetris-styled outfit — are licensed crossover characters, while the remaining originals are each built around a different classic video game genre, from stealth to arcade.

Players who bought the Battle Pass or held a Fortnite Crew subscription during Override's launch week (August 20–27) also unlocked a bonus style for Grace Crowne — "Infiltrator" Grace Crowne — along with a matching glider, pickaxe and back bling.

6. Gaming Legends in the Item Shop

Most of Override's crossover characters skip the Battle Pass entirely and rotate through the Item Shop over the course of the season instead. Confirmed or already seen in-game include Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, Mega Man, Joker and Morgana from Persona 5, Pac-Man, Ryu and other Street Fighter characters, Scorpion and Raiden from Mortal Kombat, Lara Croft, and Geralt of Rivia. Since launch, Epic has kept adding to Override roughly every two weeks — the v42.10 update brought new Sprites and loot pool changes on September 3, and v42.20 delivered the Kingdom Hearts collaboration on September 17.
