Quick Summary

EA Sports FC 27 rebuilt defending, passing and off-ball movement around manual input instead of automated assistance. Here's every verified change from EA's official Gameplay Deep Dive pitch notes, including Triggered Curved Runs, off-balance dribbling and reduced AI auto-tackling.

EA Sports FC 27 launched worldwide on September 25, 2026, and the biggest change in how the game actually plays has nothing to do with new modes, cover stars or Ultimate Team cards. It's how the ball moves between players. Across defending, passing, dribbling and off-ball movement, EA rebuilt the core systems around manual input instead of automated assistance, laying it all out in an official "Pitch Notes: Gameplay Deep Dive." Here's exactly what changed, grounded entirely in EA's own notes, and what it means for how a match actually feels to play.

1. Why EA rebuilt the core gameplay around manual input

EA's stated goal for FC 27 was to shift the game's defensive and attacking "meta" away from automated interventions and toward player-controlled actions. In practice, that means dialing back the help the game used to give both AI-controlled defenders and attackers, and rewarding players who manually switch players, time their tackles, aim their passes and trigger their own off-ball runs. EA describes it as retuning "nearly every core mechanic from FC 26... to reward manual inputs." The result touches almost every phase of play, so it's worth understanding section by section.

2. Manual defending: faster jockeying, longer tackle range

The headline defensive change is how much more capable a manually controlled defender now feels compared to FC 26. According to EA, "manually-controlled defenders have increased jockey speed compared to FC 26," and the range of manually-triggered stand tackles has also been increased. In practical terms, if you take control of a defender and jockey the ball carrier yourself, you'll close down space faster and have a longer effective reach when you commit to a tackle than an AI-controlled teammate would in the same spot.

EA's own side-by-side pitch notes comparison shows this directly: a defender jockeying the dribbler in FC 27 stays tighter to the ball carrier than the same matchup in FC 26, where the gap opens up more easily. The design intent is simple — reward players who actively read the dribbler, switch to the correct defender, and position themselves well, rather than letting the CPU bail them out.

3. AI defending steps back: fewer auto-tackles, less contain assistance

The flip side of stronger manual defending is a deliberately weaker AI defense. EA's pitch notes state that defenders now "rely more on their positioning and support the play until you take control and choose when to make a tackle." Auto-tackles have been scaled back in competitive play, meaning an AI-controlled defender who isn't under your direct control will generally only win the ball from a loose pass or a direct collision, rather than stepping in and stripping it away on its own.

EA also reduced what it calls "contain assistance" — the automatic positioning help teammates used to get when closing down an attacker. Per the pitch notes, AI teammates now mark attackers "from a slightly longer distance than before," which means pressing effectively requires you to manually switch to the right defender rather than trusting the CPU to shadow the ball carrier on its own.

4. Passing: through balls and dinked passes go fully manual

Passing received the same manual-first treatment. EA's notes say through passes now "strictly follow your directional input" rather than being steered with heavy assistance toward the nearest open passing lane — if you aim it badly, it won't quietly correct itself into a good ball. The same applies to dinked passes, both along the ground and through the air, which EA describes as now "fully manual," relying entirely on your precision with aiming and power.

EA frames this as deliberately raising the skill ceiling: a well-timed through ball or disguised dink now says more about your own input than the game's assistance settings, and defenders reading the pass have a genuine chance to step in front of it if your aim or timing is off.

5. Attacking runs: new triggers for off-ball movement

Off-ball attacking movement got two brand-new manual mechanics in FC 27. The first is a Triggered Curved Run, activated with L1 + R1 on PlayStation or LB + RB on Xbox, which lets an off-ball attacker curve their run into open space around a defender instead of sprinting in a straight line. The second is a Pass & Follow Run (L1 + R1 + X, or LB + RB + A), which lets the player who just passed the ball immediately follow up with a curved run of their own — useful for one-twos, overlaps or cutting inside after releasing the ball.

Both runs are intentionally limited: per EA's notes, a manually triggered run only continues for "a limited distance" before stopping, so timing when you trigger it matters as much as the direction you send it in. On top of the manual triggers, EA also reworked how the AI itself makes off-ball runs, saying attackers now use "smarter, more contextual curved runs that better support each attacking move," factoring in available space, defensive shape and the offside line rather than following a predictable script.

6. Dribbling under pressure: staying on the ball when knocked off-balance

FC 27 also introduces off-balance dribbling, a system that lets top dribblers "ride challenges and maintain control under pressure" even after being knocked off-balance by a defender, rather than immediately losing the ball or stumbling into a loose touch. EA ties the strength of this recovery directly to a player's Balance, Agility and Dribbling attributes, so it's most noticeable with elite dribblers rather than every player on the pitch. The feature is limited to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 — it isn't present on the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

7. Corner kicks, crossing and headers were also rebalanced

Set pieces picked up several changes in the same spirit. Before a corner is delivered, you now get a brief window to manually move your attacking players, switch who you're controlling, make a run, shield an opponent, or use a new Avoidance move (hold R1 on PlayStation or hold RB on Xbox) to evade a marker in a crowded box. EA also removed the automatic positioning attacking players used to get in the penalty area, so getting bodies into good spots for a corner is now something you have to do yourself rather than something the game arranges for you.

Open-play crossing changed too: EA says crosses are "delivered into space more often rather than directly onto a specific player," so aim and power matter more than before, and a poorly placed cross is more likely to simply miss everyone. Heading accuracy was also retuned — EA's notes describe headers as "more accurate than in FC 26" when you connect cleanly, but connecting cleanly in the first place now "requires greater precision," making scruffy headers less common than in the previous game.

8. PlayStyle tuning changes worth knowing

Alongside the broader systems changes, EA adjusted several individual PlayStyles that affect how the mechanics above play out for specific players. Finesse Shot and Technical Dribbler both had the performance gap between their base and PlayStyle+ tiers narrowed, while Intercept now gives a bigger reach boost to non-PlayStyle players with a high Interceptions attribute. On the speed side, Rapid and Quick Step both had their speed boosts trimmed back, with Quick Step leaning more on a player's actual Acceleration attribute. Pinged Pass and Tiki Taka both lost bonuses that used to reduce trapping errors, Jockey now gives non-PlayStyle players more sprint acceleration while trimming the exit-speed boost, Precision Header had its accuracy gap narrowed, and Low Driven Shot lost its flat shot-speed boost entirely — its velocity is now based purely on a player's actual shooting attributes and how hard you hit the shot button. Readers who want the complete list of PlayStyles and how PlayStyle+ differs from the base version can find that covered in our full breakdown of all 36 PlayStyles and PlayStyle+.

9. How this fits into FC 27's launch window

These gameplay changes shipped as part of FC 27's core release on September 25, with EA continuing to patch the game since — most recently with Title Update 1.0.3, which focused on stability and Career Mode fixes rather than further gameplay tuning (you can find the details in our Title Update 1.0.3 patch notes). The defending and attacking changes above are separate from that patch — they're part of the base game's design, not a post-launch adjustment, so they apply whether you picked up FC 27 at launch or jumped in during Early Access. If you're also curious about the new social hub EA built alongside these gameplay changes, our guide to The Grounds, Clubs and Kickabouts covers how that open-world mode works.

Quick-tips recap

  • Manually controlled defenders jockey faster and tackle from further away than AI-controlled ones — take control before you commit to a challenge.
  • Don't expect AI teammates to auto-tackle or tightly contain attackers; switch players manually when pressing.
  • Aim through balls and dinked passes deliberately — both now follow your input exactly, with no steering assistance.
  • Use Triggered Curved Runs (L1+R1 / LB+RB) and Pass & Follow Runs (L1+R1+X / LB+RB+A) to create space off the ball; both only last a limited distance before you need to re-trigger them.
  • Off-balance dribbling favors players with high Balance, Agility and Dribbling, and only works on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2.
  • Take the extra pre-delivery window on corners to position runners and use Avoidance (hold R1 / RB) instead of relying on automatic positioning.
